Where to watch the 2023 Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are back on television for the first time since 2021. Last year, the ceremony did not air on TV due to criticism from prominent figures in entertainment over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s (HFPA) lack of diversity within its organization. After the HFPA reformed its policies and membership requirements, the Globes will return to television on a weekday instead of its usual Sunday night slot.

This year marks the 80th ceremony, and the stars will be out in full force. The Globes will honor the best in film and television in 2022. Additionally, Eddie Murphy will be the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Ryan Murphy will be the recipient of the Carol Burnett Award.

The 2023 Golden Globes will air at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, January 10. The ceremony will be held at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the ceremony. The star-studded list of presenters includes Tracy Morgan, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Billy Porter, Natasha Lyonne, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Quentin Tarantino.

Nominees

The Banshees of Inisherin leads all films with eight nominations, including acting nominations for Colin Farrell, Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan, and Brendan Gleeson. Behind Banshees is Everything Everywhere All at Once, with six nominations, while Babylon and The Fabelmans each received five.

Abbott Elementary is first-in-class for television as it leads the field with five nominations, including a coveted spot in the Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy category. Five shows received four nominations: The Crown, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Only Murders in the Building, Pam & Tommy, and The White Lotus.

What to expect from the departure

The Dragon, which arrived at the station in November last year as part of SpaceX’s 26th ISS resupply mission, originally carried 7,700 pounds of both supplies and scientific experiments. On the return leg of its journey, it will carry 4,400 pounds of completed scientific experiments, including the results of research into hydroponic and aeroponic methods for growing plants in space and into the use of microbes for potential medicines.

Included in the Dragon’s cargo will also be results from the Astrorad vest test, which is a radiation shielding vest that ISS crew members have been wearing to test for comfort and fit as they go about their daily tasks and sleep while on the station. Astrorad vests were also included in the recent uncrewed Artemis I mission around the moon, to test how effective they were at blocking the dangerous space radiation which future moon explorers can expect to be exposed to.

How to watch the departure

NASA will livestream the departure of the Dragon spacecraft on Monday, including coverage of the undocking from the space station. Coverage begins at 4:45 p.m. ET (1:45 p.m. PT) on Monday, January 9, with docking itself scheduled for 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT).

The Dragon will travel back to Earth through Monday evening and all of Tuesday, and is scheduled to splash down off the coast of Florida on Wednesday, January 11. NASA won’t be livestreaming the splashdown, but if you want to follow along with the spacecraft’s progress then you can head to the NASA Space Station blog which will have updates at every stage of the mission.

Perseverance rover celebrates its first Martian birthday

The Perseverance rover currently exploring Mars recently celebrated a milestone: its first Martian year since landing. Though the rover landed in the Jezero Crater in February 2021, making it almost two Earth years old, NASA measures its Mars missions in Martian years. As Mars orbits further from the sun than the Earth does, it has longer years, at 687 days, so the rover hit its first Martian birthday this week on January 6.

The end of Perseverance’s first Martian year also marks the end of its primary mission, as the rover was designed to operate for one Martian year minimum. But the rover is still healthy and going strong, so it immediately began its extended mission in which it will continue to explore the crater for evidence of ancient life and to collect samples of Martian rock and regolith.

The rover recently started creating a sample cache on Mars, where samples will be left for the future Mars Sample Return mission to collect and bring back to Earth. It will continue to work on this project as its new extended mission begins.

“We will still be working the sample depot deployment when our extended mission begins on January 7, so nothing changes from that perspective,” said Art Thompson, Perseverance’s project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, explained at the end of last year in a statement. “However, once the table is set at Three Forks, we’ll head to the top of the delta. The science team wants to take a good look around up there.”

The delta Thompson is referring to is the site of an ancient river delta, which is an exciting target for exploration because it could hold clues to whether microbial life ever existed on Mars. To get to the delta, the rover needs to travel up a steep embankment, and it should reach the top of the delta ready to start exploring sometime next month. It will then spend eight months exploring the area.

“The Delta Top Campaign is our opportunity to get a glimpse at the geological process beyond the walls of Jezero Crater,” said JPL’s Katie Stack Morgan, deputy project scientist for Perseverance. “Billions of years ago a raging river carried debris and boulders from miles beyond the walls of Jezero. We are going to explore these ancient river deposits and obtain samples from their long-traveled boulders and rocks.”

Hubble snaps a cluster in our galaxy bursting with stars

Within galaxies, stars aren’t evenly spaced out. Instead, stars tend to cluster into groups which can be as many as tens of thousands or even millions of stars strong. These groups of stars, called globular clusters, are tightly bound together by gravity and form a spherical shape with a dense core of stars in the center. They are also visually stunning, with thousands of points of light visible in different colors representing stars of all different ages.

The image of the week shared by scientists working with the Hubble Space Telescope this week shows one such globular cluster named NGC 6355. Located within our own galaxy, the Milky Way, this cluster is relatively nearby at less than 50,000 light-years distance from Earth in the constellation of Ophiuchus.

The image was captured using Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 instruments, which can see the enormous structure in great detail. It is difficult to study globular clusters using ground-based telescopes as water vapor in the Earth’s atmosphere distorts the readings, making it harder to resolve individual stars within the cluster. As Hubble is in space, orbiting around the Earth above its atmosphere, it sits above this water vapor and so is able to take more detailed images.

“The dense, bright core of NGC 6355 shines in crystal-clear detail as Hubble is able to resolve individual stars in the crowded area toward the center of this image,” Hubble scientists write. “Hubble’s unique capabilities and vantage point above Earth’s light-distorting atmosphere allow it to capture a globular cluster’s constituent stars in detail.”

How to Deep Clean Your Keyboard

One of the values my parents instilled in me at a young age was to take pride in my possessions. “You can’t have nice things until you learn to take care of them,” my mom used to tell me. The message stuck to the point where I’m semi-obsessed with keeping things in tip-top shape to extend their usable life as long as possible.

Case in point is my keyboard. I’ve been using a Das Keyboard 4 Pro exclusively since 2014 without incident. Build quality aside, I credit its longevity to regular maintenance cleanings. Once every few months or so, I’ll do a routine cleaning consisting of running the flat edge of a business card or a craft-style pipe cleaner between the rows of keys to pick up any stray hair before flipping the board upside down and beating the devil out of it to coax out any loose debris.

A few blasts with a can of compressed air will also do the trick, and I’ve even heard of folks using a shop vacuum to suck out stubborn particles.

The whole process takes less than five minutes and is certainly worth the time and effort but occasionally, you’ll want to go further and perform a thorough deep clean. For this, you’ll need a few more tools and a bit more time but again, it’s a worthwhile investment.

Paramount to a proper keyboard cleaning is a keycap puller tool. I picked up a kit that came with the tool and two cleaning brushes for $6.99 over on Amazon. It’s also a good idea to have a general purpose cleaner of some sort handy (isopropyl alcohol will also work) as well as a microfiber cleaning cloth.

With your computer off and the keyboard unplugged, it’s time to get to work. Use the keycap puller to pluck the keys from your board. It’s tedious as you have to go one by one, but it’s easy to do. Simply slide the wire hook ends over and under each key then lift up. So long as you use gentle force and don’t try to rush the process, there’s not much risk of damage. Rinse and repeat until all of the standard-sized keys have been removed.

Larger keys like the spacebar and backspace often utilize a different mount including a stabilizer bar. These can be extracted but because all of the other keys surrounding them have already been removed, I elected to leave them in place and simply clean around them.

I found a disgusting mix of hair, food crumbs, and other gunk hiding under the keys. I can only imagine how much worse it would have been if I had not been doing regular maintenance cleanings.

I used the brushes that came with the key puller kit to dislodge most of the mess but really, any brush should get the job done. An auto detailing brush or an unused makeup brush would be excellent alternatives.

How much time you spend on this step is really up to you. Those going for a like-new look may want to break out some tweezers to remove every single hair and embedded fiber, but I was more than content with a 95 percent improvement. Plus, you still have to tend to the individual keys.

This is where the all-purpose cleaner comes in. I again reached for the keycap puller brushes to get into the nooks and crannies on the underside of each key then gave the outer-facing surfaces a good wipe down with a cleaner-soaked microfiber before drying. Having a helper or two will greatly expedite this process as I easily spent a couple of hours just on this step alone.

With everything squeaky clean, all that’s left is to pop each key back into place, give the keyboard deck a good scrubbing and admire your handiwork.

January tech layoffs top December’s total in less than a week

The big picture: We are less than a week into the new year and the tech sector is already feeling the squeeze. According to Layoffs Tracker, a whopping 29,686 tech employees across 27 companies have been let go globally so far this month. For comparison, 17,074 tech workers lost their jobs in December 2022. Put another way, there have been nearly 74 percent more job cuts in the first several days of 2023 compared to all of last month.

Amazon, which is responsible for more than half of the cuts, confirmed earlier this week that it is parting ways with 18,000 employees after rapidly hiring over the last several years to meet needs during the pandemic. CEO Andy Jassy said multiple teams will be impacted, although the majority of role eliminations will be in Amazon Stores and PXT organizations.

San Francisco-based cloud software company Salesforce, meanwhile, is shedding 8,000 employees, or about 10 percent of its workforce.

Multiple crypto companies have also announced plans to let employees go. Genesis is saying goodbye to 30 percent of its workforce while Silvergate is parting ways with 40 percent of its staff. Crypto payments company Wyre went out of business completely. Ecommerce sites Everlane and Stitch Fix have trimmed 17 percent and 20 percent of their workforces, respectively, in recent days.

Layoffs Tracker data reveals that job cuts ramped up starting in May 2022 and have not really slowed down much since. November was a particularly rough month with more than 71,000 tech layoffs globally. Meta, Amazon, HP, Twitter and Cisco led the way with sizable scalebacks.

Amazon’s analysis of the situation likely holds true for many other major tech companies that went overboard with hiring during the pandemic to meet unprecedented demand for their services and / or products. Now that we have returned to a mostly normal way of life and the surge in online activity is subsiding, some businesses no longer need the extra help and are forced to cut staff.

Razer’s CES moonshot is a surround sound-enabled cushion for your gaming chair

Editor’s take: It wouldn’t be CES week without a wild concept from Razer. The company has once again delivered with Project Carol, but this year’s outside-the-box offering is far tamer than what we’ve seen in years past. Perhaps that means it’ll actually become a real product?

Project Carol is a gaming chair accessory – a head cushion, to be exact – featuring near-field surround sound speakers and high-fidelity haptics. Combined, Razer says it can help gamers experience new levels of immersion.

Razer said Project Carol works perfectly with any PC capable of 7.1 surround sound output and is compatible with all gaming chairs thanks to its adjustable straps. It connects wirelessly via 2.4GHz and can last up to eight hours on a single charge.

Razer argues that traditional surround sound speaker cabling can be messy, and installation requires additional space that some gamers might not have. What’s more, audio receivers or control boxes are often required to decode rear-channel signals, the company added.

Does Project Carol stand a chance at becoming a real product? It’s hard to say. The concept isn’t as “out there” as others we have seen in previous years. Remember Project Sophia, the all-in-one modular gaming desk, or Project Linda, which aimed to close the gap between laptops and smartphones?

Project Carol does have some obvious hurdles. Gaming headsets are quite popular and would not play well with a surround sound-enabled cushion. What’s more, the thought of having my head vibrate via haptics seems as if it would be a bit disorienting. Surely Razer would allow this feature to be disabled at will, but I can’t imagine a scenario where I’d actually want it on.

I suspect Razer will gauge feedback before deciding whether or not to move forward with production. Pricing could be key as I doubt few would want to pay more for a cushion than a traditional headset or even a chair.

AMD says insufficient fluid in Radeon RX 7900 XTX vapor chamber causing overheating, offers replacements

What just happened? The Radeon RX 7900 XTX saga over its high temperatures and unexpected throttling has come to a conclusion after AMD finally admitted the precise nature of the problem. The company is now offering replacements to anyone who bought one of the affected units, marking a change in policy after it previously refused user RMA requests.

Last month brought reports that some users of Radeon RX 7900 XTX MBA (Made By AMD) reference cards were experiencing hotspot temps of up to 110C. A few people contacted AMD with RMA requests, but the company refused, claiming these were normal junction temperatures. It added that anyone who was experiencing unexpected thermal throttling should contact AMD Support.

Legendary overclocker Roman ‘der8auer’ Hartung investigated the problem. After ruling out all potential causes, he posited that the RX 7900 XTX MBA’s vapor chamber was at fault. Further investigation by Hartung and Igor Wallossek of Igor’sLAB fame narrowed this down to insufficient fluid levels in the chamber, which AMD has now confirmed.

In an interview with PCWorld’s Gordon Mah Ung at CES 2023, AMD’s Scott Herkelman, Senior Vice President and General Manager at AMD Radeon, addressed the RX 7900 XTX overheating/throttling issue.

Herkelman started by reiterating that only reference and AMD-manufactured Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPUs sold by AMD and its partners are affected, not aftermarket cards featuring custom cooler designs. He then assured users that there were no safety concerns related to the problem, but card performance could be affected. “It all comes down to a small batch of vapor chamber actually have an issue, not enough water and it is a very small percentage […] that’s the root cause,” Herkelman said.

No word on how many units make up that very small percentage. An email from a system integrator to Wallossek alleged that 4 to 6 batches were affected, which would cover thousands of units. Herkelman said anyone experiencing the problem should call AMD for a replacement unit. AMD has also refuted allegations that it does not have enough units to replace all the faulty models.

Moving onto another subject, Herkelman claimed AMD still had the best-performing graphics card under $900 in the form of the Radeon RX 7900 XT. He also showed a graph showing how it compares to the RTX 4070 Ti, though you should probably check out our own review of Nvidia’s card for a more accurate comparison.

Lenovo unveils ThinkPhone by Motorola, a business phone with flagship specs

What just happened? At CES 2023, Lenovo unveiled a business-focused phone designed in partnership with its subsidiary, Motorola. The Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola combines flagship hardware with a slew of software features aimed at bolstering productivity.

The Lenovo ThinkPhone features a 6.6-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,400 (402 ppi) and an impressive 144Hz refresh rate. The screen supports HDR10+ content and is protected by a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

Under the hood, there’s a slightly-outdated Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC joined by either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1. Connectivity-wise, the phone is compatible with sub-6GHz 5G networks and Wi-Fi 6E, while its USB-C port supports DisplayPort 1.4.

On the rear, the ThinkPhone has three cameras — a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS, a 13-megapixel ultrawide capable of macro photography, and a depth sensor. There’s also a 32-megapixel front camera with autofocus.

Powering it all is a 5,000 mAh battery that can charge at up to 68W with the included charger or 15W wirelessly. The phone boasts an IP68 ingress rating and has passed MIL-STD-810H testing, meaning it should be somewhat rugged.

Lenovo added a customizable button to the left side of the phone, which can be programmed to quickly launch an app or perform an action, like turning on the flashlight. Its red color is also reminiscent of the ThinkPad TrackPoint pioneered by IBM in 1992.

The ThinkPhone will ship with Android 13, with Lenovo claiming it will receive three years of Android version updates and four years of security updates. The phone comes with the Moto Secure app preinstalled, which serves as a hub for security and privacy settings. It gives IT administrators remote access to options such as lock screen settings and network alerts.

As you might expect, the company also included a variety of productivity-focused software features. A ThinkPhone can automatically connect to a nearby Thinkpad, letting users quickly share text and images from one device to the other, with phone notifications also showing up on the laptop. Additionally, you can use the ThinkPhone as a webcam, similar to Apple’s Continuity Camera.

The Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola will start shipping “in the coming months.” Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing yet.

The Forgotten 1993 Concept Car You’d Never Guess Was A Ferrari

Something about this car strikes the eye wrong. It’s not that it doesn’t have a roof; many vehicles don’t have tops. Perhaps the starkly contrasting black front fenders with cutouts that look like weird little eyes. Maybe it’s the lack of a proper windshield, just the hint of a screen harkening back to racers from yesteryear. Road & Track called it a “duck-billed platypus” and a “smiling shoe.” Whatever the case, something is just off.

The iconic red paint job should be a dead giveaway, but without the familiar Prancing Horse logo on the body to reveal its true heritage, the truth still evades. Only when you peer inside and see Ferrari’s badge in the middle of the steering wheel do you understand this vehicle came from the famed Italian car maker. Welcome to the Conciso, a concept car first shown at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show (via RM Sotheby’s).

The Italian word “conciso” translates to “concise” in English, which means giving only the minimum necessary, to be brief, or removing anything superfluous. That’s precisely what the German coach builder Bernd Michalak (of Michalak Design) envisioned with the Conciso, based on the underpinnings of a 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS (the car is considered an ’89 because of this). This one-off weighed 800 pounds less because it dropped on an all-new aluminum alloy body, removed all the weatherproofing (i.e., the roof and windshield), and didn’t have any doors (via The Drive).

The Ferrari of a thousand logos

Before diving into more details, the stories behind concept cars are often as interesting as the vehicles, and the Conciso is no different. When scouring the Internet, you’ll find pictures and videos showing this car with an array of branding, both with and without the quintessential Prancing Horse logos.

A video from TheCaraf back in 2015 shows it bedazzled with badges from Ferrari to Michilak’s original Conciso graphics and the words “Francorchamps Motors” emblazoned on the sides. Yet, in photos from RM Sotheby’s auction in May 2018, it only had the Michalak graphics, no “Francorchamps Motors” vocabulary, and just the one lone Ferrari horse on the steering wheel.

In July 2019, it showed up on “Jay Leno’s Garage” alongside owner Franco Valobra (President and owner of Valobra Jewelry), who bought it at the RM Sotheby’s auction for only €109,250. During that episode, the Michalak graphics were gone, but it had so many horses on the shell that they could cause a stampede, so Valobra presumably made some changes. Interestingly, around three minutes in, Leno starts talking about the Ferrari badging on the car, despite the company’s notoriety for not putting badges on everything. Valobra remains oddly silent, and maybe he did so as not to admit guilt and incur the wrath of the Italian carmaker.

Get in the saddle of this Italian horse and ride

As for the car itself, Michalak kept the mid-mounted, transversally set, 3.2-liter, 270 horsepower V8 engine and signature gated five-speed manual transmission of the 328 GTS. Since it weighed 30% less than the GTS, it could get from zero to sixty in 5 seconds at a top speed of 173 mph, while the GTS time was 5.9 seconds with a ten-mile-per-hour slower top speed of 173 (via The Drive). The car is very agile on the road and feels “like a go-kart,” according to Jay Leno in his “Garage” episode.

The minimal interior features two bucket seats, four-point safety harnesses, and just enough of the 328’s instrumentation to get the job done. Cutouts on the interior of each “door” hold a helmet. This Ferrari was meant to be raced, not used as a daily driver, although Valobra claims he drives it to work as much as he can. Another unique feature is that both the front and rear sections open clamshell style, which makes it easy for the engine to be worked on. According to Autoweek, after Valobra purchased the car, he rebuilt the engine.

It’s ironic that to get into the car, one must lift a leg over the “door” and step inside, much the same way one might get into the saddle on a horse. It’s a very fitting touch on this genuine Italian horse.
