Actor Jeremy Renner ‘critical but stable’ after snowplough mishap

The US movie star had been ploughing snow at his property near Reno, Nevada when he suffered serious injuries.

American movie star Jeremy Renner, known for his role as Hawkeye in several Marvel blockbusters, was in a critical but stable condition following an accident, his representative said.

Renner, 51, had been ploughing snow when he suffered serious injuries, a representative told Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday.

“We can confirm Jeremy is in critical but stable condition with injuries suffered after experiencing a weather-related accident while ploughing snow earlier today,” Renner’s representative told the outlet, without specifying where the accident took place.

“His family is with him and he is receiving excellent care,” the representative, who was unnamed, added.

Renner owns property near Mt Rose-Ski Tahoe, an area near Reno, Nevada that has been hit by winter storms, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He recently posted on social media about severe weather conditions in the area around Lake Tahoe, which borders California and Nevada and is a world-renowned skiing destination.

On December 13, Renner tweeted a photo of a car buried by snow with the caption, “Lake Tahoe snowfall is no joke.”

Renner rose to prominence in the 2000s after garnering a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a United States army sergeant in the 2008 war thriller Hurt Locker. In 2010, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie The Town.

Renner also starred in two Mission: Impossible films, as well as Arrival, American Hustle and 28 Weeks Later. He appeared as Clint Barton, also known as superhero Hawkeye, in several Marvel films and a recent miniseries.

Renner currently stars in the Paramount+ crime series Mayor of Kingstown set to return for a second season later this year.

Israeli forces kill two Palestinian men in occupied West Bank

Ramallah, Occupied West Bank – The Israeli army has killed two Palestinian men during a raid on a village near the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.

Mohammad Samer Hoshiyeh, 22, and Fouad Mohammad Abed, 25, were shot dead early on Monday in Kufr Dan, northwest of Jenin, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

At least three others were injured during the raid, including one in critical condition, the ministry added.

Confrontations and armed clashes broke out with Israeli forces late on Sunday night after they raided Kufr Dan to demolish the homes of two Palestinians killed in a shootout at an Israeli military checkpoint in Jenin that led to the killing of an Israeli soldier, Bar Falah, several months ago.

Ahmad Ayman Abed and Abdulrahman Hani Abed were shot dead at the Jalameh checkpoint, the main entry point between the northern occupied West Bank and Israel, on September 14.

Israeli forces said in a statement on that they had been conducting operations in Kufr Dan to demolish the homes of the two men, and said that they had been attacked with gunfire, rocks and firebombs.

Hamas, the Palestinian group that rules Gaza, claimed Fouad Mohammed Abed as its member.

Videos shared by local media showed one of the homes being blown up using explosives.

Similar images showed the demolition of a second home in the same way.

Such home demolitions are regarded as “collective punishment” by Palestinians and human rights organisations.

The large-scale Israeli military raid, which included special forces, began on Sunday night and continued until Monday morning.

The two men shot dead on Monday are the first Palestinians to be killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank this year, as a result of an ongoing Israeli military campaign of intensified raids and killings for almost a year.

The United Nations (UN) marked 2022 as the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank in 16 years.

Israeli forces killed at least 171 Palestinians in the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem in 2022, including more than 30 children. At least 9,000 others have been injured.

Civilians confronting the Israeli army during raids and uninvolved bystanders have been killed, as well as Palestinian fighters in targeted assassinations and during armed clashes.

Following a string of individual attacks carried out by Palestinians in Israel that began in March, the Israeli army launched a campaign called “Break the Wave” that has included near-daily raids, mass arrests and killings in the West Bank, with a focus on Jenin and Nablus, where Palestinian armed resistance has grown more organised over the past year.

Israeli forces conducted raids in several other cities in the occupied West Bank on Monday morning including Nablus, Salfit and Ramallah, arresting at least 15 Palestinian men, according to prisoner groups.

In Ramallah, the army raided the al-Amari refugee camp and arrested the brother of Nasser Abu Hmaid, a Palestinian prisoner who died in Israeli custody last month after suffering from cancer for over a year.

On Sunday night, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who recently became national security minister in the far-right Israeli government inaugurated late last week, said he intends to enter the al-Aqsa mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem in the coming days.

The move by Ben-Gvir, a controversial figure who openly incites violence against Palestinians, could spark protests and a crackdown by Israeli forces at the sensitive Muslim holy site, amid conditions that the UN warned have reached “a boiling point”.

The new Israeli government, which includes religious Zionist and ultra-Orthodox parties, and is led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is said to be the most right-wing in Israel’s 74-year history.

His Likud party released the new coalition government’s policy priorities on Wednesday, the first of which promises to “advance and develop settlement in all parts of the land of Israel – in the Galilee, Negev, Golan Heights, and Judea and Samaria” – the latter of which are the Biblical names for the occupied Palestinian West Bank.

Vikings’ Justin Jefferson Hits Ref in the Back with Helmet During Frustrating Loss

The Packers got the better of Justin Jefferson on Sunday, and Jefferson’s own emotions got the better of him as well.

With six minutes left in the 2nd quarter, Vikings QB Kirk Cousins tossed his second pick of the game to Green Bay’s Adrian Amos. As Amos was getting corraled out of bounds, Jefferson tore his helmet off and swung it. The facemask caught the official in the shoulder, and Jefferson’s forearm hit him in the back.

The referee did not appear harmed. It definitely could have been worse. Had Jefferson hit the official with the crown of the helmet a few inches above the shoulder, we could be having a very different discussion right now.

Thankfully, that did not happen.

Jefferson had cause to be frustrated, even though his manner of expressing it was wrong. The star receiver amassed only 15 yards on one reception after totaling 284 yards on nine catches the first time the Vikings played the Packers.

VIDEO: Eagles’ Defensive End Josh Sweat Sent to Hospital with Brutal Neck Injury

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Josh Sweat was carted off the field Sunday on a stretcher after suffering a worrisome neck injury.

Sweat sustained the injury in a tackle attempt on New Orleans Saints running back Adam Prentice during the game’s first quarter. But as Sweat went for Prentice, he slammed head-first into the opponent’s side, snapping Sweat’s head back toward his body.

The collision left Sweat immobile and face-first on the turf.

The game came to a screeching halt as medical technicians rushed out to the field. Sweat was soon taken off the field and sent to a local hospital for treatment.

The Eagles ended up losing to the Saints 20-10 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.

The team has since delivered an update and said that Sweat does have movement in all his extremities.

Far-Left Health Advocacy Group ‘People’s CDC’ Calls for Continued Mask Mandates

A far-left (borderline Marxist) group calling itself the “People’s CDC” has called for more radical coronavirus policies like indefinite mask mandates and social distancing, charging that America’s relaxed pandemic policies stem from a racist eugenics impulse beholden to corporate interests.

Profiled at length in the New Yorker, the People’s CDC can best be described as a “ragtag coalition of academics, doctors, activists, and artists who believe that the government has left them to fend for themselves.” Founded by Mindy Thompson Fullilove, a professor of urban policy and health at the New School, the group has thousands of supporters who receive weekly newsletters and emails highlighting the latest pandemic trends while advocating stricter policies.

The People’s CDC also received funding from organizations like the Kresge Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a highly influential health philanthropy. Though Fullilove did not specify if the group has any supporters within the actual Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), member Edgar Rivera Colón said in a recent webinar that they have “comrades that are within the C.D.C. who are saying to us, ‘Go ahead with your bad selves.’”

A demonstrator holds a sign reading

While the group puts up a science-oriented front on its website, the rhetoric from some of its top members suggests Marxist leanings. For instance, not only does the group claim that the CDC relaxed pandemic policies to appease corporate interests under President Joe Biden’s leadership, but it also suggests that those relaxed policies had racist intent. Per the New Yorker:

The People’s C.D.C. strongly supports mask mandates, and they have called on federal, state, and local governments to put them back in place, arguing that “the vaccine-only strategy promoted by the CDC is insufficient.” The group has noted that resistance to masks is most common among white people: Lucky Tran, who organizes the coalition’s media team, recently tweeted a YouGov survey supporting this, and wrote that “a lot of anti-mask sentiment is deeply embedded in white supremacy.”

This kind of accusation is common for the People’s C.D.C. Their messaging has the unmistakable inflection of activist-speak, marked by a willingness to make eye-popping claims about the motivations of politicians, corporations, or anyone in power. “To name it clearly, the CDC’s policies are eugenic,” the Weather Report team wrote, in August. “They rely on and promote the indefensible stance that disabled and elderly, poor and working class people are disposable, unworthy of care, and unworthy of participation in society.” Eugenic policies have a long and ugly history, commonly associated with the Nazis, white supremacists, and others who advocate the racial purification of humanity. I asked Thill whether she truly believes that the C.D.C. is eugenicist, along these lines. “Just because a charge is difficult or impactful doesn’t make it a wrong charge,” she said.

The People’s CDC rejects the notion that individuals should be free to make their own choices about the coronavirus after enough information has been disseminated. In one Zoom meeting, Zoey Thill, a family physician in Brooklyn, said that individual risk assessment essentially means telling certain people in society to stay inside forever while granting a free pass to everyone else.

“When we say, ‘Do your individual risk assessment and plan accordingly,’ that says to certain people, ‘Stay inside forever—for fucking ever!’ ” she said. “For me, it’s about countering that. It’s about saying, ‘No, that’s not O.K.’”

The Associated Press

Member Jirmanus Saba, a filmmaker, said that the group believes “there’s no acceptable number of deaths.”

“We’re all responsible for the safety of all life,” said Saba.

Several public health officials and former public health officials have criticized the group for its radicalism and its ideological phrasing. Howard Koch, Harvard public health professor and former Assistant Secretary of Health, called the group’s “zero COVID” goal unrealistic and backward in its thinking. Likewise, Tom Frieden, who led the CDC under former President Barack Obama, said that while the group’s suggestions may be necessary for high-risk or immunocompromised people, its call for indefinite universal masking has no practical application.

“If you’re giving recommendations that no one’s going to follow, that’s not only nonproductive,” Frieden told the New Yorker, “It’s counterproductive, because that undermines your credibility.”

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ tops first box office of 2023

Avatar: The Way of Water kept Puss in Boots in galoshes as first No. 1 movie of 2023

Na’vi ruled and cats drooled at the weekend box office with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever holding onto third place.

Lester Fabian Brathwaite

It certainly is a happy new year for James Cameron and his blue brotherhood as Avatar: The Way of Water topped the box office for the third week in a row.

The sequel to the highest grossing movie of all time is doing some pretty decent numbers for itself, pulling in, per Comscore, an estimated $63.4 million over the weekend, taking its domestic cume to $421.5 million. That brings it within $16 million of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s cume so far of $437.9 million over eight weeks.

Globally, The Way of Water grossed another $186.7 million, for an international cume of $957 million, making it the highest grossing international release of 2022 and the second highest grossing international release since the start of the pandemic. Cameron’s blockbuster had already surpassed the worldwide billion dollar mark last week, putting its current total at $1.38 billion.

In its second week of release, Universal’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish earned $16.3 million, bringing its domestic gross to $60.7 million ($129.5 million worldwide). The third sequel in the box office top three, Wakanda Forever added another $4.8 million this weekend, and $7.4 million internationally, for a worldwide cume of $818.4 million.

The musical biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody came in fourth with $4.2 million and a domestic gross of $14.8 million; internationally it fared a bit better, snagging $8.3 million, which brings its global total to $27.9 million. Rounding out the top five movies of the new year is Damien Chazelle‘s star-studded ode to Old Hollywood, Babylon, which took in $2.7 million, for a domestic total of just $10.1 million.

Notably, no new movies opened in the top 10 at this weekend’s box office, though A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks opened in four theaters in New York and L.A. and the buzzed-about dancing doll-from-hell horror film M3GAN opened internationally in France, Mexico, and Belgium, scaring up $3.3 million.

A small dog is alive and well thanks to officers in Saginaw, Michigan, who knew exactly how to save her life.

The pup was rescued once she was discovered unconscious inside a house that caught fire on Thursday, Fox 2 reported Friday.

Per Michigan State Police, the people inside the house made it out safely that night but the dog, whose name is Delilah, was still trapped.

When firefighters spotted her near the door, they scooped her up and placed her in the hands of MSP troopers who knew she was in bad shape and needed their help.

After Delilah received oxygen for approximately 15 minutes she began breathing normally again, to everyone’s relief.

Video footage shows troopers caring for Delilah as she lay on the hood of a patrol vehicle, and one of them checked her over several times by shining a flashlight on her small body:

MSP Third District reported in another social media post that, following the rescue, Delilah was given back to the homeowners. A photo shows a smiling person holding the tiny dog that appears tired but grateful to be alive:

When an animal breathes in smoke it is also breathing in harmful chemicals, according to Wag Walking.

“Most cases of severe smoke inhalation come from house fires. The fire causes chemicals in smoke and soot to be inhaled by the pet, restricting oxygen delivery to the tissues of lungs. Depending on the materials being burned, additional dangerous toxins — such as acrolein or cyanide — may enter the body,” the site read.

In addition, a home fire can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation and a home can be engulfed in five minutes, according to Ready.gov.

The Michigan State Police said the agency’s mission is to “provide the highest quality law enforcement and public safety services” in the state.
