Entertainment Analyst: Xbox to Narrow PlayStation's Lead in 2023

Karol Severin, the entertainment media and tech analyst at Midia Research, has released his predictions for 2023 via GamesIndustry

Severin believes Xbox will “significantly narrow” the gap with PlayStation in 2023 due to Microsoft’s hardware-agnostic efforts and its focus to provide value for money.

The adverse macroeconomic climate couples well with Xbox’s cross-platform and hardware-agnostic efforts, as well as with its focus to provide value for money and mitigate the requirement for consumers to part with large sums of money at once,” said Severin.

“The combination of these dynamics mean Xbox is better positioned to thrive in a recessionary environment than PlayStation. As a result, Xbox will significantly narrow the gap in terms of console ownership and usage in 2023.”

Entertainment Analyst: Xbox to Narrow PlayStation's Lead in 2023

He added, “The effects of inflation and tightening disposable will be in full swing in 2023. Consumers will be looking to do two key things: decrease overall spending and/or increase value for money from their purchases. Traditionally, gaming had high entry-costs due to expensive games dedicated hardware and high price points for individual games. Furthermore, though gamers have been aging, gaming is not yet as equally distributed among age groups, as video or music. Therefore when it comes to household savings, games spend will be an immediate potential target to cut for the subsegment of non-gaming older parents (budget holders of younger gamers).

“In 2023, games companies will thus have to navigate the tall order of increasing value for money, while keeping entry costs flat, or ideally lower. Traditional unit sales-dependent business models will struggle in this macroeconomic weather. However, a number of games industry players are well positioned to thrive in these conditions.”

Upstart Chinese electric car brand delivered more cars than Nio in 2022

BEIJING — Another budget-priced electric car brand is taking off in China, this time selling compact SUVs.

Nezha, named after a feisty Chinese mythological character, claims its car deliveries more than doubled in 2022 to surpass 152,000 vehicles. Most deliveries were of the Nezha V, a compact SUV whose post-subsidy price starts at 83,900 yuan ($12,000).

In contrast, Nio‘s larger SUVs — with a longer driving range and many other features — start around 400,000 yuan.

However, Nio delivered more than 122,000 electric cars in 2022, up by a modest 34% from the prior year. That includes the company’s premium-priced sedans.

Nio has emphasized its focus is on the more niche, higher-end segment, but has hinted at plans to launch a mass market brand.

In an earnings call in early November, CEO William Li said the company had a meeting that day with its mass market team, which expected each model in the segment could sell more than 50,000 units a month, according to a FactSet transcript.

That’s potentially 600,000 cars per model per year.

Tesla needs to stay focused, bring in top management, says former board member

Budget electric car Hongguang Mini has held the bestseller spot among new energy passenger cars in China, a category which includes hybrids. As of November, year-to-date sales had exceeded 370,000 vehicles, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

However, the Hongguang Mini is a tiny car compared with Nezha’s SUVs and sedans.

Nezha also said it exported about 3,500 cars in 2022. Since late 2021, the company has pushed into Southeast Asia, starting with a partnership in Thailand. Nezha, also known as Neta, has an English-language website that shows it’s looking for partners in the Philippines and Cambodia.

The company is a brand under startup Hozon Auto. As of July 2022, Nezha said it had raised nearly 10 billion yuan for its Series D, or fourth stage of fundraising after initial investment.

China’s EV market shakes off economic slowdown

The Chinese government has supported the development of the domestic electric car industry. Cities have preferential policies that encourage people to switch to electric-powered cars.

And despite the drag of Covid controls on China’s retail sales in 2022, electric car sales remained a pocket of growth.

More than a quarter of passenger cars sold in 2022 through the end of November were new energy vehicles, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Monthly figures from the association typically come out in the middle of the month.

However, competition is fierce. Chinese battery and car manufacturer BYD remained a giant with sales of more than 911,000 electric cars in 2022 — about 180% more than a year earlier.

The company has a wide range of models. BYD’s new luxury brand Yangwang is slated for a detailed launch on Thursday.

Electric car brand Aion, a spinoff of state-owned GAC Motor, announced sales more than doubled in 2022 to a record high of 271,000 vehicles.

Huawei’s co-developed new Aito brand said that since it began deliveries in March 2022, cumulative deliveries as of the end of the year exceeded 75,000 vehicles.

Li Auto delivers more than Nio

Nio’s growth in 2022 also fell behind that of Li Auto, another U.S.-listed Chinese electric car company whose SUVs are in a similar price range. However, the company’s cars come with a fuel tank to extend the battery’s driving range.

Li Auto said its deliveries for the year grew by 47% to more than 133,000 cars.

Manhattan apartment sales plunge in fourth quarter as brokers fear a frozen market

Craig Warga | Bloomberg | Getty Images

Manhattan apartment sales fell by 29% in the fourth quarter, sparking fears of a frozen market in which buyers and sellers stay on the sidelines due to economic and rate fears.

There were 2,546 sales in the quarter, down from 3,560 last year, according to a report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel. The decline was the largest since the third quarter of 2020, during the depths of the pandemic.

Prices also declined for the first time since early 2020, with the median price down 5.5%.

The declines in both sales and prices mark the end of the roaring comeback in Manhattan real estate after the worst days of the pandemic and raise fears of continuing weakness into the new year. Rising interest rates, a weaker economy and a falling stock market, which has an outsized impact on Manhattan real estate, are all likely to weigh on the market this year.

Analysts say their big worry is a prolonged standoff between buyers and sellers — with sellers unwilling to list amidst falling prices and buyers pausing their searches until prices fall further.

“I could see the market moving sideways, with some modest declines in some sectors,” said Jonathan Miller, CEO of Miller Samuel, the appraisal and market research firm. “And it could weaken further if there is the backdrop of recession and job loss.”

Even as prices and sales drop, however, inventory remains tight as sellers hold off on listings. There were 6,523 apartments on the market at the end of the fourth quarter, according to the report, up only 5% from last year but still well below the historical average of around 8,000. Without a large increase in inventory, analysts say prices are unlikely to fall enough to lure back many buyers waiting for discounts. The average discount from initial list price to sales price was 6.5%, up from 4.1% in the third quarter, according to Serhant.

Rising interest rates have also moved more Manhattan buyers into all-cash deals, which accounted for 55% of all sales in the fourth quarter, the highest on record, according to Miller.

As with much of the recovery, the high-end and luxury segment remains the strongest. Median sale prices for luxury apartments — defined as the top 10% of the market — increased 4% in the fourth quarter, compared to a decline in the broader Manhattan market. Median prices for luxury apartments are up 21% compared to 2019, twice the increase as the broader market.

The outlook for 2023

The pipeline of deals in the works or recently signed suggests a slow first quarter. There were only 2,312 contracts signed in the fourth quarter, down 43% over last year, according to Brown Harris Stevens. The quarter was the worst for new contracts signed in the past decade, according to a report from Serhant.

“Contracts signed are a timelier indicator of demand and registered one of the slowest finishes to any year since 2008,” according to Brown Harris Stevens.

Brokers, however, say they remain optimistic and many are predicting an upside surprise in 2023, as rates stabilize and buyers find opportunities in a softer market. John Gomes, co-founder of the Eklund Gomes team at Douglas Elliman, said December was “on fire” with a frenzy of year-end deals.

“It really caught us off guard,” he said. “Things really turned around in December.”

Gomes said one buyer paid $20 million for a townhouse in Greenwich Village that wasn’t even on the market. He said a real estate investor made offers for four separate apartments in new developments “that look like they will be accepted today.”

Ian Slater at Compass said there was a big “disjoint” in the market in August and September, with a wide divide between buyers and sellers and the market started to weaken. “Now I am seeing buyers accept interest rates as the new normal and feel more comfortable purchasing — or at a minimum that prices aren’t falling.”

Gomes said one reason for the December burst of activity is foreign buyers, who started to return to the city in December. With the dollar weakening slightly and travel restrictions lifting around the world, brokers say buyers from the Middle East and China returned in December.

Brokers say buyers are also using cash to avoid the higher interest rates and taking advantage of lower prices. And developers with new apartment buildings on the market are lowering prices to unload unsold apartments.

“Developers are being realistic, they’re making concessions on price and closing costs,” he said. “I feel optimistic about the coming year.”

LaKeith Stanfield Engaged to Kasmere Trice Amid Paternity Claims

Most UNIQUE Celebrity Engagement Rings: J.Lo & More!

Sorry to bother you, but there’s been a development in LaKeith Stanfield‘s love life.

The Atlanta star is engaged to model Kasmere Trice amid paternity claims from another woman alleging that he secretly fathered her child. The allegations come after LaKeith announced his engagement to Kasmere, writing in a Dec. 30 Instagram post alongside a photo of his girlfriend rocking some bling on her wedding ring finger, “Happy birthday to you baby.”

Kasmere also confirmed that the Get Out actor had popped the question during a birthday trip to the Bahamas, tweeting that same day, “yea.. i’m having the best birthday. my baby made me mrs. Stanfield for my birthday!”

However, when the couple shared a picture of them ringing in the new year as fiancés on Dec. 31, paternity allegations surrounding LaKeith surfaced online. As seen in a now-deleted Instagram post captured by The Neighborhood Talk, artist Tylor Hurd claimed LaKeith had fathered her baby girl Apollo and shared a video montage showing the 31-year-old spending family time with the mother-daughter duo.

“Decided to leave being someone’s secret family in 2022,” she wrote in the caption. “meet Apollo Stanfield.”

Screenshots from the comments section of the now-deleted video also showed LaKeith and Tylor’s respective accounts exchanging words about the baby. “Thanks for respecting my not wanting to blast my child out to the internet. Very considerate of you,” read a message from LaKeith’s account, prompting Tylor to reply, “Value your privacy is why you lied to people saying she wasn’t your baby or that I was just a random? you value your privacy but your gf post everything y’all do lol okay.”

LaKeith’s account then wrote back, “I never once in my life said she wasn’t my baby. I hope this does whatever it was supposed to do for you.”

Instagram

While Tylor did not respond to LaKeith’s latest comment, she did post a statement on her Instagram Story shortly following her online conversation with the Knives Out alum. In a screenshot of her post captured by Page Six, the 24-year-old wrote, “just to clear a few things up I’m not jealous that’s [sic] he’s engaged to a woman he’s known for 5 months.”

Tylor added, “what I’m upset about is that he made more time to spend with this woman than he’s spent with Apollo her whole life and has been actively ignoring me when I’m trying to figure things out for our child. Those clips of him and her together are all I have in general cause he barely sees her.”

For his part, LaKeith—who welcomed his first child with The Mindy Project actress Xosha Roquemore in 2017—has seemingly moved past the drama. On Dec. 12, he wrote on his Instagram, “Back to work. Loved the holidays and spending time with family. Some really great moments with loved ones. Beautiful time with my fiancé and the reinforcement of our bond in the midst of any kind of climate.”

He added, “Love is a trip because at the same time as it can inspire really massive beautiful feelings of connectedness, it can also inspire pain and anger, and at the end of the day I think that’s part of what makes it so special.”

E! News reached out to LaKeith’s rep but did not receive a comment.

Southwest Airlines’ schedule stabilizes after holiday meltdown but costs are still piling up

Southwest Airlines stabilized its schedule over the weekend after about 16,000 cancellations since late last month, but its systemwide holiday meltdown could cost it hundreds of millions of dollars.

Southwest had canceled 304 flights since Friday, 2% of its schedule, most of them on Monday when U.S. airlines faced bad weather and ground stops in Florida tied to a Federal Aviation Administration equipment outage. For comparison, from Dec. 21 through Dec. 29 Southwest had scrubbed about 45% of its operation, a far bigger share than other major airlines, according to FlightAware.

Now come two more difficult tasks for Southwest: going through thousands of passenger reimbursement receipts and improving the internal technology that contributed to the meltdown.

Southwest's unique routing system compounded and snowballed, says former Continental Airlines CEO

“We have plans to invest in tools and technology and processes, but there will be immediate work to understand what lessons are learned here and how we keep this from ever happening again, because it cannot happen again,” Southwest CEO Bob Jordan, who took the helm in February, told staff Friday.

Jordan said employees from other departments have volunteered to help customers and process refunds. The carrier is working with FedEx to help get customers their luggage.

“We’ve cut the number of bags in half since Thursday and we’re on track to get the majority if not all bags shipped to our Customers later this week,” Jordan told staff on Monday.

On Tuesday, Southwest began offering travelers whose flights were canceled or significantly delayed between Dec. 24 and Jan. 2, and who didn’t travel or rebook, 25,000 Rapid Rewards points, a roughly $300 value, according to the airline.

The miles required to redeem for a ticket vary depending on demand and capacity. Over Easter weekend, for example, it currently costs more than 25,000 Rapid Rewards points to travel roundtrip between Baltimore and Los Angeles, but it would more than cover a ticket a week later.

Bad weather kicked off the issues last month, impacting flights throughout the U.S. But Southwest crews struggled to get reassigned automatically after all of the changes and were forced to wait on hold for hours with crew scheduling services. Hundreds of thousands of passengers were impacted, and Southwest is still working through a backlog of misplaced luggage.

The carrier had canceled about two-thirds of its flights for much of the last week in an attempt to get crews and planes where they needed to go, before operating close to normally on Friday.

The chaos could cost Southwest between $600 million and $700 million, according to estimates from Bank of America airline stock analyst Andrew Didora on Tuesday. That includes both lost revenue from refunds and the reimbursements to affected passengers, which could include expenses like hotels and rental cars.

Didora cut his fourth-quarter adjusted earnings forecast for Southwest to 37 cents a share from 85 cents.

A Southwest executive last week said the cancellations will “certainly” hit its fourth-quarter results but that it will take weeks to work through customers’ reimbursement requests.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg vowed to hold Southwest accountable if it didn’t provide customers with refunds and reimbursements, though such fines associated with a failure to pay back customers can take months if not years.

Southwest shares fell 3.2% to $32.60 on Tuesday, a bigger drop than rivals. The Dallas-based airline is scheduled to report results on Jan. 26 but is likely to preview the meltdown’s costs before then.

New to the job market? These 5 ‘soft’ skills could give young workers an edge, according to LinkedIn

As recession fears and layoffs make the headlines, fresh graduates may find themselves stumbling into an uncertain job market.

recent survey of 1,000 U.S. graduates aged between 18 and 54 in the last 12 months indicated that many are anxious about their “career readiness.”

Almost half of recent graduates said they didn’t apply for entry level jobs because they felt underqualified, according to the survey.

And that’s even more of a challenge for those new to the workforce.

“One of the challenges that young workers may face is lack of experience as they enter the workforce,” said Pooja Chhabria, career expert and head of editorial for Asia-Pacific at LinkedIn.

Hard skills can help you get a recruiter’s attention, but soft skills can help you land the job.

Pooja Chhabria

career expert, LinkedIn

While Gen Z workers — those between 18 and 24 years old — may worry about their lack of experience, some industries are “aggressively” hiring, according to LinkedIn.

For example, job postings on the platform have grown year on year in October 2022 for sectors like government administration — which registered a 52% growth in Australia and a whopping 88% in Singapore.

Retail job postings grew 114% in Australia and 49% in India, while openings in logistics and supply chain grew by 41% in Singapore.

Those jobs may be from different industries, but they have one thing in common — an emphasis soft skills, which Chhabria stressed are valued across multiple sectors and jobs.

How to stand out

Companies have been shifting from a “traditional experience-based” hiring approach to a skills-first one, Chhabria said.

That’s because of the “rapid pace of change and disruption” that industries are going through, and skills-based hiring helps employers to hire talent that matches businesses’ evolving needs, she added.

“87% of recruiters believe skills are crucial as they vet candidates. A skills-based approach also creates a much broader talent pool, and diversity of talent is necessary for remaining competitive in today’s marketplace.”

“LinkedIn data reveals that across Asia Pacific, a skills-based approach to hiring will increase the overall Gen Z talent pool by 10.8 times in Australia, 14.1 times in India and 7 times in Singapore,” she said.

The hiring rate in Asia-Pacific is still relatively high despite recession fears, says LinkedIn

While hard skills remain crucial to securing a job, soft skills can help candidates stand out from the pack.

“Hard skills can help you get a recruiter’s attention, but soft skills can help you land the job,” Chhabria added.

“Hard skills are the technical skills required to do your job. For instance, if you are applying to be a sales professional, then you need to have knowledge of sales processes and how to use a CRM platform,” she said.

“[But] you also need soft skills such as presentation skills to deliver a great sales pitch to your customer or communication skills so you can communicate with confidence with your team and the customer.”

These are the top five soft skills young workers should focus on building in the new year, according to LinkedIn:

  • Communication: Being able to communicate your ideas, views, and opinions concisely so people can understand what you are sharing.
  • Time management: With the rise of remote working, time management has become even more important for building trust with your employer and demonstrating the value you’re adding to the team.
  • Critical thinking: Ability to understand and address a situation based on all available facts and information.
  • Problem solving: Coming up with solutions and looking for new ways to resolve issues.
  • Interpersonal skills: In a post-pandemic workplace, the ability to build relationships and collaborate with teams globally is an important skill.

Taking on new assignments or projects can improve your ability to problem solve and provide opportunities to learn how to better handle stress, criticism, and conflict.

Sherlock Creator Courts Benedict Cumberbatch to Return – E! Online

Steven Moffat, the co-creator of Sherlock—which starred Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman—is actively courting his original stars to return for more. Find out what he said.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Hilarious Mother’s Day Tributes on SNL

Steven Moffat is ready to get the gang back together.

The co-creator of Sherlock told BBC’s Today that he would “start writing tomorrow” if stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman ever decided to reprise their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively.

Though Moffat admitted that both actors have moved on to “bigger and better things,” he still joked, “Martin and Benedict, ‘Please come back?'”

Since Sherlock ended its run after four seasons in 2017, Cumberbatch earned a second Oscar nomination for 2021’s The Power of the Dog and reprised his role of Doctor Strange in several MCU blockbusters, including 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Freeman, meanwhile, is no stranger to the MCU himself—most recently reprising his role as Everett K. Ross in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He also currently stars on Breeders, the FX comedy he co-created, which was renewed for a fourth season in July.

So, yeah, they’ve both been a little busy.

However, despite his packed schedule, Cumberbatch hasn’t ruled out a potential Sherlock return.

“I still say never say never,” he told Esquire in November 2021. “I really like that character. It’s just, the circumstances need to be right and I think maybe it’s too soon now to see it have another life. I think, wonderful as it is, it’s had its moment for now. But that’s not to say it wouldn’t have another iteration in the future.”

As Sherlock Holmes has taught us over the years, patience is a virtue!

In the meantime, all four seasons of Sherlock are available to stream on Crackle.
