Nithya Raman Calls on Governor Candidates to Back Uncapped Film Credits

Entertainment

In the final days before the Tuesday election, L.A. Councilwoman Nithya Raman urged candidates for governor on Friday to support uncapped tax incentives for film and TV production.

Raman appeared outside Radford Studios with entertainment figures who support her mayoral campaign, including Mike Schur, Cord Jefferson, and Kay Cannon.

“We must ensure that Hollywood remains a reliable on-ramp into the middle class for Angelenos,” Raman said. “We must protect that before it slips further away.”

The dramatic downturn in Hollywood production has been a key issue in the races for mayor and for governor. Mayor Karen Bass has also called for uncapped state tax credits, has moved in recent months to cut city location fees, and has won the support of three below-the-line Hollywood unions.

Popular on Variety

Spencer Pratt, the former reality TV star, has accused his two rivals of failing to do more to stop the decline of industry jobs.

“Notice how Hollywood fell off a cliff IMMEDIATELY after Karen Bass took office?” Pratt said on X on Friday. “If you give her another 4 years, that’ll be a wrap on Hollywood. She will finish the job of killing our city’s golden goose. Vote like your life depends on it, LA. It does.”

Among the top three contenders in the gubernatorial polls, only the Republican, Steve Hilton, has called for unlimited state tax incentives for Hollywood productions.

Xavier Becerra, the leading Democrat in most polls, has said he will increase the $750 million program, but has not pledged to make it unlimited. Rolling out his Hollywood policy last week, Becerra vowed to hold an entertainment summit early in his administration to gather input from stakeholders. Tom Steyer has likewise pledged to expand the program, but has not endorsed an uncapped tax credit.

Among the candidates for governor, only Matt Mahan and Antonio Villaraigosa have pledged to eliminate the cap entirely, though none has said how much that would cost. Raman has not endorsed any of the candidates.

The state’s $750 million tax incentive is set to expire in 2030. On Friday, Raman also urged the candidates for governor to seek an early extension of the program to ensure stability.

She also took a swipe at Pratt for sharing campaign videos generated by AI — a sensitive subject for many in the industry.

“I would say to people who really care about the state of Los Angeles, and to people who care about keeping Hollywood in L.A., I would choose away from the candidate who has relied on sharing AI videos as his primary mode of communication about these issues,” Raman said.

Raman was also asked about a report in L.A. Material that her campaign had reached out to Rae Huang, a candidate to her left, to urge her to drop out and consolidate the Democratic Socialist vote. Raman confirmed that her campaign had had discussions with Huang.

“I think both of us feel very real alarm about the idea that — even if it’s only for the next five months — that we could have Spencer Pratt and millions of dollars fueled by a nationwide MAGA network essentially corroding the civic life of the city,” Raman said. “That to me is something that strikes real fear in my heart, and I think it’s definitely worth figuring out how to achieve the bold positive progressive vision that I have and that she shares for Los Angeles.”

Canada’s Casino Nova Scotia to Leave Downtown Halifax

Entertainment

Plans to relocate Casino Nova Scotia from Halifax’s waterfront to Dartmouth Crossing are progressing. The Nova Scotia government confirmed it has struck a deal with Great Canadian Entertainment to build a new casino complex in Dartmouth. The company will own and manage the construction, operation, and long-term maintenance of the site, which is expected to open by 2029.

The Old Property Will Be Available for Redevelopment

According to a recent report by The Chronicle Herald, the move has been carefully planned. After years of discussions, Dartmouth Crossing emerged as an obvious choice thanks to its status as a retail and commercial hub located just across the harbour. The area’s highway access, proximity to hotels and a steady stream of foot traffic offer indisputable advantages.

The existing Halifax casino, situated along the waterfront, will remain open during the transition. The province has also begun searching for potential buyers interested in the old property. Licensing conditions ensure that the land can be redeveloped without complications tied to the casino lease. Officials say the sale could take a year to a year and a half, but no final timeline has been set.

Great Canadian Entertainment has already purchased land near the Dartmouth Crossing retail district for the new venue and is now working to secure a local permit. The company and the province, through the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation, will cover construction and relocation costs and continue to supply gaming equipment.

Dartmouth Crossing Boasts Notable Advantages

Despite the expected benefits, skeptics have questioned how the relocation might affect Halifax’s downtown. The casino has been a fixture on the waterfront for decades, first opening in 1995 before moving into its current standalone building in 2000. Its presence has contributed to the area’s nightlife and tourism economy, attracting locals and visitors.

Officials, however, have downplayed concerns about economic loss, arguing that the location will be highly beneficial for the Halifax Regional Municipality in the long run. They noted that Dartmouth Crossing already attracts visitors from the entire province, making it an obvious choice to sustain or even bolster gaming-related traffic.

The province does not expect this move to disrupt revenue streams. Casino operations in Halifax and Sydney generated more than $40 million last year. These funds are essential for supporting public services like health care and education. Officials say these revenues should remain stable, regardless of where the casino is located.

KING and Ruaa Kayy team up for Lukkhe song ‘Jee Lenge,’ watch

Music

KING and Ruaa Kayy have come together for the romantic track ‘Jee Lenge’, the latest release from the soundtrack of the upcoming Prime Original series Lukkhe. Unveiled by Prime Video India and Warner Music India on April 24, the song introduces a softer and more intimate mood to the album following the earlier high-energy track ‘Bulletproof.’

music KING and Ruaa Kayy team up for Lukkhe song 'Jee Lenge,' watchKING and Ruaa Kayy team up for Lukkhe song ‘Jee Lenge,’ watch

Composed by KING and Bharg Kale, with music production by Bharg and lyrics penned by KING, ‘Jee Lenge’ reflects a restrained and emotionally layered soundscape. The track has been developed under the guidance of Music Supervisor Mohan Nerkar, who helms the overall soundscape of the series and co-supervised the song alongside Bhavya Anand and Rajrishi Murthi. Together, the collaborators shape a listening experience that highlights vulnerability and emotional connection.

Within the narrative of the series, ‘Jee Lenge’ captures the evolving relationship between Palak Tiwari’s character Sanober and Lakshvir Singh Saran’s character Lucky. The song reflects the comfort two people find in each other during uncertain phases of life. Positioned as a quieter emotional moment within the larger story, the track adds depth to the series’ musical landscape while strengthening its romantic thread.

Directed by Himank Gaur, the series is produced by Vipul D Shah and Rajesh Bahl under the banners of Optimystix Entertainment and White Guerrilla LLP. The show is created and executive produced by Agrim Joshi and Debojit Das Purkayastha.

Lukkhe features Raashii Khanna in a lead role alongside KING, who makes his acting debut with the series. The cast also includes Palak Tiwari in her streaming debut and Lakshvir Singh Saran, along with Nakul Roshan Sahdev, Kritika Bharadwaj, Shivankit Parihar, Yograj Singh and Ayesha Raza in supporting roles.

With ‘Jee Lenge‘ now available across music streaming platforms, the track adds another emotional layer to the build-up ahead of the series’ premiere. Lukkhe is scheduled to stream exclusively in Hindi on Prime Video across India and more than 240 countries and territories worldwide starting May 8, marking the platform’s latest youth-focused original release.

The Sounds Behind ZHU’s New Album ‘Black Midas’

Music

He’s aiming for something dark, immersive, and after-hours…

ZHU does things his own way. The San Francisco Bay Area is a true pop voyager, someone who is building their own digital identity.

It’s now a decade on from his debut album ‘Generationwhy’ and he is showing no sign of slowing down, with new album ‘Black Midas’ out today (April 24th).

The material expands on his electronic pop sound, drifting into late-night reverie while absorbing cinematic textures. You can hear aspects of trip-hop in there, with the murky textures adding something distinctive to the project.

Fusing deep house and crisp, melodic techno into the mix, ‘Black Midas’ is one of his most impactful statements yet. With ZHU set to touch down at London’s Roundhouse on July 18th, CLASH caught up with him to discuss the sounds that informed his new album…

Portishead – ‘Dummy’

Adrian Utley’s guitar tones on ‘Glory Box’ is probably one of my favourite dark, moody, and groaning sounds on any record. I love how cinematic it is… The vulnerability of Beth’s voice and the combo of the trip hop production… I can listen to over and over again. I was driving a lot when I was making ‘Black Midas’, and a lot of the drives were long night drives, so yeah… Portishead.

Massive Attack – ‘Mezzanine’

I know my current album is a club record, but I may have to make a trip-hop album next… I would be great at it, since I’ve been bumping Massive Attack for weeks.

Having to record, write, mix, and finish this entire record all out of a moving SPRINTER van, I felt like Bond on a heist… ‘Mezzanine’ definitely added to the feeling of my story.

It allowed me to tap into the melancholy and power at the same time. Angel’s got to be an all time great.

Sade – ‘Love Deluxe’

I mean, the voice, the groove. This record is as warm as a mother’s hug after a long day. It’s more comforting than a bowl of spicy rigatoni after being trapped in a winter blizzard.

The writing, arrangement, mix is all very simple and elegant. Less is more.

Faithless – ‘Sunday 8pm’

Dance music rarely tells a story these days. Maxi Jazz has got a message tho. I guess that’s why people don’t really listen to too many electronic albums… Stories have to start coming back into the music for people to care. This album gave me a reason to want to add story to the music. The why. The reason.

Groove Armada – ‘Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)’

Vibes. Sometimes people don’t need to talk so much. When music has a good groove, people shut the fuck up.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced pre-orders are now live, and the Collector’s Edition even includes sea shanty sheet music

Music

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is heading our way in just a few months, but you can already pre-order your copy ahead of the July 9 release date. Doing so will net you the Blackbeard’s Crimson Pack DLC as well as the Master Assassin Character and Naval Packs should you opt for the Deluxe Edition. It’s that Collector’s booty that’s offering the most valuable pre-order bonuses, though.

The full package comes with all that digital goodness, Edward Kenway’s brooch, a world map, Kenway’s logbook, an exclusive steelbook cover and… sea shanty sheet music. I don’t know if you were on the same algorithm as me during the pandemic, but 2020’s calling.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced pre-orders are live now, starting from $59.99 for the standard edition, moving up to $69.99 for the Digital Deluxe, and $199.99 for the full Collector’s package.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Collector’s Edition

The Collector’s Edition is actually available at Amazon, which is a rarity. You’ll find the $199.99 package still available on the shelves at the time of writing.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was unveiled just yesterday, but is already coming up fast. The remake goes beyond a traditional remaster, bringing an “entirely reworked” combat system into the fray, to push the game more towards an action experience. Improvements have hit parkour mechanics, stealth offerings (that immediate desynchronization is out the window), and – obviously – visuals.

Loading screens are gone, there’s new quests to get underway – plenty of changes are heading out way in the new release.

Black Flag Resynced pre-orders are still widely available across the web, for both PS5 and Xbox Series X, but we often see Collector’s Editions moving a little faster.

When is the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced release date?

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9 on both PS5, Xbox Series X and PC.

Mr Scruff, Myd, Scarlett O’Malley Pick Songs That Bring People Together

Music

Flash Festival is all about community. The Tuscany event combines great music, delicious food, and incredible people – begun as a birthday party, it retains that celebratory air, with fans returning year-in and year-out to absorb the one-off atmosphere.

With yoga, cooking tutorials, and all manner of wholesome activities on site, Flash Festival serves up some excellent ice-breakers, but in the end, it’s all about the music, and the atmosphere on the dancefloor.

This year’s line-up is packed, and ahead of the gates of Flash Festival swinging open once more CLASH invited maverick turntablist Mr Scruff, French guru Myd, and English riser Scarlett O’Malley to pick out songs that will unify the dancefloor.

Mr Scruff…

Brothers Guiding Light – ‘Getting Together’

Beautiful Philly dancer from 1973, arranged by Vince Montana. A lovely, soulful, sentimental and positive tune about getting yourself together and appreciating what you have. A hug for the whole dance floor!

Bob Marley – ‘Is This Love’ (Bill Laswell Remix – Danny Krivit Edit)

Mr. K’s edit of the Bill Laswell ambient translation of ‘Is This Love’ from 1997. I love the way that this creeps in and builds, and the cheers of recognition as the elements gradually come into being. A masterclass in teasing & pace, and lots of eye contact and singing on the dancefloor by the time this one gets going.

Sylvester – ‘Over & Over’

I can’t really think of a more perfect, joyful song than this ashford and Simpson penned classic. Nine minutes of unbridled soulful energy and beautiful arrangement. Sounds like they were having a real party in the studio recording this.

Myd…

Harun Kolçak – ‘Gir Kanima’

I love to get people on the dancefloor by getting them to do weird dances. Let’s start a party like a wedding on a beach at sunset.

Yoong – ‘It’s Easy’

Let’s get the crowd in the vibe by talking with them (NOT WITH A MIC). This one says it all: IT’S EASY.

Rex The Dog – ‘Sicko’

With this song : 1 – People look at each other, 2 – They look at me 3 – They close their eyes and dance!

Scarlet O’Malley…

Scarlett O’Malley – ‘5am Operator’

My most recent track out on fabric records. A little more moody and minimal from me, I love the percussion in this track, you’ll never hear a track from me without a ton of congas and bongos. I also love the vocal and the fact it’s 128bpm, my current favourite bpm. Very groovy, very smooth, very me!

Tino – ‘Tinto!’

I love this whole EP from Tino on Garrett David’s Global Swing label, but this track in particular I think has really special elements. Again great percussion and really nice use of vocal samples and vocal fx to create a really cool groover. This track in particular stands out for me with the Latin drum breaks, and really dramatic piano and stabs, it really is just cool as fuck. I am a Tino Stan and proud!

Scarlett O’Malley – ‘Juice Break’

Another one from me but I feel like ‘Juice Break’ is really doing the rounds again recently with a lot of my favourite DJs playing it out so big special mention to my baby! I created this track really for the club and the dancefloor and to see it getting such a great renaissance a year and a half post-release has made me fall in love with it all over again! Sassy, driving full of vocal chops always, it’s ‘Juice Break’ for the win!

Flash Festival takes place in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy between May 13th – 16th.

Recent and Remarkable: Records from Early Spring 2026

Music

Paper Wings, Mountains on the Moon
Emily Mann and Wila Frank, aka Paper Wings, play indie folk with immediacy, pulling listeners into their world from the first riff. But when the two sing together, an entire lineage of traditional music floods in. An instant classic.

Mattie & Debbie, Satan’s Junction
Hyper-talented, unrelentingly creative, deeply weird. Stash Wyslouch and Sean Trischka of Mattie & Debbie are two of a kind, and Satan’s Junction explores their shared musical interests: funky bluegrass, falsetto, shredding, protest songs, love songs, “Yankee Doodle.” The album is like a roller coaster; sweet country-rock dance numbers build up steam before freefalling into decidedly heavier territory. Don’t skip Satan’s Junction. Hail Mattie & Debbie.

Katherine Priddy, These Frightening Machines
Priddy’s third album finds the British singer-songwriter expanding her sonic palette with stunning results that defy easy categorization. At times the music is dissonant and driving; at others, jazzy and sardonic, and it closes with a pair of stripped-down, folky ballads. Priddy’s soft, poetic voice stands up to dark emotional themes, pounding drums, and aural exploration.

Goran Ivanovic, Far Away Feeling
Ivanovic continues to carve out his own sound, pulling from Balkan folk traditions, classical compositional structures, American roots music, and the Spanish guitar. This collection of originals and one Bulgarian folk song, “Dospatsko Horo,” finds Ivanovic reinvigorated, playing his guitars with equal measure of excitement and dexterity.

Dylan Golden Aycock, No New Summers
Aycock’s approach to American Primitive guitar feels less concerned with impressive picking, leaning more toward expansiveness. His improvisational compositions blend ambient exploration with a touch of twang, leaving vast sonic ripples in their wake. [Editor’s Note: While new to us, this record was released in March 2025.]

José González, Against the Dying of the Light
González has embraced an African desert-blues influence, and his enchanting, rhythmic fingerstyle proves a perfect vessel for this universal prayer for humanity. When he pulls back, his soft nylon-string strums and bilingual lyricism seek connection.

Hurray for the Riff Raff, Live Forever
Thanks to a 2024 photo assignment for Acoustic Guitar, I was lucky enough to attend a handful of Hurray for the Riff Raff shows around the time this live album was recorded. In preparation, I listened to their 2024 release, The Past Is Still Alive, on repeat, but the live show was something else entirely. The passion, energy, and humanity of Hurray for the Riff Raff are expertly captured on this album, culled from two sold-out performances at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.

Wendy Eisenberg, Wendy Eisenberg

Massive, emotional, Baroque folk from a daring guitarist. Eisenberg’s virtuosic chops inform dazzling and ethereal arrangements; you don’t have to listen too closely to the lyrics to feel these are love songs.

music Joey Lusterman

Joey Lusterman

Opinionated creative slash beginning guitarist. Joey has worked in every department at Acoustic Guitar in the past 10+ years: front desk, ad sales, editorial, sound guy, camera man, booth babe, email coder, podcast editor, photographer, book designer…
