TaxWatch: Is driving a big part of your business? Good news: IRS increases tax-deductible mileage rate. Here’s how much you can deduct.

The Internal Revenue Service is making deductibles for work-related driving costs a little more generous for 2023.

Come tax time, eligible taxpayers rely on the tax agency’s standard mileage rate to determine the deductible costs of using an automobile for work purposes.

For 2023, the rate is climbing three cents to 65.5 cents per mile, the IRS recently announced.

The IRS announcement on standard mileage rates is a yearly event. But as gas prices broke records last year, the tax agency made a rare mid-year increase to the rate.

Gas prices, on average, are back at less painful prices. Wednesday’s national average was $3.26, versus $3.28 one year earlier, AAA data showed. But rising inflation is still pinching many wallets.

Most employees commuting to their job cannot use the deduction, H&R Block
HRB,
-1.85%

noted. But the categories of taxpayers who can still opt to claim the mileage as part of their business expenses include small business owners and self-employed workers like independent contractors such as ride-share drivers, the national tax-preparation company said.

Even for eligible taxpayers, the rules only apply to work-related trips from the office during work hours to, for example, visit a client, the company noted. The rules do not apply to the initial trips to/from the office.

Taxpayers have the choice of tallying up their actual vehicle-use costs, instead of the optional standard mileage rate, the IRS noted. Either way, however, the IRS will still be expecting records of miles traveled and costs incurred, experts say.

The optional standard mileage rates apply to the eligible business uses of electric and hybrid vehicles in addition to gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, the IRS noted.

Entertainment Giants Teaming Up on Advertising Currency Initiative, Announce Plan to Unify Streaming Viewership Data

Entertainment

There’s significant movement in the evolution of premium video advertising’s “currency.”

On Monday, OpenAP, the advanced advertising firm founded by the owners of most of the large TV networks, says that it will create a joint industry committee to focus on premium video currency, with the intent to have multiple currency options in place ahead of the 2024 upfront.

Warner Bros. Discovery, NBCUniversal, Fox Corp., Paramount Global and TelevisaUnivision are all on board with the plan. Warner Bros. Discovery executive vp of digital ad sales and advanced advertising, as well as NBCUniversal ad sales president Krishan Bhatia, tell The Hollywood Reporter in an interview that they expect other publishers and programmers to join them soon.

“I’m confident we will have more members join in short order, in the coming weeks and months,” Bhatia said. “And we’ve already gotten really positive indications from other programmers.”

The catch is that any new members need to be focused on premium long-form video (sorry, TikTok), and need to be willing to share their streaming data (more on that below). The two obvious players in the space are Disney and Netflix, each of which have launched new ad-supported streaming tiers in recent months.

For decades, measurement giant Nielsen has dominated the TV currency market through its panel-driven products, though in recent years other competitors, and new products from Nielsen, have complemented those efforts.

A common currency is seen as a requirement for advertisers, media buyers and programmers to meaningfully transact.

The new committee suggests that the future of premium video, be it on linear TV or streaming platforms, will have multiple currencies for programmers and marketers to transact with. Nielsen, it should be noted, will be one of those currencies.

“There was a fair amount of alignment and coalescence around the need for it, how to do it and also with whom,” Bhatia added. “There’s a handful of new measurement companies and currency providers that have emerged as the leaders, in addition to the incumbents, and at the same time, I think it still wasn’t moving fast enough to really take advantage of the opportunity to ensure a more accurate, more precise and a more speedy way of measuring cross-platform premium video.”

Notably, the companies are also agreeing to create a programmer data set that will harmonize first-party viewership data from their respective streaming services (think Paramount+, HBO Max, Peacock, etc.) using OpenAP infrastructure.

The group intends to have the viewership data audited by an independent auditor, and to work with third parties like the Video Advertising Bureau (VAB), Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and other trade groups to accelerate measurement efforts.

Agencies and advertisers will be able to choose which currencies they want to transact with.

“We want to make sure that we’re aligning on standards, and have common definitions of what an impression is, or what a view is, or how a stream is calculated, and we want to make sure that each of the individual programmer groups are looking at it from the same point of view and that all of the measurement companies — whether or not it’s Nielsen or VideoAmp, or ComScore or others — that they are also aligned to the same definitions,” said Jim Keller, EVP, Digital Ad Sales and Advanced Advertising at Warner Bros. Discovery. “We don’t think that the industry moves forward if there are different ways of looking at the same types of data sets. And if we do it all in a privacy-compliant way, we believe that we’ll be able to move the business forward collectively.”

In an indication of the significance of the move, OpenAP released a joint statement attributed to NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell, Paramount CEO Bob Bakish, TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

“The sustainability of the premium video advertising model depends on an ecosystem for measurement that is transparent, independent, inclusive, and accurately reflects the way all people consume premium video content today – across multiple screens, connections, and devices,” the CEO statement said. “By coming together to establish this JIC, we can collaborate and accelerate the efforts to implement a new multi-currency future that fosters more competition, inclusivity and innovation and will ultimately better serve advertisers, agencies and consumers.”

Inoperable Lung Cancer: Current Advances, News, and Trends

Menu

Spotlight On: Inoperable Lung Cancer

By Foster Lasley, MD, as told to Kara Mayer Robinson

If your lung cancer can’t be treated with surgery, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do.

You may still have treatment options like radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Nonsurgical treatments can lead to good outcomes and they’re commonly used around the world today.

Inoperable lung cancer is simply a tumor that surgery can’t treat, which could be because your cancer is in a difficult spot to reach, it’s spread outside your lungs, or you have other serious health conditions.

For example, if your lungs aren’t healthy enough in general, or you have a prior condition like heart disease, it can make surgery too risky.

How Do You Treat Inoperable Lung Cancer?

It’s up to you and your doctor to decide which options are best for you. Every person is different, so your best treatment plan is based on your specific needs.

Radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy can each be used to treat inoperable lung cancer. Your doctor may recommend one treatment or a combination of treatments.

What Are the Latest Advances in Inoperable Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer treatment continues to improve thanks to ongoing improvements in detection and treatment.

CT scans and other screening methods are becoming more and more capable of detecting tumors early on, when they’re more treatable.

Different combinations of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy are being tested in clinical trials to figure out the best order and period of time for each treatment.

Doctors are constantly reviewing the latest research to find tweaks to improve care.

What’s Coming in the Near Future?

There’s a lot of research in the works.

Current and upcoming clinical trials are looking at:

  • How to tailor treatment to individual cancer types
  • How to treat higher numbers of metastatic sites
  • Improving detection of small sites of distant metastases so that they can be treated

Experts are also discussing how to handle metastases to the brain. Doctors have different opinions on the best approach.

Exciting research is being done to look at the use of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)  in combination with checkpoint inhibitors. SBRT is a type of radiotherapy that uses 3D imaging to target tumors all over your body. Checkpoint inhibitors are a type of drug that blocks proteins found in some cancer cells.

Using checkpoint inhibitors combined with other treatment methods may allow doctors to better treat lung cancer without surgery. This is especially exciting for people with inoperable lung cancer. Clinical trials are still in the early phase I stage, but this could be a big development.

Another exciting new development is the increasing use of SBRT to decrease the amount of oligometastatic sites in your body, often in combination with other therapies.

How Do Disparities in Health and Health Care Impact Inoperable Lung Cancer?

Unfortunately, recent research shows racial disparities for minorities in how long they have to wait for cancer care.

Many wealthy communities in the U.S. have an abundance of medical resources at their disposal. They’re also more concentrated around major cities.

But this means lower income areas, which have more people of color, are comparatively underserved. When access is difficult, and a larger area with more people only has a few cancer care locations, this can create a bottleneck and longer wait times for care.

To combat this, public and private practices must make an effort to establish sites in these lower income and rural areas so that they’re closer to underserved communities.

We work hard in my practice to make sure patients get the same care regardless of race, ethnicity, and background, in a way that’s personalized to their specific needs and health conditions.

What Can You Do to Manage the Stigma of Lung Cancer and Other Mental Health Concerns?

People may assume your cancer is self-inflicted due to smoking. But it can happen even if you’ve never smoked a cigarette. There are plenty of other factors that play a role, including your family history of lung cancer.

This stigma, along with the emotional challenges of having lung cancer, can take a toll on your mental health, which plays a big role in holistic care.

If you lose hope or feel like your quality of life is getting worse, it can have a negative effect on your emotional and physical health. This can lead to a lack of exercise and high levels of stress, which can harm your treatment process and outcomes.

To help with this, I recommend finding a support group in your area. There are more and more popping up across the nation. If you can’t find one locally, there are many online communities willing to help and provide resources during your treatment process.

It’s also a good idea to exercise, eat right, and try to live your life as normal. Doing so helps with positivity and overall happiness, which can stave off stress and depression. A positive outlook and can-do attitude go a long way in helping to achieve a better outcome.

What’s the Outlook for Inoperable Lung Cancer?

There’s still hope if your lung cancer is inoperable. Modern medicine has found ways to treat patients with inoperable lung cancer effectively, so it’s absolutely vital you keep hope, stay positive, and fight.

Every day, doctors around the world are conducting clinical trials to find new, better ways to treat inoperable lung cancer. The solution to your specific case could be right around the corner, so we all have to keep going to get there.

How a ‘Dry January’ could help your health

How a 'Dry january' could help your health

Having a “dry January,” or giving up alcohol for the first month of the year, is a trend.

And it’s not a bad idea, according to a drug and alcohol rehab counselor with Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Not consuming alcohol can have many , said Alan Berki, from sleeping better and having more time for other hobbies to saving money.

“The condition of your skin, the increased amount of energy that you have, if you’re not replacing the alcohol with candy or sweets—because you may start to crave those a little more if you stop drinking—you’ll definitely experience weight loss,” Berki said.

One group should not take part, Berki cautioned. Those are heavy drinkers, who should talk with their doctors first because withdrawal symptoms can be uncomfortable and possibly deadly.

For those who are not , Berki suggested this time could be a good opportunity to reflect on drinking habits and write down goals.

When not giving up drinking, men should consume no more than two drinks and women should only have one on days when alcohol is consumed, according to government dietary guidelines for Americans.

Be sure to have and avoid temptations, Berki added in a clinic news release.

“The number one thing to do is if they’re trying to do a dry January and they truly don’t want to drink, the best thing to do is to avoid the situations, so if at all possible not hang out in bars, or nightclubs, or go to parties where there is going to be heavy alcohol use,” he advised.

Seahawks Fans Rejoice as Aaron Rodgers, Packers’ Playoff Hopes Crushed by Goff, Lions

The Detroit Lions were already eliminated from playoff contention when they took the field for their Sunday Night Football matchup against the Green Bay Packers, but they reveled in the chance to ruin the postseason hopes of their NFC North rivals.

The Lions ended the season with a 20-16 win over the Packers at Lambeau Field, allowing the Seattle Seahawks to hold onto the seventh and final playoff spot in the NFC.

Sunday’s win was a gutsy effort by a team that didn’t have much to play for. Lions head coach Dan Campbell was aggressive in his play-calling, and a late, go-ahead touchdown by running back Jamaal Williams sealed the win for Detroit and broke Barry Sanders’ franchise record for rushing touchdowns in a season.

But the real winner of the night was the Seahawks, and many celebrated the team’s return to the playoffs on social media:

Let’s go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So the @Seahawks trade Russell Wilson, start @GenoSmith3 and turn a so-called rebuilding season into a playoff one…AND hold the 5th overall pick in the 2023 Draft.

Well done @PeteCarroll and congrats to the rest of the 12s.

Brady Henderson @BradyHenderson

The Seahawks are heading to the playoffs and will pick fifth overall in April. Per @ESPNStatsInfo, only 10 teams in the common draft era (since 1967) have picked in the top five after making the playoffs. It hasn’t happened since the Jets in 2003.

Nathan Brand @NathanBrandWA

Heck of a year for Seattle sports!

– Seahawks make playoffs, were only supposed to win 4 games

– Mariners make playoffs, @JRODshow44 wins ROY

– UW Football had a great year, finishing 12th in the AP & beat Texas in the Alamo Bowl

– Kraken are having a fantastic season so far https://t.co/HnlTWAbr0H

Jen Mueller @JenTalksSports

There are so many cool stories around this Seahawks team this year including Geno Smith being named to the Pro Bowl and leading the Hawks to the playoffs. The entire stadium chanted his name in Week 1 and Week 18. Couldn’t be happier for @GenoSmith3 and what he’s done this year

Maximiliano Bretos @MaxBretosSports

Seahawks trade Russell Wilson, get 2 first round picks, 2 2nd round, 3 players & still make playoffs. That’s good business.

Jimmy Durkin @Jimmy_Durkin

Mad respect to the Lions for this one.

Mitchell Schwartz @MitchSchwartz71

Dan Campbell ruining NBC’s dream of Rodgers driving down the field to tie or win the game

shannon sharpe @ShannonSharpe

Lions EARNED this victory. You get what you earn not what you deserve. Lions have a BRIGHT future. Happy for Dan Campbell. His methods are unorthodox, but it wrks.

Ari Meirov @MySportsUpdate

Dan Campbell really came in and said if we’re not in, you guys aren’t either.

And he wasn’t kidding. Lions sweep Green Bay.

The Seahawks were not expected to compete for a postseason berth after trading away longtime quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in the offseason. But led by Comeback Player of the Year candidate Geno Smith, Seattle was a pleasant surprise this season and proved to be able to compete against anybody.

When the postseason begins next week, the Seahawks will have the daunting task of facing the second-seeded San Francisco 49ers, who defeated them twice in the regular season.

Everything to know about the College Football Playoff Championship

A thrilling college football season will come to a close on Monday when No. 1 Georgia and No. 3 TCU meet in the College Football Playoff Championship.

It’s an intriguing matchup, a classic David-vs.-Goliath showdown.

On one hand, you have the defending national champs from Georgia, an SEC power and NFL talent factory that has only lost one game over the last two seasons. The Bulldogs are looking to become the first repeat champions since Alabama in 2011-12.

On the other hand, you have TCU, a small school by Power 5 standards out of the Big 12, a program that was thought so little of heading into the season that it was not only unranked but was picked to finish seventh in its own conference.

Here is everything to know about the College Football Playoff Championship Game.

MATCHUP

National Championship Game: No. 3 TCU vs. No. 1 Georgia
Where: SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, Calif.
When: Monday, 7:30 p.m. ET
Odds: Georgia by 12.5 (per FOX Bet, as of Wednesday evening ET)

HOW THEY GOT HERE

Georgia: The Bulldogs stayed unbeaten thanks to a fourth-quarter comeback and 42-41 victory over Ohio State in the Peach Bowl. Buckeyes kicker Noah Ruggles missed a potential game-winning 50-yard field goal in the final seconds.

You can read a complete breakdown of the game here.

TCU: The Horned Frogs out-bullied the Big Ten champs from Michigan with a wild, 51-45 victory in the Fiesta Bowl. Dylan Horton had four sacks and a forced fumble, and Bud Clark and Dee Winters each returned interceptions for touchdowns.

You can read a complete breakdown of the game here.

Can Max Duggan lead an upset of Georgia?

KEYS TO THE GAME

Bryan Fischer has a full breakdown of what to expect when either team has the ball, here.

When Georgia has the ball

The Bulldogs are unique in that they have two star tight ends.

Brock Bowers won the Mackey Award as the nation’s best tight end and leads the team in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns. He’s also scored three times on the ground and averages more than 13 yards per rush by using his athleticism and frame to look just as nimble as one of the team’s trio of top tailbacks.

Then there’s Darnell Washington at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds. Though he is questionable for the title game after suffering an injury against Ohio State, the big junior’s presence typically allows the team to line up in 12 (one back, two tight ends) or 22 (two backs, two tight ends) personnel far more than your typical program does in college football. Having Washington and Bowers in to block on running plays can create advantages and overloads that create daylight for Kenny McIntosh, Daijun Edwards or Kendall Milton to run through.

Those tight ends can also become weapons in the passing game, against either smaller defensive backs or slower linebackers. Toss in a quarterback in Stetson Bennett who thrives at identifying coverages and knowing where to place the ball, and there’s a reason why UGA has had a top-10 scoring offense the past two years.

“That’s the thing that’s unique about this team. Most of the time you play against a good team and there’s two or three guys you say, look, we’ve gotta really take this guy away,” said Dykes. “But Georgia has just so many good players and guys that are really exceptional talents. You can’t go into a game and just say, okay, look, we’re going to — if we take this guy away then they’re going to have problems. That’s not the case with their offense.”

When TCU has the ball

While Dykes is a firstgeneration Air Raid disciple, the Horned Frogs rank fourth in the country in scoring this season through remarkable balance, rushing for just over 204 yards per game while throwing for a tick under 270 each time out. Much of that is directly attributable not just to philosophy, but also because of the guy running the show in Heisman runner-up Max Duggan.

“He’s got great players to do it with. He understands defenses. I think he’s very smart. There’s no defense he’s going to see that he hasn’t seen before. You’re not tricking an experienced quarterback,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said of TCU’s veteran behind center. “They have a system to allow him to manage that and to get back to third downs where you’ve got a shot to convert them.”

As Ohio State showed, you can find some success against the Bulldogs with your passing attack, as their secondary is the weakest of the three levels under Smart this season. TCU often utilizes formations maximizing the entire width of the field and will need to continue to do so in the title game, with receivers lining up outside the numbers pulling defenders away from the box and out of their traditional lanes. Kent State found some success doing this earlier in the season, and there’s no reason to think the Horned Frogs can’t get something going and even bake it into their typically successful screen game, too.

At the same time, Dykes and Duggan will have to stay aggressive and pick good spots to take shots at big plays. They’ve been phenomenal at dialing things up for either long touchdowns or big chunk yardage and will need to keep that rolling if they want to have a shot at winning it all.

THE PICKS: WHO WINS THE GAME AND WHY?

We asked our staff to predict which team would win the big game. Below are some brief excerpts, but you can SEE ALL THE PREDICTIONS HERE.

“TCU will need more magic than UGA — like two pick-sixes — to pull off the biggest upset in the history of the College Football Playoff era.” — RJ Young

“For Georgia to become the first team to win back-to-back national championships since Alabama did it in 2011 and 2012, it will have to do the opposite of what Michigan did in the Fiesta Bowl. And that’s stop TCU’s run game.” — Laken Litman

“It feels like [TCU has] enough athleticism and will to move the ball on a Georgia defense that is arguably the best in college football thanks in part to the well-rounded game plans of offensive coordinator Garrett Riley.” — Michael Cohen

“TCU doesn’t have that look of being just happy to be here and legitimately has a shot, but it’s hard to overlook the experience Kirby Smart’s crew has in moments like this as they lock up back-to-back national titles and ensure their place in the history books.” — Bryan Fischer

The Popeyes meme kid is a college football player now and he needs an NIL deal IMMEDIATELY

Are you ready to feel old?

Or, at least older than you already do?

In 2013, a video went viral on Vine — and yes thinking of the now-defunct Vine might be enough to make you feel old — of a young boy in line at a Popeye’s, reacting with some side-eye as a stranger filmed him in line. You have probably seen the video thousands of times, if not more, as it lives on as a meme as well as a reaction gif on all corners of the internet.

Well, the young man in question is a bit older now.

And he just finished his freshman year of college football.

Dieunerst Collin is that young man, he put together an impressive resume during his high school playing days. Collin was a First Team All-Conference, All-County, and All-Division selection in just his one year as a letter-winner. He also participated on East Orange High School’s track and field team. After winning a New Jersey state championship back in 2021 with, Collin enrolled at Lake Erie College, a Division II program.

Now that he is in college, something else should follow.

An NIL deal from Popeyes:

After all, Collin brought a lot of attention to Popeyes over the years, and it is the least the restaurant chain can do for him.

For his part, Collin is ready to talk business:

Popeyes, it is time to do right by Collin.

Perhaps Collin’s time in college will set him on a path to NFL stardom. But if not, he certainly seems to have a life planned for his post-football days. According to his bio on the Lake Erie website, Collin is majoring in Sports Management, with a minor in Comedian Studies.

He is also pursuing a career as a sports analyst.

So before we hire him at SB Nation after he graduates, it is time for Popeyes to do the right thing.

Gronowski was nearly as effective through the air, finishing 14-of-21 for 223 yards and three scores.

The defense came to play as well, forcing three turnovers, including two interceptions of Bison quarterback Cam Miller.

By the time South Dakota State took a 28-7 lead in the second quarter, it seemed like a Jackrabbits title was inevitable.

Suffice to say, it was a therapeutic day for a South Dakota State program that had watched its neighbor dominate FCS football for such a long time:

Chris Vannini @ChrisVannini

What a moment for South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits beat rival NDSU 45-21 for their first FCS title.

I was there a few years ago when Sam Houston beat SDSU for the title in the final seconds. Now SDSU takes down their goliath rival for the second time this season. Iconic.

South Dakota State is letting out some DEMONS today against North Dakota State. John Stiegelmeier is 33 minutes away from his first national championship after 35 years with the program, including 26 as head coach.

South Dakota State is letting out years of frustration on North Dakota State. What a beat down.

Tbh can’t imagine happier football fans than South Dakota State’s today. Like if both Clemson’s championship wins over Bama were combined, and Clemson had been Auburn

Don’t let Week 18 of the NFL season distract you from what South Dakota State is doing to North Dakota State. #FCSPlayoffs #FCSChampionship

Parker Thune @ParkerThune

What the streets don’t know is that I was about 48 hours from enrolling at South Dakota State back in the day. The Jackrabbits will always have a special place in my heart.

Heck of a job by John Stiegelmeier and that squad to get the monkey off their back for good. #GoJacks ????

FINAL: #SDSU 45, #NDSU 21

South Dakota State wins the program’s first FCS National Championship. This is North Dakota State’s first ever loss in a #FCSChampionship game.

The Bison end the year 12-3.

It was a huge moment for a school that had come so close in 2020, only to lose to Sam Houston State 23-21 in the title game.

Losing championship games isn’t something North Dakota State is familiar with in the slightest, meanwhile—the school was 9-0 in such games before Sunday.

South Dakota State will be hoping it has entered its own era of dominance after dethroning the Bison.
