‘I Gave Up the Least Amount of Touchdowns’ — Super Bowl Champion Makes His Case for Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction

Now that the Pro Football Hall of Fame has inducted its 2026 class, a new batch of players has become eligible for the Class of 2027. The biggest names of this year’s first-year players who are now eligible for next year’s class include Rob Gronkowski, Adrian Peterson, Ben Roethlisberger, and Richard Sherman.

Recently, Sherman opened up about his chances of getting a bronze bust in Canton.

Appearing on Wednesday’s edition of “The Pat McAfee Show,” Sherman made a pretty strong case for why he deserves to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“I led the decade in interceptions,” Sherman said. “I think that’s a big factor when you’re playing. I gave up the least amount of touchdowns. I think that’s a factor when you’re playing. I think I gave up 17 in a career.”

“I think it was me and (Darrelle) Revis who were tied for the least amount of completion percentage. I think we gave right around 49%. During the football time when you played, were you the best in the game? And I was. You hope that they feel that same way.”

The 38-year-old veteran established himself as one of his era’s few lockdown cornerbacks, playing with a level of physicality and ball-hawking ability rarely seen from a fifth-round draft pick.

“You hope that guys you played, Julio Jones, we played against Larry (Fitzgerald Jr.) a couple of times a year,” Sherman added.

“Megatron, all these great players, Antonio Brown, Odell (Beckham Jr.), A.J. Green, Dez Bryant, fantastic players. And you win more matchups than you lose. You hope that factors in.”

Adding to his case, Sherman also noted that he played a key role on three Super Bowl teams, two in Seattle and another in San Francisco late in his career. He believes voters should also consider the quality of the teams he performed at a high level for.

“Then, the quality of your team,” Sherman argued. “I was able to go to two Super Bowls in Seattle, and I was a First-Team All-Pro on both Super Bowl teams and then left and went to San Francisco and was an All-Pro on that Super Bowl team.”

“It was the No. 1 pass defense in the league, after not being the No. 1 pass defense in the past couple of years. So, sometimes you just hope the numbers speak.”

McAfee joked that if Bill Belichick wasn’t a first-ballot Hall of Famer, Sherman shouldn’t expect to be one either. Many once considered the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach a lock, but he did not make it on his first ballot.

So, who knows what’s in store for Sherman, but he does appear to have a pretty strong case. Yet, the other stars who are eligible for the first time likely feel the same way.
