Football Halftime stats aren’t pretty for OU football vs Michigan

Jeff Patterson

12:58 pm CT September 12, 2026

Football Bryce Underwood outplaying John Mateer so far as Michigan leads OU 10-0

Jenni Carlson

The better quarterback seemed obvious before this game began.

It still seems obvious — except for who it is.

Bryce Underwood has clearly been the better quarterback in this game, and it hasn’t been particularly close. He has thrown for 96 yards on 7-of-13 passing and has rushed for 52 yards on seven attempts. He has Michigan’s touchdown, a 38-yard cutback in the first quarter.

Underwood hasn’t been otherworldly, but in a game with a couple of really good defenses, he hasn’t made any fatal errors and is moving his offense.

And the Michigan quarterback was thought to be the inferior quarterback in this matchup.

Instead, it’s John Mateer who’s on the struggle bus. After an efficient performance a week ago, the OU quarterback has looked off almost all day. He is 7 of 16 for 52 yards and a quarterback rating of 71.1.

His rushing stats aren’t much better: 21 yards on seven carries.

Some of the blame has to go to Sooner offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle for going with the passing game when the run game was picking up nice chunks on every attempt, then going with the run late in the half when it seemed like the pass would be the better option.

Not Arbuckle’s best day.

And that has led to one of Mateer’s worst days as a Sooner, too.

They have a half to flip the script.

Football HALF: Michigan 10, Oklahoma 0 | Sooners offense stymied

Colton Sulley

OU’s offense was completely shut down by the Wolverines’ defense in the first half.

The Sooners finished the half with only 115 yards compared to Michigan’s 188.

Quarterback John Mateer struggled, completing only 7 of his 16 pass attempts for 52 yards.

Football 0:12 left in second quarter: Michigan 10, Oklahoma 0 | John Mateer under pressure

Football 2:28 left in second quarter: Michigan 10, Oklahoma 0 | Wolverines extend lead with field goal

Jenni Carlson

The Michigan got good field position after OU was forced to punt from its own end zone, but after the Wolverines moved the ball well, they stalled and settled for a 40-yard field goal.

A holding penalty on first down from the OU 18-yard line was a drive killer. Michigan only managed 6 yards on its next three plays and was forced to kick for three.

12:25 pm CT September 12, 2026

Football 7:48 left in second quarter: Michigan 7, Oklahoma 0 | Sooners punt for third time

Colton Sulley

Nothing doing for OU offensively.

The Sooners took over on their own 1 and gained only three yards before punting yet again.

Quarterback John Mateer is 5 of 13 passing. OU has abandoned its run game for the most part despite averaging 4.5 yards per carry.

12:19 pm CT September 12, 2026

Football 8:40 left in second quarter: Michigan 7, Oklahoma 0 | Wolverines punt after near turnover

Jeff Patterson

The Wolverines put the ball on the ground twice during the drive, including on a third-and-8 pitch that was nearly recovered by OU’s Taylor Heinecke.

After a punt, the Sooners take over at their 1-yard line.

12:11 pm CT September 12, 2026

Football 13:22 left in second quarter: Michigan 7, Oklahoma 0 | Promising Sooner drive ends with turnover

Jenni Carlson

The OU offense was moving the ball well, picking up first downs after passes of 11 and 16 yards, then a Lloyd Avant run of 11 yards. But after a near fumble when John Mateer’s arm was hurt — referees ruled it an incomplete forward pass — Parker Livingstone fumbled at the end of what would’ve been another big gainer. The receiver had the ball punched out just before his knee hit the turf.

Defense returns after giving up a touchdown the last time Michigan had the ball.

Colton Sulley

The Sooners’ offense struggled mightily in the first quarter, netting only 49 total yards. Quarterback John Mateer has completed only 3 of 8 passes for 18 yards.

Meanwhile, Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood has looked comfortable and out Michigan on the board after a 38-yard touchdown run.

It appears OU will be without star linebacker Kip Lewis for the rest of the game as he headed to the locker room after trying to give it a go with a right knee injury.

The Sooners’ offense will begin the second quarter on their own 38 with a second-and-8.

Football Kip Lewis injury update: Oklahoma LB hops off, James Nesta in

Colton Sulley

Oklahoma linebacker Kip Lewis is hurt.

Following a 15-yard rush by Michigan’s Andrew Marsh for a first down, Lewis hobbled off the field, slamming his helmet on the field and taking a seat.

Lewis didn’t put any weight on his right leg and appeared to grab his knee.

James Nesta is in for Lewis.

Lewis is warming on a stationary bike on the OU sideline after testing his knee out with athletic trainers. He is wearing a brace on his right knee.

Football 12:31 left in first quarter: Oklahoma 0, Michigan 0 | Sooners forced to punt

The Wolverines closed the pocket fast on third down. With nowhere for OU quarterback John Mateer to go, he was sacked by John Henry Daley and the Sooners were forced to punt.

OU’s offense picked up one first down after an eight-yard Lloyd Avant run and a seven-yard reception by tight end Rocky Beers.

Football Michigan football scouting report for Week 2 vs. Oklahoma

Colton Sulley

Record: 1-0

Best player: Utah transfer defensive end John Henry Daley recorded only three tackles against Western Michigan but he was an All-American under new Wolverines coach Kyle Whittingham with the Utes last season. In 2025 as a Chuck Bednarik Award semifinalist, he totaled 48 tackles, 17.5 for loss, two forced fumbles and one pass breakup.

The case for Michigan: The controversial ending was just what the Wolverines needed to get themselves in gear. Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood plays a lot better and Mateer makes mistakes.

The case for OU: If Michigan plays like it did Saturday, this game could get ugly in a hurry. Sooners coach Brent Venables threw everything under the sun at Underwood last season and you have to imagine it’ll be a struggle for the young quarterback again. OU also brings more versatility into the matchup with its new-look offense and what seems to be an improved run game.
