Week 1 college football games are often buried beneath an avalanche of mismatches, but the opening weekend still offers a few reasons to guard the remote. These three games bring playoff consequences, uncomfortable pressure and just enough uncertainty to make Labor Day weekend worthwhile.

Clemson at LSU could change two seasons immediately

Clemson and LSU wasted no time getting to the serious part of the schedule. Their Saturday night meeting in Baton Rouge is the best game of Week 1, and it may not be particularly close.

LSU enters the season ranked No. 11 after hiring Lane Kiffin to revive a program that finished 7-6 last year. Hosting Clemson gives him a chance to prove the excitement surrounding his arrival is based on more than a famous last name and an active social media account.

Clemson has nearly as much riding on the opener. The Tigers fell outside the preseason AP Top 25 following a disappointing season, leaving Dabo Swinney with far less patience from the fan base than he once enjoyed.

A road victory would immediately change the conversation. A lopsided loss could make September rather unpleasant. The game begins Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. ESPN’s “College GameDay” will also visit Baton Rouge for its 500th road show.

Louisville and Ole Miss bring playoff stakes to Nashville

Ole Miss came painfully close to playing for a national championship last season. Now, the ninth-ranked Rebels must open against a Louisville team capable of wrecking their return trip before it gets started.

The Cardinals finished 9-4 last season and enter 2026 as a legitimate ACC contender. They may not carry the same national reputation as Ole Miss, but Jeff Brohm has built an offense that can make a favorite sweat.

Neither team receives much time to recover from a loss. Ole Miss begins conference play against LSU two weeks later, while Louisville faces SMU before September ends.

This is also the most evenly matched of the three must-watch Week 1 college football games. The neutral-site setting should prevent either side from enjoying a significant environmental advantage, although playing an SEC team in Nashville is not exactly a trip to Switzerland. Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Notre Dame cannot overlook Wisconsin at Lambeau Field

Notre Dame is expected to win comfortably. That does not make its Sunday night meeting with Wisconsin disposable.

The fourth-ranked Fighting Irish enter the season with championship expectations. Anything short of a convincing performance against an unranked Wisconsin team will invite immediate questions about whether those expectations were excessive.

Wisconsin, meanwhile, has little to lose. The Badgers added more than 40 players during an offseason overhaul and can play without the burden of being expected to compete with Notre Dame. Strange things happen when a reconstructed roster gets one game to introduce itself.

Lambeau Field supplies the intrigue that the point spread lacks. Wisconsin will have the crowd, Notre Dame will bring the pressure and both programs will receive a national stage with no NFL games available to steal it. The game begins Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
