Lahore traffic authorities have taken a tough step against air pollution. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi announced that drivers of smoke-emitting vehicles will now have their driving licences suspended.
Commercial vehicles that break emission rules may also lose their route permits. The decision is part of a zero-tolerance campaign to reduce smog and protect public health in the city.
Special enforcement teams are already working across Lahore. Police have set up teams at 12 entry and exit points. Another 45 teams are checking vehicles inside the city. This month alone, action was taken against more than 3,600 smoke-emitting vehicles and over 2,000 vehicles causing other pollution. Authorities also acted against thousands of unfit or poorly maintained vehicles.
The traffic police are using an artificial intelligence system to detect smoke-emitting vehicles and issue electronic challans. Tractor-trolleys and dumpers carrying sand or soil without proper covers remain banned from entering the city.
CTO Shirazi said these strict measures are necessary to improve air quality and keep roads safer. The campaign follows earlier anti-smog efforts ordered by the Punjab government. Officials stress that poorly maintained vehicles are a major cause of pollution and health problems.
Drivers are advised to keep their vehicles in good condition and follow all emission rules to avoid penalties.
