The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, has warned that businesses found violating environmental sanitation regulations could be closed and prosecuted.

During an inspection of the city centre, he expressed concern over what he described as the poor sanitation culture of some business owners and operators.

Udo said several businesses had failed to keep their premises and surrounding areas clean despite repeated sensitisation by the council.
He directed business operators to clean their premises and immediate surroundings regularly, including removing silt and refuse from drainage channels.
The chairman said Environmental Health Officers and other council officials would begin routine monitoring and enforcement across the area.
He warned that any business found violating environmental sanitation regulations would be closed until it complied with the requirements.
Udo added that defaulting operators could also face prosecution and other penalties provided under existing laws.
He called on residents and business owners to support the council’s sanitation efforts by keeping their surroundings clean at all times.
According to him, maintaining environmental cleanliness is both a civic responsibility and a legal obligation.
The chairman, accompanied by members of the council’s management team, also supervised the desilting of drainage channels along Clement Isong Avenue, also known as Ring Road 3.
The inspection followed a cleanup exercise carried out at the Uyo Local Government Council Secretariat.
