Mike Tomlin Made His Broadcasting Debut. How Did He Do?

Call him analyst Mike Tomlin, not head coach. Making his Football Night in America debut Thursday evening for NBC, Tomlin looked like a promising first-round rookie. He had some nerves and had to navigate all that’s new, but he has the potential to be excellent in the role. Tomlin joined Maria Taylor, Jason Garrett, and Jason McCourty on-scene for the Hall of Fame Game between the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals.

Aside from a brief appearance in the spring, this was Tomlin’s first on-desk work after accepting the job earlier this offseason.

Tomlin received the immediate introduction from Taylor.

“I don’t miss the dorm room in Latrobe, PA where I spent a calendar year of my life,” Tomlin said with a smile in his opening remarks. “But I do miss men, the brotherhood, the camaraderie, the fighting together. But I gotta admit, I’m also enjoying the camaraderie I’m developing with this group.”

The broadcast noted Tomlin’s first game as the Steelers’ head coach was at the same venue during the 2007 Hall of Fame Game. Pittsburgh came out on top 20-7 against the New Orleans Saints, who rostered QB Drew Brees, part of the Hall’s 2026 class.

Tomlin scored the first interview of the night with a prerecorded walk ‘n’ talk with Panthers quarterback Bryce Young. Tomlin felt a little out of his element and struggled to transition between Young’s answer and the next topic. It felt a little stiff and formal for someone who connects well with players. But the environment of focusing on his blocking, pacing, and questions added challenge.

Tomlin was at his best sharing personal stories. Watching highlights of WR Larry Fitzgerald, also part of this year’s Hall of Fame class, who nearly beat his Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII, he remarked he was happy to have a “little time and Santonio Holmes” to prevent Arizona from hoisting the Lombardi.

In a pre-recorded segment shared to YouTube and later shown on the broadcast, Tomlin shared great memories of his time together with Ronde Barber, Tony Dungy, and Derrick Brooks as the FNIA crew toured the Hall’s busts.

Tomlin offered insight into DL Aaron Donald’s possible-to-likely return to the Los Angeles Rams, pointing out the impact Donald can have beyond the box score. He noted Donald’s presence could make a big impact and free up his teammates.

Tomlin showed Pittsburgh plenty of love. He banged the table for WR Hines Ward to make the Hall of Fame and endorsed Mike McCarthy as the Steelers’ new hire.

Later, Tomlin and Taylor interviewed Fitzgerald at the desk. Tomlin and Fitzgerald connected over Larry’s father, Larry Sr., who Tomlin got to know during his one-year stint with the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. Larry Sr. was a sportswriter for the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder.

Tomlin ended the pregame show praising the NFC West as the league’s best conference. He compared it to “Game of Thrones” for its tough outs in the Seattle Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams, and San Francisco 49ers.

Rarely on social media while with Pittsburgh, Tomlin sent out several tweets during the broadcast, including one expressing his excitement about joining the team.

Tomlin had a solid debut overall. He’ll have more commentary during halftime and postgame. Once the regular season begins, he will be a staple of the broadcast each Sunday night, where he’ll likely settle into his role and feel even more at home.
