Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare has completed a season-long loan move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Ajax, with the Dutch giants holding an option to make the transfer permanent next summer, Soccernet.ng reports.
On the surface, Wolves’ announcement looked like a routine transfer confirmation. But for those who have followed Arokodare’s turbulent final weeks at Molineux, the wording revealed far more than a simple goodbye.
Rather than wishing the Nigerian striker well or thanking him for his contributions, Wolves’ statement subtly highlighted his struggles, reinforcing the impression that the Championship club already consider his departure permanent.

1. Wolves highlighted his struggles
Clubs often use farewell statements to thank departing players, acknowledge memorable moments or wish them success in the next chapter of their careers. Wolves did none of that.
Instead, they immediately drew attention to Arokodare’s modest return.
“The 25-year-old joined the club last September from Genk, before playing 38 times and scoring six goals in old gold. Three of those strikes were in the Premier League.”
While those numbers are factually correct, they also reinforce the narrative that the Nigerian failed to justify the investment made after arriving from Genk.
Given the strained relationship between player and club in recent weeks, the statistics read less like appreciation and more like a reminder of why Wolves were prepared to let him leave.
2. The statement emphasised how little he played towards the end of last season
Perhaps the strongest clue came in the next paragraph.
“Although he featured on the final day of last season, the Nigerian international started just one of the club’s last ten fixtures.”
There was no footballing reason to include that sentence in a standard loan announcement.
Instead, it underlined what had already become obvious during the closing months of the campaign: Arokodare had fallen completely out of favour.
Earlier this summer, the Super Eagles striker had requested to leave following Wolves’ relegation, while tensions escalated after he was prevented from training with the first team as both sides pushed for a transfer.
By highlighting his lack of starts, Wolves appeared to reinforce the message that he was no longer part of their plans.
3. The purchase option tells the bigger story
“Ajax hold an option to sign the striker permanently next summer.”
That clause aligns with Wolves’ transfer strategy throughout the summer.
The Championship side rejected several permanent offers below their asking fee because they wanted a structure that could eventually recover a significant portion of the fee they paid Genk less than a year ago.
Ajax’s agreement achieves exactly what they hoped for. If Arokodare rediscovers the form that saw him win the Belgian Golden Boot before moving to England, the Dutch giants can activate the option, and Wolves can finally close a chapter that became uncomfortable for both parties.
Considering the deteriorating relationship, his exclusion from first-team plans, and the carefully worded club statement, it is difficult to imagine the Nigerian striker returning to Molineux even if the option is not activated.

For Arokodare, the move is an opportunity to rebuild his reputation at one of Europe’s most prestigious development clubs.
For Wolves, however, the tone of their announcement suggests this is less a temporary loan and more the beginning of a permanent separation.
Officially, the deal remains a season-long loan. Unofficially, everything about Wolves’ statement points towards a clean break.
