The Saskatoon Police Service’s economic crime section confirmed the vehicle’s presence in the West African country after it had travelled from Saskatoon to British Columbia and then overseas, thanks to a man who allegedly came from Alberta and used a fraudulent Quebec driver’s license.

The inter-provincial turned international investigation began on Jan. 14, 2025, when Saskatoon police were notified of a vehicle theft and fraud of over $5,000 from a business in the 2300 block of Faithfull Avenue.

That’s where a man from Alberta reportedly bought a Land Rover under a false identity, police said in a news release this week.

Subsequently, on Feb. 3, 2025, Saskatoon police were told of another fraudulently-purchased vehicle from a business just down the block, in the 3100 block of Faithfull Avenue.

Police said a man, allegedly from Alberta but carrying a Quebec driver’s license, bought a BMW X5. Afterward, the business was informed of the buyer’s fraudulent activity, and investigators learned the suspect’s driver’s license had been altered.

A 21-year-old man was arrested in Edmonton where local police, alongside the Canada Border Services Agency, helped Saskatoon police locate the Land Rover in Ghana.

He’s charged with fraud over $5,000, theft of a motor vehicle, fraudulent impersonation, possession of an identity document belonging to another person, using a forged document, and breaching court-imposed conditions.

Saskatoon police confirmed that the charges only pertain to the February 2025 incident. Edmonton police have laid charges in connection with the January 2025 incident.
