Scaloni hits back at Argentina critics who ‘don’t know us’

Lionel Scaloni defended Argentina’s “warriors” following their World Cup heartbreak from critics who “don’t know us”.

Argentina reached the final at the 2026 edition but were unable to defend their title as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in extra time, following Enzo Fernandez’s sending-off.

The Albiceleste managed just two off-target shots in the showpiece, with their first not coming until the 117th minute through Lionel Messi.

They accumulated just 0.2 expected goals (xG), while Spain dominated as they registered 2.3 xG at the other end from 20 shots, 12 of which were on target.

The final was marred by ugly scenes after the final whistle, with Argentina’s players and coaches clashing with their opposition on the pitch – FIFA are investigating those involved.

Scaloni, however, has defended his players in the wake of their runner-up finish, praising the passion and intensity they showed throughout the tournament.

“After an intense week in which sadness has intertwined with joy, tears with smiles, anxiety with tranquillity, and nerves with calm, I can sit down to write a few words,” Scaloni wrote on Instagram.

“All I can say is I’m sorry for not being able to bring you another cup and give you a new source of joy which, even if only for a few days, might help you forget all the ugliness in life.

“But I want you to take away what we’ve tried to show you through this group of players, my warriors – as I used to describe them when I spoke to my wife about them.

“The effort, the drive, the passion, the ‘I can do it’ attitude, the refusal to give up (even when the going gets tough), giving it your all (even when you’ve got nothing left), putting up with buckets of cold water (FROM PEOPLE WHO DON’T KNOW US), keeping your composure, wanting to stay on your feet when your legs no longer obey your brain… That is the real trophy.

“I am eternally grateful to my coaching staff, the players, the AFA staff – those who work quietly behind the scenes to ensure we’re comfortable – and to each and every one of you for the affection you’ve shown.”

Scaloni’s future as Argentina head coach is currently in doubt following the World Cup.

His current contract runs through to December, but Scaloni has said he will take time to think about his future, hinting he might choose not to renew his deal.
