Champions, Benfica: How Ucheibe surpassed Yekini, Amunike to become Nigeria’s greatest export to Portugal

Soccer

Christy Ucheibe has written her name into football history once again after helping SL Benfica win the 2025–26 Campeonato Nacional Feminino title, Soccernet.ng reports.

Benfica sealed the title in style, beating SC Braga 3-1 on Sunday to confirm their sixth straight league crown, a historic ‘Hexacampeonato.’ Even more impressive, they did it unbeaten, winning 13 matches and drawing three from 16 games, with two matches still left to play.

It was another dominant campaign for Benfica, with 54 goals scored and only 10 conceded, finishing with both the best attack and the strongest defence in the league.

This title triumph also confirms Benfica’s status as the dominant force in Portuguese women’s football. Since reaching the top division in 2019, they have won every league title available, with only the COVID-19 disrupted 2019–20 season stopping a perfect run.

Soccer Ucheibe: The midfield general behind Benfica’s dominance

Ucheibe’s role in this success cannot be overstated. The Super Falcons star, often deployed as a centre-back, featured in 10 league matches and contributed an assist to the cause. She added another five appearances in the Champions League and played two games in domestic cups.

Sometimes fielded as a defensive midfielder, she acts as the team’s shield. Her job was simple but crucial: stop attacks before they become dangerous. Week after week, she broke up opposition moves with strong tackles, smart positioning, and tireless running.

But she is more than just a tackler and a ball-winner. Ucheibe is also the starting point for Benfica’s attacks. With a passing accuracy often above 80%, she keeps the ball moving and helps her team control games. When opponents press high, she stays calm, picks the right pass, and turns defence into attack in seconds.

Her tactical intelligence also makes her special. At times, she drops into defence and plays as a centre-back, allowing Benfica to change shape without making substitutions. This flexibility has been key in big matches, especially in Europe. And when it matters most, she steps up.

This latest title is her sixth straight league win since joining the club in February 2020 from Swedish side ASSi IF. Alongside that, she has helped Benfica win multiple domestic cups, building a trophy collection that no Nigerian player in Portugal has ever matched.

Soccer Nigeria’s past heroes in Portugal before Ucheibe’s rise

Before Ucheibe’s arrival in Portugal, Nigeria had produced several stars who made strong impacts in that European country, but none reached this level of sustained success.

Goalscorer extraordinaire Rashidi Yekini remains one of the most iconic. Playing for Vitória de Setúbal, he won the Golden Boot in the 1993-94 season, scoring 21 goals. However, the former Africa Footballer of the Year played for a mid-table club at the time and team trophies eluded him.

Another Africa best, Emmanuel Amunike enjoyed success with Sporting CP, winning the Portuguese Cup and Super Cup in the mid-1990s. He was a big-game player, famously scoring in key matches, but his time in Portugal brought only two major trophies.

More recently, Zaidu Sanusi has impressed at FC Porto, winning a league title, two Portuguese Cups, and two Super Cups. The Super Eagles fullback’s achievements are significant, but still fall short of Ucheibe’s incredible consistency.

Soccer From promising talent to Portugal’s most decorated Nigerian

Talent has set Ucheibe apart and so has consistency over time with a club aiming for lofty targets.

Since arriving in Lisbon in 2020, she has grown from a promising young midfielder into a leader. She is now one of the first names on the team sheet and a key voice in the dressing room.

Her impact also goes beyond Portugal. In the 2023–24 season, she helped Benfica reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, the first Portuguese women’s team to achieve that feat. That run showed she could perform not just locally, but on the biggest stage in Europe.

Even though Benfica found the 2025–26 European campaign more difficult, their domestic dominance guarantees another shot at Europe next season.

Soccer Why Ucheibe stands alone

When you compare achievements, the gap becomes clear.

Six consecutive league titles. Multiple cup victories. Key roles in every success. Consistent performances in domestic and European competitions.

No Nigerian player, male or female, has matched that level of sustained dominance in Portugal.

While legends like Yekini and Amunike brought moments of brilliance and cultural impact, Ucheibe has built a dynasty. The 25-year-old is not just part of Benfica’s success, she is one of its foundations.

And with more years ahead of her, the story is still being written.
