Report: UFL Coach Arrested in Texas for DWI

According to multiple sources, former NFL wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr., who was serving as head coach of the UFL’s Columbus Aviators, had been arrested in the Dallas–Fort Worth area on charges related to driving while intoxicated (DWI). The incident happened today, a day before a scheduled league game, creating sudden uncertainty around the team’s leadership and preparation.

Ted Ginn Jr. has posted a $1000 bond and has since been released.

According to early reports, Ginn Jr. was taken into custody following a traffic stop, though specific details surrounding the circumstances of the arrest, such as blood alcohol level or whether any additional charges were filed, have not been fully disclosed. The timing of the incident proved particularly disruptive, as the Aviators were in the final stages of game-week preparations.

In response, the organization acted quickly to stabilize the situation, naming veteran coach Todd Haley as interim head coach, according to James Larson. Haley, who brings decades of professional coaching experience, seems to be tasked with stepping in on short notice to lead the team through the immediate aftermath and upcoming matchup.

The UFL has not publicly commented in depth on any potential disciplinary action, stating only that it is aware of the situation and gathering information. It remains unclear whether Ginn Jr. will face league-imposed penalties or how long he may be away from the team.

UFL releases a statement:

This is not the first time Ginn Jr.’s name has appeared in connection with an arrest-related situation, though under very different circumstances. In 2009, while he was an active NFL player, Ginn was present during an incident in which his former teammate Donte Whitner was arrested at a nightclub. Ginn himself was not charged or accused of wrongdoing in that case.

Ginn Jr., known during his playing career for his speed and special teams impact, transitioned into coaching following his retirement from professional football. His appointment as head coach of the Columbus Aviators marked a significant step in his post-playing career, making the recent developments particularly notable for both the team and the league.

As the situation continues to unfold, the Aviators and the UFL face questions about leadership continuity and accountability, while awaiting further legal and organizational updates regarding Ginn Jr.’s status.
