Don’t Starve is back for more darkly whimsical co-op survival in Don’t Starve Elsewhere, and this time there’s hills!

Klei Entertainment has unveiled a brand-new multiplayer instalment of its gloomily amusing survival series, Don’t Starve. As revealed during the latest Triple-i Initiative Showcase, it’s called Don’t Starve Elsewhere and it promises adventure in a “strange and unforgiving new world filled with magic, monsters and mystery” as players take on their greatest opponent yet: hills.

The original Don’t Starve, with its appealingly gloomy spin on roguelike survival (its vibe was part Edward Gorey, part Tim Burton) launched back in 2013, and was followed by co-op focused Don’t Starve Together in 2016. And finally, a decade later, a third entry has been confirmed.

Details are still fairly limited at this early juncture, but Klei is promising – alongside the series’ familiar survival core, which once again incorporates co-op – new biomes with their own distinct climates. There’s talk of a redwood forest blighted by relentless rainstorms, as well as chilly, snow-covered peaks. Which brings up to Elsewhere’s big departure: the insistently flat planes of old now giving way to a “multi-tiered wilderness.”

The perilous world is again procedurally generated, but now features more literal ups and downs. As well as those mountain peaks, Klei says players can expect to “swim across rushing rivers and tumultuous seas, and spelunk deep into winding cave systems” as their quest for survival continues. Of course, there’s the usual crafting, resource gathering, and building too, but players also need to keep an eye on the cursed Fog drifting across the landscape. “Will you run from it, teases Klei, “or risk your sanity to explore its secrets?”

There’s no hint of a release date for Don’t Starve Elsewhere just yet (or even word of platforms beyond Steam), but hopefully Klei will be ready to share some of its darker mysteries soon.
