Brother stabbed in village row: Court orders arrest after brutal family fight in Hungary

A man has been placed under arrest after allegedly stabbing his own brother in the chest during a violent altercation in the small village of Vilmány, in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County.

According to a statement released on Friday, the Miskolci Törvényszék confirmed that the Miskolci Járásbíróság has ordered the suspect’s detention for one month. The information was shared with the Hungarian news agency MTI.

Argument escalated into assault

The two brothers had reportedly been drinking together last Saturday when an argument broke out between them. The disagreement quickly escalated into a physical fight.

During the struggle, the suspect allegedly stabbed his brother in the chest and then kicked him twice in the head. The victim lost consciousness as a result of the attack.

Despite the severity of the injuries, the suspect did not call for help immediately. Assistance was only requested around a day and a half later, significantly delaying medical intervention.

If you missed it:

Attempted homicide suspected

The court justified the pre-trial detention by stating that the act may qualify as attempted homicide. If proven, the offence could carry a particularly severe sentence.

Judges argued that the prospect of a heavy punishment raises concerns that the suspect might flee or go into hiding if released. In addition, based on his personal circumstances and lifestyle, authorities believe he may pose a danger to those around him.

For these reasons, the court also cited the risk of reoffending as grounds for keeping him in custody while the investigation continues.

The case remains under criminal proceedings.
