March is here, and streaming services are readying a bevy of new, high-profile sc-fi and fantasy shows for us all to enjoy. This month is packed with great stuff to watch, whether you’re into historical epics, alternate universes, superheroes, anime, and more. Check out our guide to the month below.

Sean Kaufman in For All Mankind season 5

The best sci-fi show on TV is coming back. Here’s what you need to know about season 5:

For All Mankind has quietly become the best, most consistent sci-fi show on TV. Let’s prepare for season 5.

Outlander season 8

The final season is here

Outlander, adapted from the novels by Diana Gabaldon, started way back in 2014. The show tells the story of Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), a World War II-era nurse who finds herself transported back in time to 18th century Scotland, where she falls in love with dashing highlander Jaime Fraser (Sam Heughan).

The time travel element means that Outlander is technically a sci-fi/fantasy show, but the focus has always been on the romance and the characters. This new season will be the last, and will go beyond Gabaldon’s published books to finish out the story. This show is famous for having very passionate fans, and if there’s anybody out there who’s looking to see what the fuss is about, this is your last chance before it’s all over.

The eighth and final season of Outlander will premiere on Starz on March 6.

One Piece season 2

Into the Grand Line

The One Piece manga by Eiichiro Oda has been running continuously since 1997, and the anime series since only a couple years after that. This story of a plucky pirate crew traveling the world has since become one of the popular franchises in history, with lovable characters and dense worldbuilding to match anything else out there. In 2023, Netflix decided to finally adapt the story to live-action. Live-action anime remakes don’t have a great track record, but the first season of One Piece beat the odds and was received warmly by fans and newcomers alike.

That’s because the casting is great, the story is faithful, and you can tell the show is made with love. Hopefully that streak will continue when the second season drops on Netflix on March 10. The new episodes will follow Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his crew as they explore the dangerous Grand Line part of the ocean.

Invincible season 4

The Viltrumite War begins

Invincible, based on the comic series by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, is a brutal, sprawling tale about a teenager named Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) who discovers he has superpowers inherited from his superhero father (J.K. Simmons). Four seasons later, Mark has made friends with a one-eyed alien (Seth Rogen), been beaten up too many times to count, and is about to fight on the front lines in a war against a tyrannical extraterrestrial empire bent on universal domination.

The Invincible show cuts very little from the comic, which means there are always new plot threads, characters, and fight scenes to enjoy. The show is known for its graphic violence mixed with earnest sincerity, and as you can tell from some of the names above, the voice cast is stocked with top-tier talent.

Invincible season 4 starts airing March 18 on Prime Video.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure season 6

Steel Ball Run, don’t Steel Ball Walk to watch this new season

We have one more animated show for you: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is another anime that’s been running for a long time, since 2012. Each season stands alone, so you can hop in at any time without being lost.

The new season will cover the Steel Ball Run arc from the original manga, where paraplegic former jockey Johnny Joestar participates in a cross-country horse race while nursing hopes that he may be able to walk again. The show is famous for wildly creative fight scenes, strange character designs, and unpredictable plots. It’s well-named.

Like season 5, the new season of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure will stream on Netflix one episode at a time, this time starting on March 19.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2

Back so soon?

Daredevil: Born Again is a revival of the original Netflix Daredevil series that ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018, with Charlie Cox back in titular role of the blind superhero from Hell’s Kitchen. Vincent D’Onofrio also returns to play uncompromising crime kingpin Wilson Fisk.

The first season of Born Again was well-received, and with more creative freedom this time around, season 2 promises to be even better. It’s also coming back not even a year after season 1 ended, which is a nice change of pace at a time when high-end action shows like this tend to take a while to produce.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on March 24.

For All Mankind season 5

Mars rises

For All Mankind is the best sci-fi show that no one is watching. It’s about an alternate history of Earth where the United States and the Soviet Union never stopped running the space race. The first season started in the 1960s, when the world of For All Mankind hadn’t yet diverged that much from our own. But in the upcoming fifth season, set in the 2010s, not only has mankind built a permanent installation on Mars, but the people who run it are demanding independence from their overlords back on Earth. The first Martians have arrived!

The show has gotten more imaginative and interesting as it’s gone on, all while trying to make sure the science is as accurate as possible. For All Mankind is an underappreciated series that’s nonetheless been going strong for years. Perhaps season 5 will finally be the year when it breaks out.

The fifth season of For All Mankind premieres on Apple TV+ on March 27.

Also for your consideration

There are other sci-fi and fantasy shows to look out for this month. The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, another Apple TV+ series, technically premiered in late February, but it’ll be airing new episodes all through March. You may also want to keep an eye out for the horror drama Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which drops on Netflix on March 26. It’s hard to tell if it’s sci-fi or fantasy exactly, but it definitely looks surreal and spooky.

There are also some movies coming our way, including the Frankenstein riff The Bride! () and Project Hail Mary (), where Ryan Gosling plays an unwilling astronaut sent into deep space to investigate why the sun is dimming. March is chock-full of sci-fi/fantasy goodness, so eat up.
