Victor Osimhen endured a difficult night as Galatasaray’s Champions League journey came to an end after a heavy defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Turkish side came into the match with a small advantage after winning 1-0 in the first leg in Istanbul, where Osimhen had played a key role by assisting the winning goal. There was hope that the Nigerian striker would once again lead the attack and help his team progress.

However, things quickly went wrong.

Early in the game, Osimhen was hit from behind by Ibrahima Konaté. The challenge left him in pain, especially in his hand, and he needed treatment on the pitch. Although he continued playing, it was clear he was not fully comfortable.

Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk later explained the situation.

“Osimhen is in pain,” Buruk told Galatasaray website. “It happened at the beginning of the game; we tried to keep him on the pitch, but his pain increased, so we had to substitute him at halftime.

“Looking at Osimhen’s position, we saw that Konaté was able to commit these fouls very easily, he could easily apply any kind of foul. While we were expecting the best referee in the world, perhaps one of the worst referees officiated the game.”

Osimhen tried to keep going despite the pain. He showed determination and even had a small chance late in the first half, but his header went wide. It turned out to be his only real opportunity of the game.

By halftime, with Galatasaray already trailing, he was taken off because the pain had become too much.

Soccer Victor Osimhen’s exit changes the game as Liverpool take control

When Victor Osimhen did not return for the second half, the game changed completely.

Without their main striker, Galatasaray lost their attacking strength and confidence. Liverpool quickly took advantage and dominated the rest of the match.

Dominik Szoboszlai had already given Liverpool the lead before the break, and the pressure only increased after halftime. Hugo Ekitike added a second goal, while Ryan Gravenberch scored soon after to make it three.

Then Mohamed Salah sealed the win with a brilliant finish, his 50th goal in the Champions League.

Buruk admitted that Liverpool deserved the victory but pointed out that several factors made things harder for his team:

“But our opponent deserved to win the match much more than us. There were unfortunate events; our start to the game, Osimhen’s injury, our inability to make our presence felt during the game, and the confidence we gave to our opponent…

“They played with more confidence, while we lost ours. Our fans always expect a much more courageous Galatasaray, but none of our pre-match plans worked on the field. Injuries and the wrong decisions we made during the game had an impact.

“My players put in a great deal of effort, and I respect their efforts. You congratulated us, Galatasaray, and our club for being here; however, I am saddened by this defeat today.”

It was a frustrating night for Osimhen. He came into the game in strong form, with seven goals and three assists in the competition, but the early injury stopped him from making his usual impact.

In the end, Liverpool’s energy, speed, and confidence proved too much, especially after Galatasaray lost their key striker.

Galatasaray must now focus on their domestic season, while Liverpool move on in the competition after a powerful performance at Anfield.

In the quarterfinal, the Reds will trade tackles with PSG, who crushed Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate on Tuesday.
