2025: A year in images


HS2’s Colne Valley viaduct opened in September. At 3.3km, it is the longest of more than 50 viaducts being built for the high-speed rail megaproject.


The Grade II*-listed Tyne Bridge carries 70,000 vehicles daily, and with its 2028 centenary fast approaching, a major restoration by Esh is underway.


Sir Robert McAlpine’s new Museum of London complex, being built on the site of the former Smithfield Market, is notable for a new roof with portals in place at either end.


Manchester United FC announced plans in March to develop a new 100,000-seater  stadium, including a lightweight umbrella roof supported by three 200-metre-high masts.


Multiplex is building a new integrated London Underground ticket hall 33 metres below ground – and three towers up to 34 storeys high – at Elephant & Castle in South London.


In July, 13-year-old Finlay Gallagher became the UK’s youngest qualified digger driver after passing his Construction Plant Competence Scheme test.


The EKFB joint venture is building a pair of cut-and-cover tunnels with precast M-shaped arches for HS2 in Northamptonshire.
