Countries That Can Enter the US Without a Visa for 90 Days

Are you dreaming of a quick getaway to the United States without the long wait for visa at the embassy? If you’re from one of 43 specific countries, you may be in luck.

The United States allows citizens of certain nations to travel visa-free for up to 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), but there are some important rules you’ll need to follow.

What is the Visa Waiver Program?

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is a special agreement between the US and select countries that allows travelers to enter the US for tourism or business without needing a traditional visa.

Instead of going through a full visa application process, visitors from these countries can apply online through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

This system, run by US Customs and Border Protection, checks whether a traveler qualifies for visa-free entry. The ESTA must be approved before boarding your flight, and it’s crucial to remember that your stay in the US must not exceed 90 days.

Who Can Use the VWP?

Not everyone qualifies for visa-free entry even if you hold a passport from a VWP country. There are a few exceptions.

You won’t be eligible for ESTA if:

  • You have visited North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011.
  • You’ve been to Cuba on or after January 12, 2021.
  • You hold dual nationality with Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.

If any of these conditions apply, you’ll need to go the traditional route and apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa.

Which Countries Are Part of the VWP?

If you’re from one of the following countries, you may be eligible to travel to the US without a visa for up to 90 days:

  • Andorra
  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Brunei
  • Chile
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Ireland
  • Israel
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Monaco
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Qatar
  • South Korea (Republic of Korea)
  • Romania
  • San Marino
  • Singapore
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Taiwan
  • United Kingdom

What you should know

While the Visa Waiver Program makes travel to the US easier for many, it still comes with responsibilities. Make sure you apply for ESTA ahead of time and that your travel plans meet the requirements.

And if you’re from a country not on this list like Nigeria or India, you’ll still need a visa to visit the US. Got your ESTA approved? Then pack your bags, you’ve got 90 days to explore!
