Sir Robert McAlpine wins City of London dual-tower job

Sir Robert McAlpine has been appointed to deliver a dual-tower high rise in the City of London in a deal reported as being worth £500m.

The tier one contractor today announced it had won the job at 2 Finsbury Avenue from client Broadgate, a joint venture between British Land and GIC under a long-standing framework agreement covering the Broadgate area’s masterplan.

The scheme, granted planning permission in August 2021, will include a 36-storey tower and one of 20 storeys, reaching 170 metres into the London skyline.

Confirming the news, Grant Findlay, executive managing director of buildings at Sir Robert McAlpine, said that 2 Finsbury Avenue is the sixth scheme in the Broadgate framework, following the multi-award-winning 100 Liverpool St and 1 Broadgate projects.

He added that the deal demonstrated “our commitment to nurturing close relationships with our clients”.

The contractor and client are keeping the contract price close to their chest but it was reported today by Construction Enquirer as being around £500m.

This price was originally quoted by Building magazine’s website in an article about the scheme two years ago today, which said McAlpine had confirmed its appointment to the job at that point.

It remains unclear if design efficiencies have kept the £500m price stable over the past two years of materials inflation — Construction News is seeking clarification from Sir Robert McAlpine on these details.

The half-hectare site is located at the north west corner of the Broadgate campus, on the northern side of Finsbury Avenue Square and is currently occupied by two 1980s office buildings.

The new scheme would comprise a total of 107,000 square metres of floorspace, of which 83,000 square metres will be offices.
