Inside Princess Diana’s explosive claims about the crowded royal marriage that shook everyone

Princess Diana’s marriage to then-Prince Charles has long remained one of the most closely examined chapters in modern royal history, and her own words and private recollections continue to cast a lasting shadow over that period.

In her landmark 1995 BBC Panorama interview, Diana famously hinted at the breakdown of her marriage, remarking: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”

The comment was widely understood as a reference to Charles’s relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla.

Years earlier, tensions reportedly came to a head in emotionally charged encounter said to have taken place at a private family gathering.

According to royal biographer accounts and testimony from Diana’s former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, the late Princess of Wales decided to confront the situation directly.

Wharfe recalled that Diana, feeling increasingly isolated at the event hosted by Camilla’s sister Annabel Elliot, spent time quietly observing before asking to be taken to where Charles and Camilla were sitting.

He described the moment as unexpectedly tense, saying the scene felt “like freeze-framing a moment in time” as she entered the room.

According to his account, she then addressed Camilla directly, allegedly saying: “Please don’t treat me like an idiot, I know what’s going on.”

The exchange, he said, required significant composure from the young princess, who was still navigating the pressures of public life and an increasingly strained marriage.

Reports drawing on Diana’s recorded reflections for Andrew Morton’s biography Diana: Her True Story suggest that Camilla’s response was pointed and personal, referencing Diana’s position, her marriage, and her public image.

Diana, in turn, is said to have replied simply: “I want my husband.”

Wharfe later described the aftermath as deeply emotional, claiming Diana was visibly shaken following the encounter.

Royal commentators have long noted that the period marked a turning point in the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage, which had already begun to unravel by the early 1990s.

The couple separated in 1992 and their divorce was finalised in 1996. Diana died the following year in 1997.

Charles and Camilla eventually married in 2005.
