Rumour: New Fallout Game from Obsidian in the Works, But Has to Cancel Avowed Sequel

Microsoft developer Obsidian Entertainment has begun work on a new Fallout game, as part of a considerable overhaul of the studio, a new Bloomberg report claims.

A new RPG entry in the Fallout series is coming from the team, but there are casualties: the outlet reports an Avowed sequel has been cancelled alongside other unannounced projects, and the developer has lost roughly a quarter of its workforce to layoffs.

Josh Sawyer, famous for his roles on Fallout: New Vegas and the Pillars of Eternity games, shall reportedly serve as the lead on the new Fallout game. Of course, Obsidian is best known for its work on the former title, and in the time since, it has made two titles similar to it in The Outer Worlds and the recent follow-up.

The report, from Jason Schreier, speaks of the project being at the start of development, so the chances we see it in a public setting any time soon are very slim. In the meantime, there are strong rumours of a Fallout 3 remake being in production, with a view to launching it in the next few years.

As for that Avowed follow-up, Schreier reports all hope doesn’t seem completely lost on it seeing the light of day.

There’ll still be “some” Obsidian employees working on it while they wait for the Fallout project to be in a state where it requires more hands. Work on the Avowed sequel was apparently going well and would have been revealed in the next 12 months, but it didn’t fit into Asha Sharma’s strategy.
