FC Porto have confirmed the signing of Nigerian striker Terem Moffi from French side OGC Nice, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles forward joins the Portuguese giants on loan until the end of the season and an option to make the move permanent for €8m.

The 26-year-old becomes only the fifth Nigerian footballer to represent the Dragons, placing him in a small and notable group that includes Abraham Marcus, Chidozie Awaziem, Mikel Agu and current Porto defender Zaidu Sanusi.

Sanusi, who joined from Santa Clara in 2020, remains the most successful Nigerian in the club’s history, having made 141 appearances and scored eight goals, a benchmark Moffi will hope to chase down in Porto’s famous blue and white colours.

Moffi arrives after a challenging spell in France, having been sidelined since late November following an incident involving supporters at Nice. The striker will wear the number 29 shirt at Porto and links up again with familiar faces, including midfielder Pablo Rosario and head coach Francesco Farioli, under whom he enjoyed his most productive spell on the Côte d’Azur.

Soccer Terem Moffi’s long road to Porto

Born in Calabar, close to Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, Moffi left home at the age of 17 to pursue his football education in England with Buckswood Football Academy.

His professional breakthrough came far from the spotlight, in Lithuania, where prolific spells with Žalgiris Kaunas and FK Riteriai announced him as a striker of rare physical presence and sharp finishing instincts.

A remarkable return of 20 goals in 21 league matches earned him a move to Belgian side Kortrijk, before the Covid-19 pandemic curtailed that chapter. Still, Moffi made his mark quickly, scoring six times in 11 appearances, prompting Lorient to bring him to Ligue 1.

In France, his rise accelerated. He netted 15 league goals in the 2020-21 season, a run that earned him his Super Eagles debut under Gernot Rohr in June 2021 against Cameroon. Further success followed, including a blistering start to the 2022-23 campaign with 12 goals in 18 matches, before his move to Nice.

At Nice, Moffi scored 20 goals in all competitions, with 11 coming under Farioli, but injuries and interruptions limited his recent output. Now, at Porto, a stadium he knows well after starting in Nice’s 3-0 defeat there in November, Moffi will be expected to provide power, presence and a reliable threat inside the penalty area as the Dragons chase success at home and in Europe.
