CSCS launches digital skills passport for competence compliance

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) has launched a new feature in its app designed to help workers and employers demonstrate competence under the Building Safety Act 2022.

The My Skills section, now integrated within the My CSCS app, provides a centralised platform for workers to store and share verified records of qualifications, training and continuing professional development (CPD).

The new tool, which CSCS is calling a “digital skills passport”, aims to improve industry compliance by offering real-time access to verified skills data via the existing CSCS Smart Check platform.

A digital CSCS card is identical to the traditional plastic version, but stored on a smartphone. It becomes available immediately after a card application is approved, allowing instant use for site access. The digital card displays an individual’s photograph, qualifications, training, occupation and card expiry date.

CSCS Group chief executive Sean Kearns said: “With the launch of the new My CSCS app, in tandem with CSCS Smart Check, we’re laying the foundations for a more connected and transparent industry.

These tools don’t just verify skills — they empower individuals, support employers, and help the entire supply chain uphold its responsibilities under the Building Safety Act. This is the infrastructure for a smarter, safer future — built by the industry, for the industry.”

According to CSCS, the app enables cardholders to manage their full training profile in one location, including:

  • Qualifications used in CSCS card applications
  • Self-uploaded and CSCS-verified skills and CPD
  • CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test results

The My Skills section of the app also allows users to store additional training records and evidence of CPD.

A CV-style PDF summary can be generated directly from the app, listing all CSCS cards, training, qualifications, CPD records and HS&E tests. This can be shared with employers to streamline workforce checks and demonstrate competence on site.

The update comes as industry stakeholders work to align workforce documentation with legal duties introduced by the Building Safety Act. Employers can view verified certificates within the app to support competency checks under those obligations.

The platform is also designed for integration with other industry systems, including site access tools and supply chain management software. CSCS said this would reduce administrative burdens and help ensure instant verification of competence across roles in construction, the built environment and domestic work.

CSCS said the initiative offers benefits for various groups across the industry:

  • Workers gain greater visibility of their credentials and control over their career development
  • Employers and site managers receive instant access to verified data for recruitment and safety-critical decisions
  • Clients and dutyholders obtain digital evidence of compliance with legal responsibilities
  • Householders can view skills and credentials of tradespeople entering their home

The app will continue to be updated in line with the industry’s development of sector-specific knowledge, experience and behaviour (SKEB) frameworks.
