Liverpool transfer news latest: Bayern Munich star linked as Arne Slot plots future without Mohamed Salah

Reports claim that Liverpool are looking to reinforce in attack, with enquiries made for a Bayern Munich star amidst fears that Mohamed Salah will leave Anfield.

Liverpool have been credited with an interest in Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman, who reportedly plans to leave the Bundesliga club in the summer.

The Reds emerged as 3-1 winners on Saturday afternoon against Southampton, moving 16 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah scored two penalties as he moved level with Sergio Aguero as the fifth-highest goalscorer (184) in the history of the Premier League.

However, the Egyptian has still not signed a contract extension and is set to leave Anfield for free at the end of the season as things stand, and his departure would leave Arne Slot with the huge task of replacing him.

Transfer expert Florian Plettenberg claims that Liverpool have inquired about Bayern winger Coman, who is reportedly available for a fee of £25-33.5m, though the journalist says that Coman would currently prefer to move to Saudi Arabia.

Why Coman is a bad fit for Liverpool

Coman has won 12 league titles in his career, with the forward part of winning teams in France, Italy and Germany, and he also scored the only goal of Bayern’s clash against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2019-20 Champions League final.

Despite his trophy success, the winger has been plagued by injury issues, and he has worryingly only started 20 or more games in the league once.

Additionally, the Frenchman has never managed to score 10 league goals in any season, finding the back of the net 45 times in 221 top-flight matches.

It should also be noted that Coman will be 29 by the time the 2025-26 season starts, and he is unlikely to be able to perform at a high level on a long-term basis.

Salah is impossible to replace

While Coman could play on either the left or right of attack, his limited output in the final third makes him a poor candidate to replace Salah, who has scored 228 league goals.

The Egyptian is currently enjoying the best campaign of his entire career, with the forward’s tally of 27 goals and 17 assists in the league already equalling the record for direct goal involvements in a 38-game Premier League season.

Salah has been directly involved in 44 of his side’s 69 goals in the top flight, and his performances this season have only reiterated the importance of ensuring that he remains at Anfield beyond this summer.

Though Salah’s exit would lighten the wage bill significantly, there is arguably no player in world football that could come into the team and replicate the winger’s impact, making him practically irreplaceable.
