West Virginia basketball under Ross Hodge: Insiders share transfer portal news, 2025 recruits, targets, roster

Basketball

The West Virginia Mountaineers basketball team hired North Texas’ Ross Hodge to fill their head coaching vacancy following the departure of Darian DeVries. Hodge’s staff at North Texas has been largely the same in his two seasons as a Division I coach, and they could all be viable options to join their boss on the West Virginia basketball coaching staff. Hodge will have to hit the ground running to reshape a West Virginia basketball roster that has been hit hard with players entering the college basketball transfer portal. Hodge will look to follow the blueprint of schools like Kentucky and Arkansas, who were able to turn over their rosters last offseason in order to make deep runs in the 2025 NCAA Tournament bracket. If you love the Mountaineers, or just want to know who will call the shots for West Virginia basketball in the future, be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at EerSports, the 247Sports affiliate that covers West Virginia.

The Mountaineers will need to re-haul their roster following the departure of DeVries. Five current players have entered the transfer portal, including guard Sencire Harris. Harris started at guard for the Mountaineers this past season and averaged 5.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists. The team’s third and fourth-leading scorers, Amani Hansberry and Jonathan Powell, have also submitted their names in the transfer portal. Hodge could go after those players in hopes they’ll come back and play in Morgantown.

Another avenue Hodge could look into is recruiting talent from North Texas to follow him to WVU. One player that could make that transition is junior forward Brenen Lorient, who was the Mean Green’s second-leading scorer with 11.9 points per game. Lorient is an effective shooter and tenacious defender, a perfect building block for Hodge’s new roster at West Virginia. See more West Virginia basketball roster news at EerSports.
