Only 2.7GW of coal power was retired in the same period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The coal expansion stems from a surge in power plant approvals that followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatechangenews.com\/2021\/09\/28\/chinas-power-crunch-fuel-anti-climate-backlash-analysts-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">power shortages<\/a> caused primarily by high coal prices in 2021, when blackouts and factory shutdowns hit roughly 20 Chinese provinces.
