The Global Chess League returns for its fourth season on September 5, with Bengaluru set to host the competition for the first time.<\/p>\n

The nine-day competition will run until September 13, with six franchises competing in a double round-robin league stage before the knockouts.<\/p>\n

The season brings together some of the biggest names in chess, including Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand, Alireza Firouzja, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Javokhir Sindarov.<\/p>\n

The league will also feature Anish Giri, Arjun Erigaisi, Levon Aronian, Wei Yi, Nihal Sarin and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, alongside leading women’s players such as Divya Deshmukh, Koneru Humpy, Zhu Jiner, Kateryna Lagno, Harika Dronavalli and Bibisara Assaubayeva.<\/p>\n

Season 4 marks the second consecutive edition of the GCL in India after last year’s competition in Mumbai.<\/p>\n

Magnus Carlsen returns<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biggest chess storyline of the season is the return of Magnus Carlsen, who had skipped Season 3.<\/p>\n

Carlsen will represent defending champions Alpine Pipers as their Icon player. The team also features Anish Giri and Vidit Gujrathi on the men’s Superstar boards, while Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh make up its women’s pairing.<\/p>\n

Divya will be making her GCL debut after a breakthrough year that saw her win the Women’s World Cup in Batumi. The 19-year-old defeated Humpy in the final to become the first Indian winner of the tournament and subsequently earned the Grandmaster title.<\/p>\n

The Pipers’ Prodigy player will be Volodar Murzin, the 2024 World Rapid champion.<\/p>\n

The combination of Carlsen, Giri, Vidit, Humpy, Divya and Murzin makes the defending champions one of the teams to watch in Bengaluru.<\/p>\n

Anand changes teams<\/strong><\/p>\n

Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will also have a new home in Season 4.<\/p>\n

After representing Ganges Grandmasters in the first three editions, Anand moves to PBG Alaskan Knights, where he will occupy the Icon board.<\/p>\n

Anand will lead one of the youngest teams in the league. The Knights have 15-year-old Turkish star Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus and Arjun Erigaisi on the men’s Superstar boards, while Kateryna Lagno and Nino Batsiashvili occupy the women’s positions.<\/p>\n

Seventeen-year-old Abhimanyu Mishra will make his GCL debut as the team’s Prodigy player.<\/p>\n

Two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings have retained much of their established core, including Alireza Firouzja, Wei Yi, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Zhu Jiner.<\/p>\n

Ganges Grandmasters have opted for experience, with Ian Nepomniachtchi on the Icon board alongside Levon Aronian and Leinier Dominguez.<\/p>\n

Mumba Masters will be led by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, while FYERS American Gambits feature Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov, Daniil Dubov and Nihal Sarin.<\/p>\n

How does the Global Chess League work?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The GCL is different from a conventional individual chess tournament because the result is determined by teams.<\/p>\n

Six franchises compete in a double round-robin league stage. Each team fields six players in every match, i.e. one Icon, two Superstar men, two Superstar women and one Prodigy.<\/p>\n

All six players play simultaneously, with their individual results contributing to the team’s overall score.<\/p>\n

The entire team plays with the same colour, which is decided by a coin toss before the match.<\/p>\n

Games are played under rapid time controls, with each player receiving 20 minutes and a two-second increment from move 41.<\/p>\n

The scoring system also gives an additional incentive to players with the black pieces. A win with Black is worth four Game Points, compared with three for a win with White. A draw gives one Game Point to each player.<\/p>\n

The team that scores more Game Points in a match receives three Match Points. If the match is tied, both teams receive one Match Point.<\/p>\n

Triveni Continental Kings enter the season as the most successful franchise in GCL history, having won the first two editions.<\/p>\n

Where to watch?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fans can watch the live action on GCL’s official YouTube channel, with 8Bit Creatives being appointed the league’s official broadcast and production agency and will produce the nine-day live broadcast.<\/p>\n

The production will use more than 30 cameras across three halls, including Jib and Steadicam coverage, individual board cameras and dedicated cameras capturing player reactions. In a first, will also be two independent live feeds in English and Hindi.<\/p>\n

Live DGT board data will be integrated with real-time evaluation graphics, player statistics and analysis boards. An LED-driven in-arena setup will bring live data and storytelling into the venue itself<\/p>\n

The franchise model has also begun attracting interest from figures outside chess. In August, former Barcelona and Spain footballer Gerard Pique joined FYERS American Gambits as a strategic shareholder. The franchise’s ownership group also includes former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin.<\/p>\n

Four years after the league began in Dubai with an unusual franchise-based format, Season 4 represents another test of that model.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
