But in that process, I now realize that there is a precondition to the human edge that hasn’t quite made its way into the conversation yet—without which none of the rest is possible.

That precondition is psychological safety.

The human skills that I believe will save us from irrelevance in an AI world are not personality traits that people either have or don’t have. They are skills and behaviors that can be learned and honed. However, these skills will only ever surface in the right climate.

You cannot be a critical thinker in a room where consensus is rewarded or where challenging a narrative is ignored or frowned upon. Nor can you consider taking risks if the cost of being wrong is public embarrassment or reputational damage. Without the right conditions, these skills won’t surface, no matter how talented an individual. It’s akin to planting a sunflower in a desert and expecting it to thrive … it might have the sunshine it needs, but it will die from intense heat and lack of water.

Why Human Skills Need Psychological Safety

Psychological safety is often filed in the same category as culture or well-being—a nice to have but not business critical for the organization to succeed. However, as Amy Edmondson’s research has established, psychological safety is the number one predictor of high-performing teams, and there’s a reason for that.

At its core, psychological safety is the belief that a team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking, i.e., you can ask a question, admit a mistake or challenge an idea without fear of embarrassment or retribution. Think about what that actually entails: Quality requires someone to flag an error before a report is sent; business resilience needs a team to surface bad news while there is still time to act on it; innovation requires someone to put forward an unproven idea aloud before it’s fully polished or to see things through a different lens. That happened in IKEA: Someone chose to look at the gaps in the capabilities of its customer service AI bot and then retrain and redeploy staff to meet the new business opportunity it uncovered—a case study I explored in my last article.

It also brings me back to the 93/7 problem around investment in AI. Data from Deloitte tells us that 93% of AI investment is in the technology, with only 7% in the human capacity required to use it well. That is a worrying imbalance, but there’s something else: Even when organizations invest in people development, upskilling and training, those investments will deliver little if meetings remain dominated by the loudest or most senior voices in the room and decisions are made by consensus rather than through genuine discussion.

Safety On Its Own Is Just Comfort

When talking about psychological safety, it’s important not to confuse safety with comfort. A team that feels psychologically safe may feel low friction and pleasant, but without drive and accountability, it’s a perfect breeding ground for stagnation. Mediocrity will thrive because pointing out mistakes or challenging ideas would feel unkind, and when no one feels challenged, motivation and personal development wanes.

The sweet spot? A culture where it’s safe to speak up and where everyone is committed to excellence. Edmondson calls this the learning zone—but to put it more bluntly, it’s the only zone where the human edge can thrive. Psychological safety isn’t the soft prerequisite to the human edge. It’s the infrastructure needed for it to thrive.

Build The Psychological Safety Infrastructure: Five Practical Moves

To build the psychological safety infrastructure for the human edge to thrive, leaders need a blueprint. Here are five practical behaviors that every leader can start today:

• Model vulnerability first. Admit when you don’t know something, share something you recently learned or ask for help on something you’re genuinely struggling with. Your team will only be as vulnerable as you are.

• Make it safe to speak up—especially with bad news. When someone raises a concern or flags a problem, thank them, ask curious questions and focus on “What can we learn?” rather than “Who’s to blame?” Never shoot the messenger.

• Create structured space for dissent. In meetings, invite disagreement directly: “What am I missing?” or “Who sees this differently?” Call on quieter voices and separate idea generation from evaluation so people can think aloud without immediate critique.

• Run blame-free retrospectives. After projects, ask: What went well? What didn’t? What will we do differently? Frame work as a learning challenge, not a test of perfection. Acknowledge “attempted shots” even when the idea doesn’t land.

• Be consistent. Psychological safety erodes when leaders are responsive to some people and dismissive of others. If someone is interrupted, step in: “Let’s hear what Sarah was saying.” Consistency across the team creates trust.

The organizations that will make the most of AI over the next decade won’t be the ones with the best tools or algorithms. They’ll be the ones with people who have the skills to think critically, problem-solve, build relationships and communicate well. But these skills won’t emerge from training and coaching alone. They will only surface within an environment where people feel safe enough to think, speak and behave like humans operating at their best, where psychological safety is the infrastructure on which to build that human edge.

Forbes Coaches Council is an invitation-only community for leading business and career coaches. Do I qualify?

Martina Doherty

Martina Doherty | Corporate trainer & exec coach helping orgs build leaders & teams fit for an AI-driven world | MD Coaching & Consulting. getty We talk endlessly about the human edge in an AI world: the idea that as AI absorbs routine and codified work, human skills and capabilities are what will differentiate good

[568,644

post-931696","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-human","category-world
["GET
