But the clock is ticking loudly on the final days of the MLS Secondary Transfer Window, the last real opportunity to add reinforcements before 2026\u2019s home stretch.<\/p>\n<p>The hot stove has been bubbling ahead of Sept. 2, so let\u2019s take a swing through some recent business of note.<\/p>\n<p>The usual asterisks apply: Teams can still add free agents who are out of contract after the window closes (that\u2019s a much smaller pool to pick from, though), and the Roster Freeze Date is Oct. 9. The inverse of the above paragraph is also true. With most of Europe\u2019s top leagues closing their window a day or two beforehand, there\u2019s not much time left to seal big outgoing moves, either.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Atlanta land Embolo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest, longest-running transactions of the summer clanked across the finish line in recent days, as big spenders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/atlanta-united\/\">Atlanta United<\/a> officially welcomed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/atlanta-united-acquire-swiss-striker-breel-embolo\">Breel Embolo<\/a>. The Swiss international was unveiled to fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday as the Five Stripes beat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/sporting-kansas-city\/\">Sporting Kansas City<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/mls-regular-season\/2026\/matches\/atlvsskc-08-23-2026\/\">2-1<\/a>, for their third win in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Prominent European clubs, among them recently-promoted English Premier League side Ipswich Town, reportedly sought to hijack the big striker\u2019s $18 million move across the Atlantic from France\u2019s Stade Rennais. But Embolo liked what he saw in Atlanta, where he\u2019ll be the spearhead of the attack as head coach Tata Martino &#038; Co. try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/breel-embolo-looks-to-inspire-people-with-atlanta-united\">restore ATLUTD\u2019s past glory<\/a>, starting with a late dash from last place into this year\u2019s Audi MLS Cup Playoffs field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think [at age] 29, a lot of people in Europe, they are a little bit shocked, or they wish maybe to see me in England or in Spain or in Italy,\u201d Embolo, Atlanta\u2019s fourth summer arrival, told MLSsoccer.com and other outlets in a roundtable discussion after his introductory press conference on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think it&#8217;s also for me a sign, to show to the other ones that I&#8217;m not coming here just to rest. I want to help the club to get where they belong.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n                                <iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8R-VOSAhlLc?feature=oembed\" allowfullscreen title=\"OUR NEW STRIKER IS HERE \ud83d\udea8 | Ready to hit all the right notes \ud83c\udfbc\"><\/iframe>\n                            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The big striker and his family got a helpful taste of North American life during this summer\u2019s 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/competitions\/fifa-world-cup\/\">FIFA World Cup<\/a>, and revealed that his past experiences with American teammates like Weston McKennie, Haji Wright and Bryan Reynolds opened his eyes to the soccer revolution underway on this side of the pond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m trying also to change this mentality, because I think everything has a start, and if you see now the players with quality, and in the last year how the US national [team] performed, you see that it&#8217;s a big, big, big step in everything,\u201d Embolo noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the facilities are, almost everywhere, better than any team in Europe. So I think you have the capacity to bring the football, the soccer here to the next step. And if I can bring a little contribution, it will be nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\n                                <iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8hhwriGe9SY?feature=oembed\" allowfullscreen title=\"Behind Embolo's COLD CELLY\"><\/iframe>\n                            <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Sporting splashing cash<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MLS&#8217;s biggest movers this summer have not been Atlanta, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/inter-miami-cf\/\">Inter Miami CF<\/a>, the Los Angeles clubs or other traditional heavy hitters, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/sporting-kansas-city\/\">Sporting KC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This marks the first full transfer window since owner Peter Mallouk acquired a majority stake in the club over the winter, and <a href=\"https:\/\/kcsoccerjournal.com\/03\/27\/2026\/new-sporting-kc-owner-mallouk-plans-to-spend-a-lot\/\">Mallouk\u2019s pledge<\/a> \u2013 posted in reply to a fan on Twitter, no less \u2013 to spend \u201ca lot\u201d on SKC\u2019s ongoing roster overhaul has proved accurate and then some.<\/p>\n<p>The Midwesterners handed Greek giants Olympiacos a reported $18 million-plus to make Brazilian winger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/sporting-kansas-city-acquire-andre-luiz-in-club-record-deal\">Andr\u00e9 Luiz<\/a> a Designated Player; that\u2019s roughly double their previous club-record expenditure, on Mexico international Alan Pulido in 2019. (And they\u2019d already taken an even bigger swing at Egyptian superstar Mo Salah earlier in the summer.)<\/p>\n<p>Sporting director David Lee also shipped a reported seven-figure sum to LIGA MX\u2019s FC Ju\u00e1rez for Colombian center back Mois\u00e9s Mosquera, and just this morning completed a big intra-league deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/austin-fc\/\">Austin FC<\/a> for homegrown midfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/owen-wolff\/\">Owen Wolff<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/sporting-kansas-city-acquire-owen-wolff-from-austin-fc\">cash-for-player trade<\/a> for up to $7.6 million plus a sell-on percentage.<\/p>\n<p>We suspect they\u2019re not done yet, either.<\/p>\n<p>Lee told <em>The Athletic<\/em> that SKC plan to field three Designated Players by next season, if not sooner. And they\u2019ve just opened up two DP slots, one by buying out Spanish playmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/sporting-kansas-city-manu-garcia-mutually-terminate-contract\">Manu Garc\u00eda<\/a>, and the other via our next item\u2026<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Adding a Brazilian touch \ud83c\udde7\ud83c\uddf7 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bgyPFvTqq9\">pic.twitter.com\/bgyPFvTqq9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sporting Kansas City (@SportingKC) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SportingKC\/status\/2089714357135392934?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 18, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Seattle swing for Serbian spearhead<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Newly-flush Sporting KC are even feeling bullish enough to part company with their most productive attacker (26g\/5a in regular-season play) of the past year and a half, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/dejan-joveljic\/\">Dejan Jovelji\u0107<\/a>, via a $6 million \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/seattle-sounders-acquire-dejan-joveljic-from-sporting-kansas-city\">cashfer<\/a>\u2019 with the struggling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/seattle-sounders-fc\/\">Seattle Sounders<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s technically a profitable transaction, considering SKC paid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/la-galaxy\/\">LA Galaxy<\/a> $4 million for the Serbian international shortly after he led the Gs to their 2024 MLS Cup triumph, and Sporting aim to fill his spot with an even bigger name from abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it also looks like smart business for the Sounders, who have been hampered by an injury crisis that\u2019s contributed to a 1W-8L-1D skid across all competitions since the FIFA World Cup pause and badly need reinforcements.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, Seattle have not signed a player from outside their organization over the last four summers, a reflection of their reliance on the player-development system they\u2019ve built across their academy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlsnextpro.com\/\">MLS NEXT Pro<\/a> side Tacoma Defiance.<\/p>\n<p>Their current predicament \u2013 they\u2019ve plummeted down the Western Conference standings and out of the playoff places \u2013 has exposed the limitations of that economical approach. The Galaxy boast just six league victories this season and have yet to win back-to-back matches.<\/p>\n<p>So LA made a bold move to sign Mexican superstar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/players\/hirving-lozano\/\">Hirving \u2018Chucky\u2019 Lozano<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/la-galaxy-acquire-chucky-lozano-from-san-diego-fc\">loan<\/a> from their SoCal counterparts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/clubs\/san-diego-fc\/\">San Diego FC<\/a>, then bolstered their engine room with FC Barcelona alum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/la-galaxy-sign-spanish-midfielder-sergi-roberto\">Sergi Roberto<\/a> and also added Japanese forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlssoccer.com\/news\/prepla-galaxy-sign-kyogo-furuhashi\">Ky\u014dgo Furuhashi<\/a> from English outfit Birmingham City.<\/p>\n<p>Will it be enough to salvage their season, or might the six-time champs make another big swing?
