The\u00a0forecast\u00a0highlights\u00a0how rising transportation and travel costs are increasingly driving\u00a0higher\u00a0industry\u00a0prices,\u00a0ahead\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0number\u00a0of trips.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is according to the\u00a0<em>2026\u00a0<\/em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gbta.org\/research\/2026-business-travel-index-bti?utm_medium=pr&#038;utm_source=cision&#038;utm_campaign=product_global_research_bti_august_2026&#038;utm_content=pressrelease\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"<em>GBTA Business Travel Index<\/em>&#8220;><em>GBTA Business Travel Index<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0(\u201cBTI\u201d) Annual Global Report\u00a0and\u00a0Forecast<\/em>,\u00a0released today\u00a0which projects\u00a0global business travel spending\u00a0to increase\u00a0<strong>7.2%<\/strong>\u00a0in 2026. The report\u2019s\u00a0first-ever\u00a0analysis of\u00a0worldwide business travel volume\u00a0projects\u00a0approximately\u00a0<strong>1.84\u00a0billion trips\u00a0<\/strong>for work will be taken<strong>\u00a0in 2026<\/strong>. This is\u00a0up from an estimated\u00a0<strong>1.82 billion trips in 2025\u00a0\u2013 an increase of\u00a01.3%<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gbta.org\/research\/2026-business-travel-index-bti?utm_medium=pr&#038;utm_source=cision&#038;utm_campaign=product_global_research_bti_august_2026&#038;utm_content=pressrelease\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"report\">report<\/a>\u00a0also reveals that global business travel spending grew\u00a0<strong>8.4% in 2025 to $1.59 trillion<\/strong>, outperforming last year\u2019s forecast of 6.6% growth, supported by stronger-than-expected economic activity, easing trade tensions\u00a0in\u00a0the second half of the\u00a0year\u00a0and\u00a0overarching currency exchange\u00a0effects. Global\u00a0spending is projected to surpass\u00a0<strong>$2 trillion by 2030,<\/strong>\u00a0one year later than forecast last year\u00a0due to\u00a0moderating growth rates\u00a0after 2026,\u00a0yet\u00a0still\u00a0supported by sustained business investment and international commercial activity.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Unveiled by the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) during its\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/convention.gbta.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"2026 Convention\">2026 Convention<\/a>\u00a0in Chicago, the 18th edition of the BTI\u2014made possible again this year by Visa\u2014represents\u00a0the industry\u2019s most comprehensive outlook on business travel. The report covers 72 countries and 44 industries and includes survey insights from more than 4,700 business travelers across 66 global markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big story this year is that companies haven\u2019t stepped away from travel, but they are increasingly more selective and productivity-focused,\u201d said Suzanne Neufang, CEO of GBTA. \u201cWhile business travel spending continues to grow,\u00a0the number of\u00a0trips\u00a0is rising more slowly,\u00a0making it necessary for all of\u00a0us to assess\u00a0industry and organizational impact. Travel remains essential,\u00a0and\u00a0companies are\u00a0critically\u00a0disciplined about where,\u00a0how\u00a0and why they travel.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs business travel spending grows faster than trip volume, companies are placing greater emphasis on the value of every journey,\u201d said Edward Galvin, Vice\u00a0President\u00a0and Head of North America Visa Commercial Solutions.\u00a0\u201cOrganizations need greater visibility,\u00a0control\u00a0and flexibility to manage rising travel costs and measure ROI. Modern payment technologies help travel and finance teams better track spending, improve efficiency and simplify the travel experience, making it easier for companies to adapt as business travel continues to evolve.\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/><strong>Rapidly\u00a0Rising Costs,\u00a0More Moderately\u00a0Rising Demand,\u00a0Drive\u00a0Business Travel\u00a0Industry\u00a0Growth<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>In addition to the\u00a0spending\u00a0forecast,\u00a0for the first time\u00a0this year\u2019s report\u00a0provides\u00a0global business travel volume\u00a0for 2025 and 2026,\u00a0adding\u00a0perspective\u00a0on\u00a0business travel\u2019s\u00a0growth and\u00a0the effect of rising prices.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Global business travelers made an estimated\u00a0<strong>1.82 billion business trips<\/strong>\u00a0in 2025.\u00a0Asia and Europe accounted for the highest volumes, each\u00a0approaching\u00a0600 million trips\u00a0or more. This is\u00a0driven by APAC\u2019s concentration of business travel activity and Europe\u2019s strong regional connectivity.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0estimated\u00a01.3%\u00a0global\u00a0increase\u00a0in 2026\u00a0to 1.84 billion trips\u00a0\u2500\u00a0roughly 25 million additional business trips \u2500 contrasts with the\u00a0anticipated\u00a07.2% rise in spending\u00a0this year, underscoring the\u00a0dampening effect\u00a0of higher transportation and travel costs\u00a0on\u00a0business\u00a0travel demand.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The Forces Reshaping\u00a0Global\u00a0Business Travel<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The forecast\u00a0identifies\u00a0four forces\u00a0shaping the\u00a0outlook for 2026:\u00a0resilient\u00a0economic growth, strong business investment, heightened geopolitical\u00a0uncertainty\u00a0and elevated transportation costs.\u00a0There are also some key assumptions:\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0conflict\u00a0involving Iran and the broader Middle East in early 2026 disrupted aviation,\u00a0trade\u00a0and energy markets, driving longer travel times, different long-haul connection points,\u00a0and higher airfares. The forecast assumes conditions\u00a0will\u00a0stabilize\u00a0and airline networks gradually normalize\u00a0in the second half of the year.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The forecast assumes global\u00a0gross domestic product (GDP)\u00a0growth slows from about 3.3% in 2025 to 2.9% in 2026, with downside risks centered on renewed geopolitical tensions, trade disruptions,\u00a0and\/or a sharper-than-expected slowdown in business investment.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Regional\u00a0Growth\u00a0Varies and\u00a0Pressure\u00a0Points Emerge in 2026<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Business travel volume in the Middle East is forecast to decline\u00a012.3% in 2026 as regional conflict weighs on activity, while Asia and Europe face\u00a0increasing\u00a0pressure from disruptions to air travel and energy markets.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>In contrast, the Americas are\u00a0benefiting\u00a0from stronger economic growth, with\u00a0artificial intelligence (AI)\u00a0and technology investment boosting the U.S. outlook, higher energy prices supporting Brazil, and greater stability in Argentina helping drive growth across Latin America.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>AI and technology-related investment is\u00a0emerging\u00a0as a significant driver of business travel growth, particularly in North America and Asia Pacific. Investments\u00a0such as\u00a0digital infrastructure, data\u00a0centers\u00a0and enterprise technology deployment are fueling demand for project-based travel, customer\u00a0engagement\u00a0and cross-border collaboration.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The top 15 markets of\u00a0the\u00a0forecasted\u00a0$1.71\u00a0trillion\u00a0global\u00a0spending\u00a0for 2026\u00a0account for $1.43\u00a0trillion, or 84%.\u00a0The two largest, the U.S. ($423.0 billion) and China ($403.7 billion), together represent about\u00a048% of total\u00a0global\u00a0spend.\u00a0In terms of growth\u00a0among the top 15 markets,\u00a0Brazil (13.8%), Australia (11.5%), South Korea (11.3%),\u00a0T\u00fcrkiye\u00a0(10.9%)\u00a0and Japan (10%)\u00a0rank among the fastest\u00a0rising.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Among sectors, the fastest business travel\u00a0spending growth through 2030 is expected in Mining and Quarrying (6.6%\u00a0CAGR), Human Health and Social Work (6.3%), and Education (6.3%).\u00a0However, these industries collectively represent\u00a0only 1.6% of\u00a0total\u00a02026\u00a0business travel spend.\u00a0While their high\u00a0growth may create some new opportunities\u00a0for business travel suppliers, it\u00a0is not expected to\u00a0meaningfully\u00a0impact\u00a0overall global business travel spend.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Conversely,\u00a0while\u00a0Utilities (4.1%\u00a0CAGR through 2030) and Manufacturing (4.4%) are expected to have slower\u00a0business travel spending growth, they collectively\u00a0represent\u00a042% of business travel spend\u00a0today\u00a0and\u00a0will continue to have an outsized impact on overall\u00a0spend\u00a0through 2030.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Global\u00a0Business Travelers Are Adapting to a Changing Travel Landscape<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In May 2026,\u00a04,700 business travelers\u00a0were surveyed\u00a0across 66 global markets\u00a0for the BTI report. Results\u00a0show business travel remained resilient in\u00a02025, and\u00a0reveal a workforce that continues to travel regularly while adapting to higher costs, evolving travel\u00a0programs\u00a0and a more uncertain global environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly three-quarters\u00a0(74%) of business travelers report traveling as much or more than in previous years, led by Asia Pacific, where\u00a0four in five (80%)\u00a0maintained\u00a0or increased their travel activity.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Travelers\u00a0remain\u00a0cautiously optimistic:\u00a0On average,\u00a028% expect to travel more in 2026 than they did in 2025,\u00a0with\u00a036%\u00a0from\u00a0the Middle East and Africa\u00a0indicating\u00a0the same.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Individual travel frequency\u00a0remains\u00a0in a typical range, with 41% taking one or two business trips in 2025, 44% taking three to 10 trips, and 15% taking more than 10.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Air travel\u00a0remains\u00a0the dominant mode of transportation, with 42% of flyers saying they typically traveled in premium cabins.
