There was nothing wrong with the ISP-supplied router, but it lacked the features needed to meet the network&#8217;s technology requirements.<\/p>\n<p>That gave me the perfect excuse to introduce them to OpenWRT, firmware that I have loved for years because it breathes new life into old network hardware. Flashing the old router felt less like upgrading the router and more like turning it into a small Linux machine.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, the same old hardware that was limited for years could run extra software, manage traffic like an advanced router, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/router-usb-port-you-should-be-using\/\" target=\"_blank\">make use of the USB port<\/a> on the back of the device.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"i-stopped-seeing-it-as-a-router-and-started-seeing-it-as-a-tiny-linux-box\">\n                        I stopped seeing it as a router and started seeing it as a tiny Linux box<br \/>\n               <\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"the-first-five-upgrades-made-the-factory-firmware-look-incredibly-basic\">\n            The first five upgrades made the factory firmware look incredibly basic<br \/>\n    <\/h3>\n<p>Once I confirmed the router was supported using the <a href=\"https:\/\/toh.openwrt.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Table of Hardware list<\/a>, installing OpenWRT was as simple as flashing it with the correct image downloaded from the <a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.openwrt.org\/releases\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">OpenWRT stable releases page<\/a>, then completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/old-router-openwrt-upgrade-do-more\/\" target=\"_blank\">first-run setup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After saying goodbye to the limited factory router admin page and hello to OpenWRT\u2019s LuCI web interface, the router already felt like a new machine. Instead of a solitary green light indicating the internet was connected, I could see uptime, memory usage, storage, active interfaces, traffic, and everything I needed to know to see exactly what the router was doing.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, factory router firmware treats the device like a finished appliance. OpenWRT allows me to install software and offers fine-grained control over everything from interface names to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/stop-installing-a-vpn-on-my-devices-except-for-router\/\" target=\"_blank\">VPN configuration<\/a>. In effect, the firmware flash is just a starting point.<\/p>\n<p>For my friend\u2019s business router, I set up the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n                                        Network-wide ad blocking and filtering with the <a href=\"https:\/\/openwrt.org\/docs\/guide-user\/services\/ad-blocking\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">luci-app-adblock<\/a> package.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        Historical graphs with luci-app statistics to record and display bandwidth, latency, processor load, and memory use.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        Congestion control with <a href=\"https:\/\/openwrt.org\/docs\/guide-user\/network\/traffic-shaping\/sqm\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">luci-app-sqm<\/a> and sqm-scripts to reduce the impact of big downloads on bandwidth and bufferbloat.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        Remote access to the business network is provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/openwrt.org\/packages\/pkgdata\/luci-proto-wireguard\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">luci-proto-wireguard<\/a>.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        A USB 5G modem for a backup internet connection using the usbutils and kmod-usb-net packages to support Ethernet-over-USB.\n                        <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After installing these base software packages, OpenWRT had already turned the router into a far more advanced device. You get whatever features the manufacturer decides, then maybe a few extras, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/easy-guide-updating-router-firmware\/\" target=\"_blank\">perform firmware updates<\/a> down the line. If the interface doesn\u2019t let you do what you need, the usual answer is to buy a new (and more expensive) router.<\/p>\n<p>OpenWRT allows me to take existing functionality and expand on it to shape it into something far more useful. In LuCI, I opened <strong>System -><\/strong> <strong>Software<\/strong>, clicked <strong>Update lists<\/strong>, and searched for whatever software packages I needed, then clicked <strong>Install<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The simple rule I follow when selecting software is that anything beginning with luci-app typically adds functionality to the web interface, while command-line tools become available over SSH.<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the cooler software packages that are my favorite parts of OpenWRT:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n                                        <code>nano<\/code> gives me a text editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/nano-vs-vim-terminal-text-editors-compared\/\" target=\"_blank\">other than Vim<\/a> to use in the console.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        <code>htop<\/code> to keep an eye on processes in the terminal.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        <code>tcpdump-mini<\/code> and <code>nmap-full<\/code> for inspecting traffic and finding devices.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        <code>luci-app-statistics<\/code> for adding full historical graphs for bandwidth and system activity.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        <code>luci-app-pbr<\/code> for creating network-wide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/easy-vpn-split-tunneling-setup-faster-speeds\/\" target=\"_blank\">split tunneling rules for VPN<\/a>.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        <code>luci-app-ttyd<\/code> to place a terminal right inside the browser.\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        <code>luci-app-nlbwmon<\/code> which shows me which devices on the network are consuming the most bandwidth.\n                        <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are just a fraction of the thousands of packages available with OpenWRT, though availability largely depends on how much space, memory, and processing speed the router has. And that\u2019s part of the appeal. The problem is typically bufferbloat, where packets line up in a big queue, and latency goes through the roof.<\/p>\n<p>OpenWRT gives my friend&#8217;s old router a way to deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/your-internet-isnt-slow-its-bufferbloat\/\" target=\"_blank\">bufferbloat<\/a> called SQM, or Smart Queue Management. I installed luci-app-sqm, opened <strong>Network -><\/strong> <strong>SQM QoS -><\/strong> selected the active WAN interface, and entered download and upload limits just below the connection\u2019s real limit of 100 Mbps. That gives SQM more than enough headroom to control bottlenecks and let the modem build up an enormous queue.<\/p>\n<p>I did notice that enabling SQM resulted in lower raw speed tests. Overall, however, applications, downloads, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/voip-advantages-disadvantages\/\" target=\"_blank\">VOIP calls<\/a> stayed responsive even when the connection was being hammered with streaming or downloads. Before attempting to enable it, I opened <strong>System -><\/strong> <strong>Software<\/strong>, refreshed the package lists, and installed these drivers so OpenWRT would recognize it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n                                        usbutils\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        kmod-usb-net\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        kmod-usb-net-rndis\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        kmod-usb-net-cdc-ether\n                        <\/li>\n<li>\n                                        kmod-usb-net-cdc-ncm\n                        <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>USButils provided the tools for identifying the modem, while the kernel modules (kmod) covered the most common USB networking modes like RNDIS, CDC-Ethernet, and CDC-NCM.<\/p>\n<p>The 5G model I used was a ZTE U30 Pro and required me to enable USB Ethernet before plugging it in. Once enabled, I used a USB-C to USB-A cable and plugged it directly into the router\u2019s USB port.<\/p>\n<p>The console immediately detected the device. Once I opened <strong>Network -><\/strong> <strong>Interfaces <\/strong>and created a new DHCP client named &#8220;<em>wanb<\/em>&#8221; and added it to the WAN firewall, it worked immediately.<\/p>\n<p>To stop the router from using the mobile connection over the wired WAN, I assigned the mobile 5G connection interface a gateway metric of 20 and the wired WAN a metric of 10. A slow processor will always be slow, tiny flash storage will still limit what I can install, and a weak wireless signal won\u2019t suddenly work just because the firmware changed.<\/p>\n<p>The exact router model and hardware revision also need to be supported by OpenWRT, and some very old hardware might struggle with advanced features. That doesn\u2019t ruin the appeal for me at all.
