<b>1<\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Toward the end of every school year, most students await with wonder \u2013 or at least used to \u2013 the arrival of their school yearbooks.\u00a0 It pains your compiler to say that, for when he was coming along in the dark ages of the 1970s, a \u201cyearbook\u201d was a\u00a0 little paperback volume put out by maybe an elementary school, but an \u201cannual\u201d was the big, thick hardbound book everyone in junior high and high school looked so forward to. \u00a0 There was as much difference between a yearbook and an annual back then as there is between a Hyundai and a Lexus today.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0While your compiler has made no detailed study on the matter, he is aware that at both his high school (Tucker High, Class of 1981) and at that of his parents (Fayette County High, Class of 1957), what would now be called the \u201cYearbook Staff\u201d nearly everywhere was referred to as the \u201cAnnual Staff.\u201d \u00a0 When did it change, and why?\u00a0 Or did it? \u00a0 (In other words, was \u201cannual\u201d for \u201cyearbook\u201d ever more than a terminology confined in usage to a portion of metro-Atlanta?) \u00a0 Does anyone know? \u00a0 Does anyone care?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Your compiler does, because it feels to him that it is just one more example of Southern speech and habits slipping away without protest in favor of dull, uninteresting, universal robo-speak and behavior.\u00a0 You may ask, \u201cWhat\u2019s he talking about?\u201d \u00a0 Well, here\u2019s just a smattering of\u00a0 the kinds of things that bother him:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nobody eats breakfast, dinner, and supper anymore \u2013 it\u2019s almost always breakfast, lunch, and either dinner or supper (but always \u201csupper\u201d if you ask your compiler.)<\/li>\n<li>Nobody eats syrup anymore \u2013 they call it \u201cSEER-up\u201d now, which sounds like something got badly burned on an open fire, instead of \u201cSIR-up\u201d as the Good Lord intended.<\/li>\n<li>Things don\u2019t happen \u201cby accident\u201d anymore \u2013 they happen \u201con accident,\u201d whatever that means.<\/li>\n<li>Folks don\u2019t drink buttermilk anymore \u2013 which removes the need, unfortunately, for needing to call regular milk \u201csweet milk.\u201d \u00a0 (Ask any waitress under about fifty for a glass of sweet milk, and note the deer-in-headlights look you will get.)<\/li>\n<li>Everybody in the church world these days seems to want to call the anteroom of a church a \u201cnarthex,\u201d which, to your compiler, sounds like a highly contagious bacterial disease. \u00a0 When he was growing up, such space was called a \u201cvestibule,\u201d a term he finds much less infectious-sounding and much more fun to say.<\/li>\n<li>Teenagers don\u2019t \u201croll\u201d yards anymore \u2014 they \u201cTP\u201d them.<\/li>\n<li>Your compiler confesses to not having had teenagers in the house for well over a decade, which may largely explain his next missed phrase, but he hasn\u2019t heard in ages of anyone \u201cgoing steady\u201d like kids used to.<\/li>\n<li>What ever happened to eating cornbread crumbled in either a glass of sweet milk or buttermilk for Sunday supper? \u00a0 Lots of families, including your compiler\u2019s, ate it every week. \u00a0 Nobody seems to do it anymore, but your compiler avers that hot cornbread crumbled in a glass, covered with sweet milk, and eaten with a spoon will heal the sick and near-about raise the dead.<\/li>\n<li>And finally, there\u2019s the annual vs. yearbook question, with which we introduced this column.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Your compiler really does not want to be a crusty old curmudgeon complaining about everything that\u2019s new-fangled about life, even though must of us would probably confess to preferring whining over counting one\u2019s blessings, at least on occasion.\u00a0 All he wants to do, really, is to pause in remembrance of some lovely old ways we used to say and do things.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0That\u2026and get folks to quit pronouncing \u201csyrup\u201d with a long \u201ce,\u201d dadgummit!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thecitizen.com\/wpimport\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Dan-Langford.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Langford\"
