{"id":922833,"date":"2026-07-27T08:16:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:16:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/27\/health-checks-proposed-for-commercial-drivers-over-65\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T08:16:17","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T13:16:17","slug":"health-checks-proposed-for-commercial-drivers-over-65","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/27\/health-checks-proposed-for-commercial-drivers-over-65\/","title":{"rendered":"Health checks proposed for commercial drivers over 65"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>\n\t\t\tCommercial vehicle drivers will have to undergo physical examinations from the age of 65 in order to keep their driving licence in future, under a government proposal aimed at boosting road safety.<\/p>\n<p>\nCurrently, only those aged 70 or above have to submit a fitness certificate.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn a paper submitted to Legco, licences for commercial drivers aged 65 to 67 would be valid for three years, while those aged 68 to 69 would only have a two-year validity period. <\/p>\n<p>\nDrivers aged 70 or above would be required to renew their licences annually.<\/p>\n<p>\nNon-commercial drivers would continue to be required to undergo a physical examination only after reaching the age of 70. However, stricter vision requirements are proposed.<\/p>\n<p>\nCommercial vehicle drivers would face even more stringent vision and hearing tests, alongside the inclusion of conditions that would disqualify them from having a licence, such as night blindness and dementia. <\/p>\n<p>\nThe commissioner for transport would also be empowered to demand medical reports from all drivers suspected of having health issues.<\/p>\n<p>\nFailure to comply could result in the cancellation, or the rejection of the issuance or renewal, of a driving licence. <\/p>\n<p>\nThe Transport Department will introduce a set of guidelines, listing out the requirements for the revamped physical examinations.<\/p>\n<p>\nOfficials hope to submit the legislative proposals to the Legislative Council within this year and implement the new measures by the middle of next year.<\/p>\n<p><span my=\"my\"><i>Edited by Thomas McAlinden<\/i><\/span>\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p> Dion Catt <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.rthk.hk\/rthk\/en\/component\/k2\/1861813-20260710.htm\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commercial vehicle drivers will have to undergo physical examinations from the age of 65 in order to keep their driving licence in future, under a government proposal aimed at boosting road safety.
