From bloggers and podcasters to YouTubers, influencers, and digital entrepreneurs, thousands of young Kenyans are building careers online, creating jobs, influencing conversations, and contributing significantly to the country’s digital economy.

Yet while creativity is abundant, many creators face a common challenge: turning their talent into sustainable businesses. Financial management, entrepreneurship skills, cybersecurity awareness, and digital literacy have become just as important as producing engaging content.

Recognising this need, Absa Bank Kenya has renewed its strategic partnership with the Bloggers Association of Kenya (BAKE), reinforcing a shared commitment to empowering Kenya’s next generation of digital creators through financial education, digital skills development, and industry recognition.

Investing Beyond Content Creation

The renewed partnership goes beyond sponsoring an awards category. It is designed to help creators build long-term, sustainable careers by equipping them with practical knowledge that extends far beyond content production.

Through the collaboration, creators, bloggers, influencers, digital entrepreneurs, and young people across Kenya will benefit from training programmes covering:

Personal financial management

Saving and investing

Entrepreneurship and business management

Digital entrepreneurship

Online safety and cybersecurity

Responsible digital engagement

As more creators transform their passion into full-time businesses, understanding how to manage finances and protect their digital assets has become increasingly essential.

Strengthening Kenya’s Creator Economy

Kenya has established itself as one of Africa’s leading digital economies and remains a global pioneer in mobile financial services. Formal financial inclusion has continued to improve, with the 2024 FinAccess Household Survey reporting that 84.8% of Kenyan adults now have access to formal financial services, an encouraging increase from previous years.

However, access to financial services does not necessarily translate into financial capability. The same survey found that only 42.1% of Kenyans are considered financially literate, leaving many individuals—particularly young entrepreneurs and creators—without the knowledge needed to make informed financial decisions.

This gap is especially significant within the creator economy, where income can fluctuate from month to month and many creators operate as independent businesses.

By combining financial education with digital literacy, the Absa–BAKE partnership seeks to bridge this knowledge gap and help creators build more resilient careers.

Supporting Excellence Through the BAKE Awards

As part of the renewed collaboration, Absa Bank Kenya will sponsor the Business Category at the BAKE Awards 2026.

Now celebrating its tenth edition, the BAKE Awards have become one of Kenya’s most respected platforms for recognising excellence in digital content creation. Over the years, the awards have grown from 14 categories to 23, reflecting the rapid evolution of the country’s digital landscape and the growing diversity of online creators.

The Business Category specifically recognises creators and publishers who educate audiences on entrepreneurship, investment, business leadership, and economic issues—content that helps inform and empower Kenyan businesses and consumers alike.

Empowering the Next Generation

Speaking about the renewed partnership, Mwihaki Wachira, Director of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Absa Bank Kenya, emphasised the importance of equipping young creators with both creative and financial skills.

She noted that as Kenya’s digital economy continues to expand, creators need more than talent alone. They require the financial knowledge and practical tools that enable them to build sustainable livelihoods and participate meaningfully in the country’s growing digital ecosystem.

The initiative also aligns with Absa’s NextGen agenda, which focuses on empowering young people through financial inclusion, skills development, and economic participation.

Why Financial Literacy Matters for Creators

The creator economy offers enormous opportunities, but it also presents unique challenges.

Unlike traditional employment, creators often manage multiple income streams, negotiate brand partnerships, pay taxes independently, invest in equipment, and operate as small businesses. Without sound financial knowledge, even successful creators can struggle to sustain long-term growth.

Training in budgeting, investing, business planning, and cybersecurity can help creators move beyond earning income to building lasting enterprises.

A Partnership with Long-Term Impact

For BAKE, the partnership arrives at a pivotal moment.

Digital creators are increasingly shaping public conversations, driving innovation, supporting businesses through digital marketing, and creating employment opportunities across Kenya. As the sector continues to grow, organisations such as BAKE recognise that supporting creators requires more than celebrating great content—it also means equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive professionally.

BAKE Chairperson Kennedy Kachwanya observed that while creative talent opens doors, financial literacy is what enables creators to build sustainable businesses and long-term careers. He noted that the collaboration with Absa will not only celebrate excellence through the BAKE Awards but also provide creators with practical financial and digital skills that strengthen their ability to succeed in an increasingly competitive digital economy.

Looking Ahead

The renewed partnership between Absa Bank Kenya and BAKE reflects a broader vision for Kenya’s digital future—one where creators are recognised not only as storytellers and influencers but also as entrepreneurs, innovators, and business leaders.

By combining BAKE’s expertise in digital literacy, online engagement, and content creation with Absa’s leadership in financial education and inclusion, the collaboration is helping build a creator ecosystem that is more innovative, financially empowered, and better prepared for long-term success.

As Kenya’s digital economy continues to evolve, partnerships like this will play an important role in ensuring that creators have more than just an audience—they have the knowledge, confidence, and resources to turn their creativity into sustainable businesses.

Kenya’s creator economy is no longer just an emerging industry—it is a powerful economic force.
