Orlando City<\/a> have already experienced an \u2018Antoine Griezmann<\/a> effect\u2019 on the pitch: Witness their 4-0 road thrashing<\/a> of the San Jose Earthquakes<\/a> on Wednesday, the Lions stylishly notching their biggest win of the season in the French superstar\u2019s first MLS match.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n On Saturday they\u2019ll feel it in the stands as well. Orlando\u2019s supporters are working intensely to provide a special welcome for Griezmann on his home debut, a visit from league leaders Nashville SC<\/a> that\u2019s turned into one of the biggest occasions of the year at Inter.co Stadium (7:30 pm ET | Apple TV<\/a>).<\/p>\n \u201cWe’re excited. It’s overdue,\u201d Jared Ambrose, a member of the Iron Lion Firm supporters group, told MLSsoccer.com on Friday. \u201cWe’re not unfamiliar with this, right? We’ve had Kak\u00e1, we’ve had Nani, we’ve had Pato \u2013 we’ve had world-class players. So it\u2019s been morning to night, in full supporter mode, for two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n Iron Lion Firm and fellow supporters group Ruckus Orlando will gather several hours ahead of kickoff to tailgate, hosting an asado and a crawfish boil, respectively.<\/p>\n Ruckus also has karaoke on the bill, and \u201cKids Water Day,\u201d a chance for young fans to beat the central Florida heat with water guns and water balloons (you might want to bring a spare set of dry clothes if you find yourself in the vicinity). Add in his effervescent performance in San Jose, where he scored his first MLS goal<\/a> and created a game-high five chances, and the wider sense of exhilaration in the wake of this summer\u2019s spectacular FIFA World Cup<\/a>, and the Lions faithful feel they\u2019re entering \u201ca new era,\u201d in Ambrose\u2019s words.<\/p>\n “I mean, he’s one of the elite players in world football of the past decade or so. So having anyone with that talent level come to your club, even if it’s at the tail end of their career, I think is still phenomenal,\u201d said ILF member Gabe Holt. \u201cIt’s not about players quote-unquote retiring to MLS, it’s about players coming and wanting to experience America and the supporters culture that we have, and just embrace what we bring.\u201d<\/p>\n Miller added: \u201cDid we all forget that he was starting in two semifinals in the [UEFA] Champions League a few months ago? He was fighting for a top spot in LaLiga, and he wasn’t a bench player by any means. He was a starter.\u201d<\/p>\n As Miller notes, Orlando have at times been overshadowed by the flashy, big-spending, MLS Cup-winning projects on either side of them in Atlanta United<\/a> and Inter Miami CF<\/a>. Then this season began in particularly discouraging fashion, with a brutal 1W-6L-1D start prompting the departure of longtime head coach Oscar Pareja<\/a> as a leaky defense put the Lions on track to break league records for most goals conceded.<\/p>\n Griezmann\u2019s talent and personality have changed that narrative dramatically, aided by the return of fan favorite Daryl Dike<\/a>, key contributors like Wilder Cartagena<\/a> back from injury and the rising form of goalkeeper Max Cr\u00e9peau<\/a> after his World Cup campaign with Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWith the way this league is, there’s so much parity that when you bring in a player of Griezmann’s class, with the right players around them \u2013 and we do have the right players \u2013 I think we can really make a run and have an impact,\u201d said Ambrose.<\/p>\n \u201cThe league is growing, the league is getting more competitive every year. You can’t just sit back and wait. And I think this is a testament to that \u2013 we’re ready to compete and to make a run in every competition that is in front of us.
