India has scrapped licensing requirements for radio spectrum used by crash-avoidance and self-driving systems in cars, removing a commercial barrier for automakers as it seeks to make some of the world’s \u200bdeadliest roads safer.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

In notices on Thursday, the government waived licence requirements for radar sensors in the 77GHz \u200bto 81GHz frequency band, allowing companies to use the spectrum without separate allocation by authorities.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

A \u200bseparate notice did the same for systems in the 5.9GHz band, which enable vehicles to communicate with each other and roadside infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

INDIA ALIGNS WITH GLOBAL STANDARDS<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The move aligns India with standards used in the US \u200band the European Union, allowing carmakers to deploy standardised, off-the-shelf hardware rather than build costlier \u200blocal versions, lowering costs and speeding adoption.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Luxury carmakers Mercedes-Benz<\/a> and BMW, which already offer radar-based driver assistance abroad, \u200ccan \u2060roll out the same systems in India.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Domestic players Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra could more easily introduce advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), pushing premium safety features into cheaper models.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Suppliers such as Germany’s Bosch and Continental, and chipmaker Qualcomm, also stand to benefit.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Radar sensors help gauge safe distances and \u200benable features such as \u200bemergency braking, adaptive \u2060cruise control and blind-spot warnings, forming a foundation for autonomous driving.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) systems warn drivers of hazards beyond their line of sight, such as a \u200bcar braking around a blind curve or an approaching ambulance.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

A 2023 government \u200bpanel said most \u2060traffic problems occur in such situations. “Most sensors do not work well in these scenarios, and V2X fills the gap,” it said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The panel also recommended adding V2X to India’s voluntary Bharat NCAP safety \u2060ratings, which \u200bassess crash performance rather than mandate specific features.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

On India’s \u200bcrowded roads, drivers often face hazards ranging from cattle to pedestrians, while lane discipline and speed limits are widely flouted \u200band weakly enforced.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
