Carolina had just played in a Super Bowl. It started 1-7 instead. What remained of the passing game was a rookie second-round pick in Keary Colbert and a 36-year-old Ricky Proehl, and every defensive coordinator in the league knew it.

Muhammad put up 1,405 yards anyway. Colbert set Panthers rookie records that season and still finished 651 yards behind him.

“That legendary 2004 season, 93 catches, 1,405 receiving yards, 16 touchdowns, and a PFN wide receiver impact score of 95.7 that to this day ranks 8th all-time dating back to 1999, among the likes of Wes Welker, Torry Holt, Marvin Harrison, Ja’Marr Chase, and [Puka Nacua],” Cummings said.

Put that in context. Nacua’s 96.3 last season was the third-highest score any receiver has posted since 1999. Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s 93.7 ranked ninth. Muhammad’s 2004 slots between them, and he got there with Jake Delhomme throwing him the ball on a team that missed the playoffs. Those 16 touchdowns remain the Panthers’ single-season record more than two decades later.

Football Why Nobody Remembers the NFL’s 39th-Leading Receiver

Muhammad retired with 860 catches for 11,438 yards, 39th in NFL history. That is ahead of Rod Smith and Chad Johnson. Cummings is honest about why it never added up to a legend.

“Over the course of his career, he only had 3 seasons with a PFN receiver impact score over 80,” Cummings said. “He had his limited prime years, but those were interspersed with injury-impacted seasons, less productive seasons. But if you look at the body of work as a whole, Muhammad left an impression that is undeniable, and his legacy stands the test of time even today.”

Greatness in bursts does not build a monument. Muhammad also spent his peak in exactly the wrong rooms. His best season came on a losing team. His most famous play came in a loss. Carolina let him walk after 2004 and bet on Smith’s recovery, which worked. Smith won the receiving triple crown in 2005 in the offense Muhammad had just vacated, then spent the next decade pushing Muhammad into second place in every franchise receiving category there is.

The play should have made him permanent anyway. In Super Bowl XXXVIII, Muhammad ran past rookie safety Eugene Wilson and caught an 85-yard touchdown from Delhomme, the longest touchdown reception in Super Bowl history. Twenty-two Super Bowls have been played since. Nobody has come close.

BE THE GM OF YOUR FAVORITE TEAM: PFN’s FREE NFL Mock Draft Simulator

Cummings closed on something that has nothing to do with any of it.

“My old-headed take is that 87, 80s numbers for wide receivers, better than single digits,” he said. “We gotta bring those back, but Muhammad was one of the best to represent it.”

He’s right on both counts. Moose was 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, a receiver who blocked like a tight end on the edge and still ran away from defensive backs on the biggest stage the sport has. The position moved toward smaller, faster and louder, and the highlight reels followed. Muhammad is in the Panthers’ Hall of Honor and not much else. That gap between what he did and what anyone recalls is exactly the point Cummings was making.

Read More Ryan Gosling

Muhsin Muhammad caught 93 passes for 1,405 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2004 while playing for a 7-9 team whose other starting receiver broke his leg in Week 1.
