As the midterms approach, Republicans are in dire need of a victory to show voters, and this housing package would demonstrate their commitment to making life more affordable for their constituents.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump does not seem to take the housing crisis seriously. He said on <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/212278\/trump-cancels-signing-biggest-housing-affordability-bill-decades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Truth Social<\/a> the bill was \u201cof minor importance\u201d and that it \u201cpales in comparison\u201d to his SAVE Act, which would limit mail-in voting and require voters to show a passport or birth certificate in order to register to vote. As of now, it just doesn\u2019t have the votes to pass. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Representative Anna Paulina Luna was caught using Claude to do her job\u2014and she doesn\u2019t care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A description of Luna\u2019s National Defense Authorization Act amendment that appeared on the House Rules Committee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rules.house.gov\/bill\/119\/hr-8800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>website<\/span><\/a><span> Wednesday was filed with a tell-tale indicator of the artificial intelligence assistant.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Squeezed in the middle of the text: \u201c11:25 AM????Claude responded.\u201d The language of Luna\u2019s amendment description has since been revised.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure contenteditable=\"false\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NewsWire_US\/status\/2069811244412829843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.newrepublic.com\/d3770f6a14ceb813b5241a80cd5bb5a95100017d.png?w=922\" alt=\"X screenshot NewsWire @NewsWire_US Rep. Most staff use it. I have told them to make sure they are double checking and more thorough,\u201d she continued. \u201cWhat dork planted this story?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Luna added that she loves Claude, but Grok is \u201cway more savage.\u201d Elon Musk\u2019s AI chatbot alternative has been riddled with a number of scandals, including instances in which it unquestioningly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cgk2lzmm22eo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>created nude images of underage girls<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/07\/10\/musk-grok-hitler-ai-00447055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>espoused Nazi beliefs<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a separate post, Luna clarified that \u201cNO legislation is ever drafted with AI.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAll bill text from the House comes from the House Legislative Council which is prohibited from using AI,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepLuna\/status\/2069842990642733421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThe screenshot you\u2019re referencing is an AI summary of the bill that\u2019s also used for spellcheck, c\u2019mon man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Nonetheless, it\u2019s important to keep public officials honest about the issue. Federal and state officials alike have been caught leaning on artificial intelligence. In October, federal judges were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/press\/rep\/releases\/grassley-scrutinizes-federal-judges-apparent-ai-use-in-drafting-error-ridden-rulings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>accused<\/span><\/a><span> of using AI to write court orders, resulting in serious factual inaccuracies. The year before, a Republican Arizona state representative was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/arizona-lawmaker-uses-chatgpt-help-craft-deepfake-legislation-rcna153432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>found<\/span><\/a><span> to have used AI software to draft deepfake legislation that was later signed into law. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span>In an already alarming moment for voting rights, the U.S. Postal Service wants to make things so much worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In response to a March executive order by President Donald Trump\u2014which directed USPS to only provide mail-in ballots to voters on a federal list\u2014the theoretically nonpartisan postal service is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/news-alerts\/postmaster-general-steiner-postal-service-will-not-deliver-mail-ballots-state-voter-rolls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>planning to implement<\/span><\/a><span> a new rule forcing states to provide the Trump administration with a list of anyone who has requested an absentee or mail-in ballot. If the states refuse, their citizens wouldn\u2019t receive their ballots.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Postmaster General David Steiner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atrupar\/status\/2069826666059235719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>made the admission<\/span><\/a><span> in a Senate hearing on Wednesday following questioning from Democratic Senator Gary Peters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf a state refuses to turn their absentee voter list over to the federal government, will the Postal Service still mail their ballots under this proposal?\u201d Peters asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnder our proposed regulation, no,\u201d Steiner replied.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<blockquote data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>PETERS: Yes or no, if a state refuses to turn their absentee voter list to the federal government, will the Postal Service still mail their ballots under this proposed rule?<\/p>\n<p>POSTMASTER GENERAL STEINER: No.<\/p>\n<p>PETERS: So the proposed rule basically coerces states to hand over their\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5bnJb5Atnr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/5bnJb5Atnr<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atrupar\/status\/2069826666059235719?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">June 24, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is basically a back-door way for the federal government to get voting information that states control under the U.S. Constitution,\u201d Peters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/news-alerts\/postmaster-general-steiner-postal-service-will-not-deliver-mail-ballots-state-voter-rolls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a><span> later. \u201cYou\u2019re telling the states, \u2018Give the federal government this information\u2014trust the federal government, trust the Trump administration, we\u2019ll take good care of these\u2014and if you don\u2019t do it, you can\u2019t mail absentee ballots.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Senator Margaret Hassan, another Democrat, said the USPS should \u201cimmediately\u201d bin the new rule, labeling it \u201cblatantly illegal.\u201d Many postal workers have similarly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/news-alerts\/postal-workers-lash-out-against-new-usps-rule-that-helps-trumps-attack-on-mail-in-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">spoken out<\/a><span> against the idea, according to Democracy Docket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thankfully, the new rule can still be blocked in courts, and multiple lawsuits have been filed in order to do so. One Massachusetts lawsuit was allowed to proceed last week, after District Judge Indira Talwani <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracydocket.com\/news-alerts\/trump-mail-voting-executive-order-federal-judge-lawsuits-proceed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>stated<\/span><\/a><span> the rule would hurt states\u2019 constitutional right to run elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Steiner said the USPS would abide by whatever the courts rule. But it\u2019s frightening to see, after years of trying to meddle with elections, that MAGA still isn\u2019t done.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Soldiers wounded in the deadliest attack of the war on Iran have accused the Pentagon of minimizing their injuries, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/wounded-soldiers-families-accuse-army-downplaying-war-injuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">CBS News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Warrant Officer Rodney Bearman and Sergeant First Class Cory Hicks were both pierced with multiple pieces of shrapnel from the March 1 Iranian drone strike on their work station in Kuwait. Medical records show Bearman suffered a concussion, hearing and vision loss, and damage to his lungs. The Army has classified his condition as \u201cnot seriously injured,\u201d even though he needed serious medical attention and days in the hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hicks suffered a traumatic brain injury, and his injuries were also listed as \u201cminor,\u201d even though he required multiple surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat assessment is unacceptable,\u201d Bearman\u2019s wife, Amy, told CBS. \u201cThey told me that my husband\u2019s injuries were classified as NSI, and they described that, or they defined that, as \u2018not seriously injured.\u2019 \u2026 He was treated and released back to duty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could just hear him breathing and then he finally said, \u2018I\u2019m going to be OK.\u2019 I waited a few moments and then asked if he returned to duty. It seemed like forever before he answered me, and then he said, \u2018I can\u2019t go back.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Doctors preferred that Bearman stay in the Kuwaiti hospital for a longer period of time, but that was denied by the Pentagon for \u201csecurity concerns.\u201d Being \u201ccleared for duty\u201d in this case means being cleared to begin recovering from injuries outside of a hospital, not that a soldier is prepared to return to active duty. Bearman returned to the U.S. on March 18 with shrapnel still in his body.<\/p>\n<p><span>Hicks required multiple emergency surgeries in a Kuwaiti hospital after the strike. Even still, the Pentagon classified his injuries as \u201cminor.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said your husband was injured, he has a minor jaw injury, and he\u2019s going to be returned to duty,\u201d Hicks said his wife was told. Hicks told CBS News that he \u201cabsolutely\u201d thinks the Pentagon has been downplaying the impact of the attack.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hicks was still in Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland at the time of this writing, almost four months after the attack, with a \u201cpretty severe\u201d traumatic brain injury. That is in no way minor.<\/p>\n<p>The Army defended its classifications of Bearman and Hicks, saying that only someone at the risk of dying within 72 hours qualifies for a \u201cseriously injured\u201d or \u201cvery seriously injured\u201d designation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe care and well-being of our Soldiers is of the highest priority. Any assertion that the Army seeks to downplay a soldier\u2019s injuries is simply not true,\u201d an Army spokesperson told CBS in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOur hope for the investigation is that an honest assessment by the Army will prevent this from happening again to other service members,\u201d Amy Bearman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReprehensible from any administration,\u201d Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/2069787565142450532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a> on X about the CBS report. \u201cTruly beyond the pale from the President who faked \u2018bone spurs\u2019 to avoid serving and combat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six soldiers were killed in the March 1 attack, and Bearman and Hicks were among 20 others wounded. The attack and the subsequent treatment of these soldiers\u2019 injuries is even more bleak when considering that the military accomplished virtually nothing of the Trump administration\u2019s stated mission: The president eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/212254\/transcript-trump-seethes-media-iran-fox-drops-brutal-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">capitulated<\/a> on a memorandum of understanding that allows Iran to maintain its missile arsenal and nuclear power program. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span>A federal judge has killed most of President Donald Trump\u2019s first executive order changing election rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>U.S. District Court Judge Denise Casper permanently banned the administration Wednesday from implementing most components of the president\u2019s 2025 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/preserving-and-protecting-the-integrity-of-american-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>order<\/span><\/a><span>, which required individuals to provide \u201cdocumentary proof of U.S. citizenship\u201d before they registered to vote. In addition to lifting that requirement, the ruling also bans the president from requiring all mail ballots to be received by Election Day, even if they were postmarked by then.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Under Trump\u2019s order, states that refused to comply would have been punished by having their federal funding withheld.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The government had argued that Democratic challenges to Trump\u2019s executive order were premature and therefore illegitimate since the changes had not yet been implemented\u2014but the Boston-based judge wasn\u2019t having it. Instead, she noted that Trump\u2019s office had effectively violated the necessary separation of powers, as only states and Congress are permitted to regulate elections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Constitution \u201cdoes not grant the President any specific powers over elections,\u201d Casper wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>Trump officials responded quickly to Casper\u2019s decision, hinting online that the ruling would be appealed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI hope the Chief Justice understands the path these rogue judges have charted for the judiciary,\u201d deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StephenM\/status\/2069828946246381808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span> on X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, Trump has worked overtime to force his unpopular election reform proposals through the legislature, throwing confirmation hearings and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/212279\/republican-rep-hill-celebrates-housing-bill-trump-killed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>bipartisan bill signings<\/span><\/a><span> to the wayside while demanding Republicans prioritize passing the SAVE America Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>The backlash to the bill\u2014which was introduced months ago on Capitol Hill\u2014has been grave, so much so that it gummed up efforts to fund Homeland Security for several months. Republicans eventually had to bail on the package to end the congressional gridlock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since he lost the 2020 election, Trump and his allies have amped up their base over contrived claims of voter fraud, a statistical nonissue in U.S. elections. For instance, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/post\/187447\/undefined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>statewide audit<\/span><\/a><span> out of Georgia, the epicenter of Trump\u2019s baseless theory, revealed in 2024 that just 20 non-citizens out of 8.2 million residents existed on the state\u2019s voter roll, just 0.00024 percent of the state\u2019s voting population. Out of those 20, only nine participated in elections years ago, before ID was required as a part of the voter verification process.
