There\u2019s a hidden cost to working from home, said Megan Cerullo<\/strong> in CBSNews.com<\/strong><\/em>. \u201cAmericans routinely say they relish the ability\u201d to do their job remotely, a perk that\u2019s expanded dramatically since the pandemic. But the often lonely nature of working from home can take a toll on mental health, according to new research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The study found that from 2011 to 2024, remote workers saw \u201ca 58% rise in hours spent alone compared with in-office workers.\u201d They also became \u201csignificantly more likely to go a full day without any human contact\u201d\u2014no chats with colleagues, no after-hours socializing with friends. Perhaps because of that isolation, remote workers \u201cvisited mental-health-care providers more frequently than non-remote workers and were more likely to rely on prescription psychiatric medication.\u201d Remote work is often credited with \u201cincreased job satisfaction and better work-life balance,\u201d but this darker flip side is \u201cworth considering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Working remotely \u201cisn\u2019t for everyone,\u201d said Kate B. Odell<\/strong> in The Wall Street Journal<\/strong><\/em>. But for working moms, it has been \u201cthe biggest innovation since the dishwasher.\u201d Blunting the traditional trade-off between paid labor and family has allowed millions of women \u201cto contribute their skills, earn money,\u201d and still \u201cbe a primary influence on their children.\u201d The demands on working moms will always be high. And the women working from home now \u201chave to work harder to develop relationships with colleagues,\u201d and often the \u201claptop is on at night and before dawn.\u201d But \u201cnot being in traffic at 5 p.m. on weekdays<\/a>\u201d may be a worthwhile compromise.<\/p>\n
