Celtic head coach Martin O\u2019Neill has provided an update on the future of Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho,\u00a0Soccernet.ng<\/u><\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Nigerian striker’s future has been uncertain since the end of last season, with questions over whether he would remain at Celtic beyond his first campaign following his free transfer from Sevilla last summer.<\/p>\n Despite an injury-hit season, Iheanacho finished strongly, scoring important goals and playing a key role as Celtic completed a domestic league and cup double\u00a0and his impressive performances towards the end of the campaign put him back in contention for a new contract.<\/p>\n However, there\u00a0were concerns over\u00a0Iheanacho\u2019s\u00a0fitness after he missed most of pre-season and spent a lengthy period on the sidelines through injury\u00a0while\u00a0Celtic have also been linked with several attacking targets this summer, raising further doubts about\u00a0his\u00a0future at the club.<\/p>\n The 29-year-old officially became a free agent after his contract expired on June 30 and has since been linked with moves to\u00a0Brazilian side Vasco da Gama<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Turkish club Bursaspor.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n Despite\u00a0already becoming\u00a0a free agent, Celtic are still hopeful of bringing Iheanacho back to Celtic Park.<\/p>\n Speaking in an interview, O\u2019Neill confirmed that discussions are ongoing as the Scottish champions attempt to reach an agreement with the Super Eagles forward before the start of the new season.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d like to do something with him. That’s the point. Of course, if we can do something relatively quickly, at least he then gets started in pre-season, which is really important for him\u201d, the Celtic manager said\u00a0via Daily Record.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n \u201cIt\u2019s something he didn’t have last year.
