Microsoft<\/a> is cutting 4,800 jobs, about 2.1% of its global workforce, including a large number of workers at its\u00a0Xbox video game<\/a>\u00a0business.<\/p>\n

\n

The layoffs included 1,600 Xbox workers, with more to come this year in a broader reorganization designed to \u201creset\u201d Xbox as it faces heightened competition, the company said Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur business today is not healthy,\u201d said a memo from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who took over the gaming division earlier this year. \u201cWe are operating at margins that are 3-10x lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharma said the industry, in which Xbox competes with Sony\u2019s PlayStation and Nintendo\u2019s Switch, is facing a severe \u201chardware crisis\u201d as costs soar for console components.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
