{"id":917367,"date":"2026-07-04T04:19:56","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T09:19:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/04\/eurovision-2026-a-win-for-bulgaria-fourth-for-australia-and-continued-controversy-for-broadcasters\/"},"modified":"2026-07-04T04:19:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T09:19:56","slug":"eurovision-2026-a-win-for-bulgaria-fourth-for-australia-and-continued-controversy-for-broadcasters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/04\/eurovision-2026-a-win-for-bulgaria-fourth-for-australia-and-continued-controversy-for-broadcasters\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurovision 2026: a win for Bulgaria, fourth for Australia, and continued controversy for broadcasters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Music <\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>In a surprising turn of events, Bulgaria have taken home the crystal microphone trophy for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 with Dara\u2019s infectious dance hit Bangaranga.<\/p>\n<p>It is Bulgaria\u2019s first-ever win and all the more poignant given this year marked the country\u2019s return to the contest after a three-year hiatus as its public broadcaster, BNT, has grappled with <a href=\"https:\/\/eurovoix.com\/2022\/10\/19\/bulgaria-local-media-reports-withdrawn-eurovision\/\">financial contraints<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cgu6QuMrwKI?wmode=transparent&#038;start=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen width=\"100%\" height=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Hosting Eurovision in 2027, while expensive, is expected to provide a welcome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurovision.com\/stories\/basel-2025-a-sustainable-and-economic-success-for-the-host-city\/\">tourism economic boost<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bulgaria\u2019s win is the first time since 2017 the jury and public sentiments have been <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-public-voting-has-turned-eurovision-from-a-song-contest-into-a-political-platform-282733\">aligned<\/a>. One tense moment during the voting saw Israel rise to first place thanks to the public vote, resulting in audible booing in the arena. However, Dara soared to the top of the board with 312 public votes to add to their 204 jury votes. <\/p>\n<p>Bulgaria\u2019s total of 516 points put it 173 points ahead of runner-up Israel, in the largest gap between first and second place in the contest\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>The bookmakers\u2019 odds tipped Finland to win with Linda Lampenius x Pete Parkonnen\u2019s duet of vocals and live violin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CmPkrjTtrwE\">Liekinheitin<\/a>. The fan favourites instead landed in sixth place. <\/p>\n<p>Live instruments are not usually permitted on the Eurovision stage unless a case can be made that they are integral to the song\u2019s artistry: it was argued successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/escinsight.com\/2026\/05\/15\/the-lampenius-rule-live-instruments-return-to-the-song-contest\/\">the violin was Lampenius\u2019 \u201cvoice\u201d<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Romania\u2019s Choke Me by Alexandra C\u0103pit\u0103nescu was another surprise favourite. Although she only gained 64 jury points, she came second in the popular vote (262 points) and third overall. It is the best outcome for a female-led rock act in the contest\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>In the lead-up to the contest, the song attracted some controversy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2026\/mar\/13\/romania-eurovision-song-choke-me-criticised-glamorising-sexual-strangulation\">alleged<\/a> to be \u201cglamourising sexual strangulation\u201d. In response, <a href=\"https:\/\/escxtra.com\/2026\/03\/18\/alexandra-capitanescu-responds-to-recent-debates-over-choke-me\/\">C\u0103pit\u0103nescu stated<\/a>, \u201cThe lyrics are about taking back control over anxiety and emotions that are choking you.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TpMQ6dhcvvE?wmode=transparent&#038;start=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen width=\"100%\" height=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Music Total eclipse of the heart<\/h2>\n<p>Australia\u2019s entry was hyped by many as a potential winner. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/graham-norton-says-australias-place-in-eurovision-is-nonsense\/l5f0os40p\">notorious Australia sceptic Graham Norton<\/a> named Delta Goodrem\u2019s Eclipse <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/in-the-eurovision-press-room-delta-goodrem-passed-the-vibe-check\/e9eau85cw\">the one to beat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Goodrem dazzled with Australia\u2019s most ambitious staging since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Eo5H62mCIsg\">Kate Miller-Heidke\u2019s<\/a> 2019 performance. Dressed in a gown adorned with 7,000 Swarovski crystals, Australia\u2019s golden girl was literally placed on a pedestal that ascended from a golden piano as she reached her vocal crescendo. <\/p>\n<p>Australia placed second in the jury votes and ninth in the public votes to land fourth place. It is Australia\u2019s second-best result, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5ymFX91HwM0\">Dami Im\u2019s astounding second place in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QMm2aqdsrOU?wmode=transparent&#038;start=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen width=\"100%\" height=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Goodrem\u2019s participation was partly funded by an Australian federal grant for international cultural diplomacy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.gov.au\/news\/australian-artistry-global-appeal\">Other recipients in the recent round<\/a> include BlakDance Australia\u2019s tour of the United Kingdom and Creative Australia\u2019s support for Khaled Sabsabi\u2019s Venice Biennale exhibit. <\/p>\n<p>Goodrem\u2019s funding underscores Eurovision\u2019s usefulness for Australia\u2019s cultural diplomacy and projection of \u201csoft power\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurovision.com\/asia\/\">Eurovision Asia<\/a> will be held in Thailand in November. Australia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/eurovision-launches-inaugural-asia-edition-in-bangkok\/6iqvy3io3\">not participating<\/a> \u2013 the rules prohibit participating in both contests.<\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen whether Australia will stay in the original Eurovision or whether it will transition to Eurovision Asia in pursuit of regional diplomatic interests. <\/p>\n<h2>Music Broadcasters boycott<\/h2>\n<p>This year, Eurovision celebrated its 70th anniversary. But rather than uniting Europe (and Australia) through music, the absence of five regular participants indicated disunity.<\/p>\n<p>Public broadcasters for Slovenia, Iceland, Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-11\/iceland-not-participating-in-eurovison-2026\/106128592\">withdrew from competition<\/a> in protest of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the European Broadcasting Union\u2019s failure to have an open discussion and vote on Israel\u2019s continued participation. While the contest claims to be non-political, critics point to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russia_in_the_Eurovision_Song_Contest_2022\">exclusion of Russia<\/a> in 2022 after its invasion of Ukraine as a precedent.<\/p>\n<p>Their absence is a blow to the European Broadcasting Union, financially and symbolically. Spain is usually one of the so-called \u201cBig Five\u201d \u2013 the five largest financial contributors to Eurovision. The Netherlands is also a large financial contributor but, more importantly, had been in the contest since the beginning in 1956.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch public broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/escxtra.com\/2025\/12\/04\/avrotros-the-netherlands-will-not-take-part-in-eurovision-2026\/\">stated<\/a> \u201cparticipation cannot be reconciled with the public values that are fundamental to our organisation\u201d. They cited humanity, press freedom and political interference as key reasons for their withdrawal.<\/p>\n<figure>\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/736305\/original\/file-20260517-57-qedovi.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&#038;q=45&#038;auto=format&#038;w=1000&#038;fit=clip\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"music Banner above a stage reads: 'No stage for genocide'. Slovenia led the call for a detailed report on the 2024 and 2025 voting results, but member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/11\/world\/europe\/eurovision-israel-gaza-netanyahu.html\">broadcasters received only a summary of its findings<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Eurovision\u2019s Executive Supervisor Martin Green stated the contest organisers were confident the 2025 contest yielded a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebu.ch\/news\/2025\/11\/ebu-announces-changes-to-eurovision-song-contest-voting-rules-to-strengthen-trust-and-transparency\">valid and robust result<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this claim, before the 2026 contest broadcasters voted on a rule change seeking to mitigate third-party campaigning and interference in the voting process. As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/11\/world\/europe\/eurovision-israel-gaza-netanyahu.html\">the New York Times<\/a>, the disparity between the statements of the executives and the resulting vote from the broadcasters raised much scepticism.<\/p>\n<h2>Music A reckoning in 2027?<\/h2>\n<p>Just before the 2026 grand final, Belgium\u2019s Flemish broadcaster VRT <a href=\"https:\/\/eurovoix.com\/2026\/05\/17\/belgium-vrt-unlikely-to-compete-in-eurovision-2027-without-a-direct-vote-israels-participation\/\">released a statement<\/a> they would be unlikely to participate in 2027 without \u201ca clear framework for participation, an open debate, and a direct vote among [union] members\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The European Broadcasting Union must take broadcasters\u2019 concerns more seriously or risk losing more participants and reputational damage.
