You\u2019re Next Up\u2026 But When Are You Up<\/em>?<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n This started as a late-night car conversation with my friends at the end of 2025. We were doing what everyone does \u2013 breaking down the year, talking through the highs, lows, and what we wanted from 2026.\u00a0Our end of year social group wrap party as it were.<\/p>\n A few hours in, I said: \u201cAll the time it\u2019s \u2018you\u2019re next up\u2019\u2026 but in 2026, I wanna be up<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n We laughed \u2013 but then we really sat on it.\u00a0 Because the truth is, we\u2019ve been progressing every single year. Real progress. Tangible growth. And still\u2026 somehow\u2026 we\u2019re \u201cnext up.\u201d\u00a0 So that raises a question: Are we actually moving forward to a finished product \u2013 or are the goalpost\u2019s constantly moving?\u00a0<\/p>\n Take someone like J. Cole<\/strong>.\u00a0 He dropped \u2018The Come Up\u2019 <\/em>in 2007, hungry and trying to prove he could stand next to anyone. He even said himself;<\/p>\n \u201cI am just trying to prove I can really rap with anybody; I can hang with anybody. I was trying to keep up with the Lil Wayne\u2019s and all that at that time<\/em>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Two years later, he\u2019s signed by Jay-Z<\/strong>.\u00a0Then comes the run: The Warm Up \/ Friday Night Lights \/ Cole World \/ Born Sinner \/ 2014 Forest Hills Drive.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n That last one? That\u2019s the one people point to. The \u201carrival.\u201d The moment he enters the \u201cBig Three\u201d conversation.\u00a0 But here\u2019s the thing, it\u2019s subjective. Some would have thought he was already there<\/em> years earlier and J Cole himself might have felt no different.<\/p>\n \n
