The president said Monday that he plans to nominate Sonderling to serve as secretary of labor.<br \/>\n            <\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <span><br \/>\n            Kevin Dietsch \/ Staff via Getty Images<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n    <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>First published on<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d12v9rtnomnebu.cloudfront.net\/logo\/publications\/hr_black.png\" alt=\"HR Dive\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The president plans to nominate Keith Sonderling \u2014 a Republican with several years of agency experience \u2014 to serve as secretary of labor, according to a Monday <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116835841525431179\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>social media post<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Sonderling, who was previously deputy secretary, took the helm as acting secretary after Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned in April amid reports of an investigation into potential misconduct.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Previously, Sonderling served in the U.S. Department of Labor\u2019s Wage and Hour Division and as a commissioner for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In Sonderling\u2019s time at DOL, he has voiced support for <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/dol-proposes-new-joint-employer-rule\/818153\/\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>employer-friendly regulations<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.dol.gov\/news-events\/blog\/how-self-audits-help-build-culture-compliance-and-trust\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>programs that encourage employers to perform self-audits<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>, report employment law violations and take corrective action.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>As an EEOC commissioner, Sonderling similarly backed <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/eeoc-commissioner-says-feds-should-reinstate-liability-shield-opinion-let\/619890\/\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>federal agency opinion letters<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>, saying they act as liability shields for employers but also benefit courts, workers and unions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>He also urged employers to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/adopting-ai-examine-the-algorithm-early-and-often-eeoc-official-says\/599026\/\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>perform self-audits<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> before implementing artificial intelligence tools at work. Employers should evaluate algorithms \u201cearly and often for biased outcomes and reengineer as appropriate,\u201d Sonderling said in a 2021 American Bar Association conference.
