{"id":916815,"date":"2026-07-01T21:12:36","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T02:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/01\/new-intermountain-alta-view-hospital-behavioral-health-center-expands-access-to-mental-health-care\/"},"modified":"2026-07-01T21:12:36","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T02:12:36","slug":"new-intermountain-alta-view-hospital-behavioral-health-center-expands-access-to-mental-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsycanuse.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/01\/new-intermountain-alta-view-hospital-behavioral-health-center-expands-access-to-mental-health-care\/","title":{"rendered":"New Intermountain Alta View Hospital Behavioral Health Center Expands Access to Mental Health Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mental Health Care in Salt Lake Valley Gets Major Boost with Opening of New Behavioral Health Center at Intermountain Health Alta View Hospital\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<div id=\"cwrap\">\n<p>Mental health care in the Salt Lake Valley is getting a major boost thanks to an investment by Intermountain Health in a new state-of-the-art Behavior Health Center\u00a0in Sandy, uTAH that will significantly increase access to mental health care and specialized services for patients throughout Salt Lake County.<\/p>\n<p>The new 56-bed Behavioral Health Center at Intermountain Alta View Hospital opens for patient care in June and doubles the number of patient beds for behavioral health care offered by Intermountain Health.<\/p>\n<p>Salt Lake County community leaders, hospital officials, behavioral health experts, and patients joined together today for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to formally unveil the new Behavioral Health Center at Intermountain Alta View Hospital in Sandy, followed by a community open house.<\/p>\n<p>The new center brings much needed mental health resources directly to the community closer to home \u2013 making high quality, compassionate care more accessible than ever before, according to local mental health experts.<\/p>\n<p>According to NAMI Utah, one in five adults in Utah struggle with their mental health, so the need for resources is vital. Thanks to this new facility, there\u2019s now more hope \u2013 and help \u2013 for patients needing services in the Salt Lake Valley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy reducing travel barriers and expanding timely access to expert care, the center will play a vital role in strengthening community well-being,\u201d said Scott Roberson, president of Intermountain Alta View Hospital. \u201cThese new resources will help ensure individuals and families in our community receive the behavioral health support they need, right when they need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new center includes\u00a0a walk-in behavioral health access center for those in crisis, a specialized medical withdrawal management program, and a unique\u00a0Maternal Mental Health Unit for new moms needing mental healthcare \u2013 the first of its kind in Utah.<\/p>\n<p>The Maternal Mental Health Unit is one of the unique features of the new center. It\u2019s\u00a0a groundbreaking inpatient program created to support the mental health needs of women during pregnancy and throughout the first year after childbirth.<\/p>\n<p>This dedicated inpatient unit provides compassionate care, separate from other behavioral health units, where moms receive support and resources to promote healing and resilience for both parent and child.<\/p>\n<p>This dedicated unit recognizes that mental health conditions during pregnancy and the postpartum period are both common and treatable, and that mothers deserve specialized care designed specifically for them.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike traditional psychiatric units, this Maternal Mental Health Unit is\u00a0separate from other inpatient behavioral health units\u00a0and intentionally designed for the unique emotional, psychological, and physiological needs associated with pregnancy and early parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes this program especially meaningful is its\u00a0whole\u2011family, compassionate approach to recovery,\u201d said Janet Hintze, RN, chief nursing officer for Intermountain Alta View Hospital. \u201cThis Maternal Mental Health Unit is about meeting mothers where they are \u2013 during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives \u2013 and surrounding them with expert, compassionate care designed just for them and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Care is delivered by clinicians with expertise in\u00a0perinatal psychiatry, trauma\u2011informed care, and maternal\u2011infant bonding, ensuring treatment plans reflect both the safety of the parent and the well\u2011being of the family.<\/p>\n<p>The unit serves individuals experiencing serious perinatal and postpartum mental health conditions, including\u00a0postpartum depression, severe anxiety, postpartum psychosis, trauma\u2011related disorders, and substance\u2011use related mental health concerns affecting pregnancy or the postpartum period.<\/p>\n<p>These conditions can significantly impact not only the individual\u2019s health, but also family stability and early bonding \u2013 making timely, specialized intervention critical.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment plans are individualized and often include psychotherapy, medication management, and supportive family involvement. When appropriate, care planning considers the mother\u2011infant relationship as part of healing, reinforcing the importance of bonding and reducing stigma surrounding maternal mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis unit will make a significant impact for women in our community who are experiencing depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges during a very vulnerable time of their lives,\u201d said Liz Owens, chief executive officer of YWCA Utah. \u201cI can\u2019t be happier to have this resource available to serve our community and the many women and families who the YWCA helps each and every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other features of the new Intermountain Alta View Hospital Behavioral Health Center:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Behavioral Health Access Center<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Walk-in crisis treatment, observation, and fast access to mental health treatment from licensed behavioral health professionals for adult patients age 18 and older. Pediatric walk-in crisis care is available at the Intermountain Primary Children\u2019s Hospital \u2013 Taylorsville campus.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Medical Withdrawal Management (detox)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Recovery from substance abuse can be challenging. The new center provides full medical help for safe withdrawal management to support patients every step of the way.
