(Brandon Bell\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div data-article-body-start>\n<div id=\"se-_R_99qanpfiupanivb_\">\n<ul>\n<li>Liz Truss said the U.K. is \u201cgetting relatively poorer, very quickly,\u201d blaming high taxes, regulation and weak incentives for growth. <\/li>\n<li>She linked inflation and inequality to \u201cdebasement of our currency,\u201d calling the lack of debate on monetary policy \u201cquite sinister.\u201d <\/li>\n<li>Now outside government, she is backing bitcoin and launching CPAC UK to build a \u201csovereignty and liberty\u201d movement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Liz Truss, the U.K.&#8217;s shortest-serving prime minister, said the country&#8217;s economy has been stagnating for decades and many of the problems result from a lack of sound money and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2021\/07\/09\/debasing-the-currency-putting-crypto-in-context\">debasement of the currency<\/a>, an erosion in the value of sterling caused by inflation and the printing of new banknotes.<\/p>\n<p>Truss, who led a Conservative government for 45 days in 2022, said the financial situation strengthened her interest in bitcoin <span data-submodule-name=\"price-chip\" data-submodule-version=\"1.0.0\" data-submodule-instance=\"default\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/price\/bitcoin\"><span><span><span>BTC<\/span><span><svg fill=\"none\" height=\"24\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\" width=\"24\"><path d=\"M15.79 11.71L13.2 14.3C12.81 14.69 12.18 14.69 11.79 14.3L9.19995 11.71C8.56995 11.08 9.00995 10 9.89995 10H15.09C15.98 10 16.42 11.08 15.79 11.71Z\" fill=\"var(--text-neg)\" \/><\/svg><\/span><span>$60,700.94<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span>, which some observers see as a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CryptoHayes\/status\/2028267321492643979?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tool against debasement<\/a>. She said she&#8217;s &#8220;very interested&#8221; in the cryptocurrency, which she first encountered when working at the Treasury and mentioned it there &#8220;to shake things up.&#8221; Truss was Chief Secretary to the Treasury for about two years until July 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the problems we have are due to debasement of our currency and lack of sound money,\u201d Truss said in an interview with CoinDesk. The absence of serious debate around money in academia and government had become \u201cquite sinister,\u201d and discussions about monetary policy had become \u201ca taboo\u201d within government, despite its central role in driving economic outcomes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For Truss, bitcoin sits alongside a wider concern about centralization and control. She warned the current system is geared toward increasing \u201ccentralized control\u201d and limiting financial independence, particularly through regulation and taxation, and positioned bitcoin as part of a pushback against that trend.<\/p>\n<p>The economy is on a \u201cvery negative trajectory,\u201d she said, warning the country faces long-term decline driven by weak growth, rising state control and what she sees as a failure of monetary policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are getting relatively poorer, very quickly,\u201d she said, pointing to high taxes, regulation and energy costs that make \u201cthe risk often not worth the reward\u201d for entrepreneurs. \u201cThere\u2019s a massive disincentive to work in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the fallout from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2026\/04\/03\/ex-uk-chancellor-backs-bitcoin-as-alternative-to-failing-systems\">Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng<\/a>&#8216;s 2022 mini-budget that characterized her premiership, she maintained the resulting market turmoil exposed hidden fragilities rather than caused them. \u201cThere was a tinderbox in the system that people didn\u2019t know about,\u201d she said, pointing to leveraged pension strategies.<\/p>\n<h3>CPAC UK<\/h3>\n<p>Now outside government, Truss is focused on building a political movement, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpac.org\/int\/greatbritain\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CPAC UK<\/a>, a three-day conference aimed at bringing together activists, entrepreneurs and voices from across the \u201csovereignty and liberty\u201d movement. \u201cWe need a movement of people who understand what the problem is,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Framing the stakes bluntly, she added: \u201cThere are two choices, either we\u2019re finished or we change it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> James Van Straten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2026\/04\/18\/former-uk-prime-minister-sees-economy-on-very-negative-trajectory-indicates-support-for-bitcoin\" class=\"button purchase\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Read More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former UK Prime Minister sees economy on &#8216;very negative trajectory,&#8217; indicates support for bitcoin Truss criticized central banking and defended her mini-budget, suggesting bitcoin and a CPAC UK conference could help push for economic reform.
